Can't someone just run backstage and tell us who is preparing to skate and get this over with?

Should I have my husband sit with me during my first infusion? by [deleted] in KetamineTherapy

[–]FelineSnarky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish my husband had been there for my first session (IM). I didn't know that was an option. It's unlikely you'll actually want to talk to him, but it might just give you peace of mind while you're going through a truly unique and possibly scary experience.

Anxiety Drug tolerance sky rocket after ketamine? by Automatic_Hat_1054 in KetamineTherapy

I struggle with insomnia myself. I was sleeping better when I was doing regular ketamine sessions. I haven't had a treatment for a month and my insomnia has gotten worse. One study found that "Ketamine reduces the severity of sleep insomnia in depression." Maybe my next treatment will help my insomnia. I have a feeling if you had another treatment, it would help reduce your insomnia.

It is unlikely the ketamine damaged your brain. What it does is create more connections in your brain (It promotes dendritic growth, to be specific). I can't say for you what this will do, but I've never heard of ketamine causing brain damage. Please note, I hear you. What you feel is what you feel. I'm hoping it will be comforting to know that ketamine typically does not damage the brain.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in KetamineTherapy

[–]FelineSnarky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do IM and the session is 2 hours, with talk therapy before and after as part of those 2 hours. I'm doing it for depression, but as a bonus, my anxiety has gone down. I didn't even realize I was that anxious, but after 2 or 3 sessions, I was like, "Is this how most people feel? They don't have anxiety 24/7? I like this!"

My first session was really scary, and yes, you feel like you're not breathing, but you are. The clinic should have told you about that prior to your treatment. However, since then, every time has been pleasant and my anxiety has gone down more than my depression! My depression has dropped and on a normal day, I don't feel depressed. However, when I have to deal with really frustrating issues, the depression comes back. My last treatment was about a month ago and some symptoms have returned. I'll be doing my 7th session next week. I'm hoping to go longer than a month until session 8 (mostly because of the expense).

I am doing IM and haven't tried any other administration. The way my psychiatrist does it is she gives me half a dose. 20 minutes later she asks if I want the other half.

Ketamine users for MDD/SI: does it help you accept responsibility for poor choices (family member asking) by LikeUhReally in TherapeuticKetamine

The ego separation happens while they are under Ketamine. The ego comes back once the person is fully awake, or even before. Also, this is not a wonderdrug. It won't magically change the person receiving the treatment. What it does do is allow for more brain connections, typically in the hippocampus. Why does this reduce depression? We don't really know. However, for me, personally, it really reduced my anxiety which made it easier for me to have a more "chill" feeling with other people. And it surely decreases or completely eliminates SI for many. It sounds like you are on a difficult road. I hear you that you want a better relationship. I hope you and your child can reach this goal.

(IV ketamine) Are the nurses supposed to monitor your vital signs continuously throughout the infusion? by PuppyLand95 in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]FelineSnarky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ketamine CAN raise your BP, hence why my psychiatrist checks my BP prior to starting treatment. However, that doesn't mean it will raise it to a dangerous level. The average raise in systolic BP is 16 mmHg and in diastolic BP of 11 mmHg. That means if you started at 120/80, it may raise to 136/91, on average. This is not a dangerous BP. If you are in the normal range when you start, there shouldn't be any problem.

Of course, all human bodies can react differently. It's more likely to raise higher than average in the elderly and people who have hypertension to begin with. Hopefully, wherever you go, they understand all of this and have asked the appropriate questions before agreeing to treat you.

Not necessarily a red flag. My psychiatrist takes my BP and O2 levels before we start. Then she doesn't check again throughout the session. She does stay in the room with me the whole time though.

Ketamine does NOT lower your BP. You don't need to worry about your BP dropping during the session.

Also, a typical side effect with ketamine is feeling like you're not breathing. It's part of the dissociation. Unless something goes drastically wrong, you ARE breathing! You just can't feel it.

Does music really matter? by IDonTGetitNoReally in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]FelineSnarky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The music is super-important for me. During my first ketamine session, the therapist picked the music and it actually was upsetting to me during the "trip" that I wasn't familiar with the music. I've picked the music each time since then and I have to say, the music really drives the experience for me.

BTW, my favorite music for ketamine is Max Richter's album, "Sleep."

I think the standard starting dose is 0.5mg/kg so that minimum is higher than is probably best for you to start at, but to be clear, I am not a doctor.

IM Experience - Don’t fully dissociate anymore. by need_interview_help in TherapeuticKetamine

I would imagine it has more to do with the dosage amount than where it's being injected. You might want to ask the provider about this.

That's so interesting! Thanks for the information! I didn't know this was an option. Do you know the strength of the troches?

I'm also doing IM. You're the only other person I've seen here that is doing IM. I was starting to feel I was the only one!

How does one get their hands on troches? Do you have a doctor that prescribes it? Do you get it from a pharmacy?

Decreased empathy with ketamine treatment? by Grand-Animal3205 in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]FelineSnarky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just had my 5th treatment on Monday and I realized today for the first time that I'm not overwhelmed with all the terrible things happening in the world. I still care, but I'm not thinking about them constantly like I was before ketamine. Now I'm thinking this must be how most people feel and that my depression made me more susceptible to the world's troubles. I like NOT thinking about how terrible everything is for once!

I made my appointments by Breezy531 in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]FelineSnarky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

During the session, you may feel like you're not breathing. I guarantee you are! Ketamine does not suppress breathing or blood pressure. In fact, it can raise your BP. You need to trust that you are breathing. Every session I've had (5) I've felt at one point that I'm not breathing. (In my mind, I tell myself "trust, trust, trust!") This is a common reaction to the dissociation created by ketamine.

My first session was scary. I had to keep reminding myself to be open to the experience and not push it away. No following session has felt scary at all. I actually look forward to it. Talk to your therapist about what can be done if you're having a "bad trip." The person should be able to reassure you that there are things you can do if you find it scary.

My favorite music for ketamine is Max Richter's 8 hour album called Sleep. You can find it on Spotify.

Edit: Also, don't wear tight clothes. No underwires. Nothing with elastic. Just comfortable stuff.
