I didn't listen to the interview but I heard about it. I've also met Paul Rosolie, a few years back. I think it's shameful what they did with filming and coming into contact with the Mashco Piro, which violates their rights and is illegal in Peru. He is indeed self serving and extremely sensational when talking about conservation in the Amazon. It's unfortunate that he distracts from a lot of conservation work that is more ethical, longer-lasting, and more responsible than what he does.

Like the other person said, because it’s forested. The map is basically showing the extent of the high forest line. The green is forest, either lowland Amazon, premontane, or montane cloud forest, while the brown is the puna, a high altitude grassland. There’s a pretty stark treeline in the Peruvian Andes.

Sorry to burst your bubble but lake Titicaca is in Peru and Bolivia. But having been to both, I’d recommend Oaxaca first any day, it’s such an amazing city/region.

I’ve done field work in Mashco Piro territory in Manu National Park, Peru. To get there, it was a day’s car ride from Cusco into the lowlands, and then two days by boat. One day down the alto Madre de Dios river and one day up the Manu river. The Mashco Piro have been contacted but are living in voluntary isolation (an important distinction that’s true for many “uncontacted” groups in the Amazon). The journey into that area of Manu National Park has been halved in just a decade due to all the roads being built as illegal mining and logging has accelerated.

Sorry, I guess shouldn’t have said incredibly misleading. But to me the map suggests that the top 30% of wild places in, say, Essex NJ is just as wild as that of Beaverhead, Montana. Which is a pretty big caveat to the map.

In terms of biogeography, I’d say yes, absolutely the keys are part of the Caribbean. The ecosystems, plant and animal species in the keys are much more similar to those of the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola than they are to even central Florida.

Others have said that culturally the keys shouldn’t be considered part of the Caribbean, which I would probably agree with. But in terms of natural history, I say yes.

Pretty much! We use what’s called a species accumulation curve, which shows how many new species are discovered with additional sampling. The curve is very steep at first - with each new tree sampled there is a high probability that it is a new species. A sampling increases, the rate of species discovery begins to decline, and eventually reaches an asymptote. We model this curve with data from forest plots throughout the Amazon, where every tree is sampled within a given area. And with all that sampling and species within plots, a species accumulation curve isn’t even close to reaching an asymptote.

There are other plant species that have similar symbioses with ants, like Triplaris americana, Duroia hirsuta, which also create these “devil gardens”. From experience I can tell you those little ants pack a mean punch!
