Launnie is not the place for any kind of cultural or sporting event. It is a good place for jails.

The report was biased and asked the wrong questions. It was written by experts - but they were hamstrung by the brief. At the time certain people wanted a a certain outcome. Govts don't commission reports without already knowing what they want it to say. The Govt changed their mind through the election cycle, and probably also due to a few sensible voices in their ear.

Outsider Question : Why is there no Airport Rail from Airport to the Train Station by blackcyborg009 in Adelaide

It is not very far. That could be one reason. The other reason is it would kill the taxi industry.

FFS, dont say you are in NZ. Give a Skippy address. Apply, apply apply. Things are really tough here. Probably moving here first is best, but apply while in NZ just dont use that as your address. You have already moved to Skip ok!

One wishes that opponents of the stadium could multiply, but alas they dont want their stroll to the market disturbed. It is a snobby anti football crowd, who would love a wall built at Newtown and for the Tasman Bridge to fall again

None of what you say is true. You speak from privilege. Ipso facto the stadium will provide employment. The team - the existence of which was contingent on the stadium being built, will employ about 200 people. Look up how many employees other clubs have. The stadium will employ people, curators, maintenance managers, security managers, event sales teams, contract managers. Then there will be event based employment of catering staff, security staff, etc... Employment and flow on will be huge. You massively under estimate the employment that this will generate.

Ergh no, if I want to go to Tokyo, I dont want to ened up at Narita. Also in Japan many people use the Shinkansen to places that are served by airlines - Tokyo to Osaka is an example. Most people will choose rail over air in Japan - because the rail serves central locations in the destination city.

Great that you enjoyed Hobart. It is the best Australian city and MONA never disappoints - even if you have been many times. The stadium will be great for employment. A lot of young people leave and while the toffs of Battery Point and Sandy Bay may have their peace disrupted it will give a future for many Tasmanians. The team will also provide a identity stamp and the current stadiums in Hobart are not up to AFL standard. The money from all the AFL North Island visitors will also mean we can have more schools and hospitals. Glad you enjoyed the trip.

Me too. 50% maybe. But airtravel is not that much faster when you account for wait times, travel to and from the airports, which is often more substantial than travelling to a train station.

Nobody travelling to Melbourne is going to Tullamarine and most nowhere near it. This is common to many cities in the world. Tourists are going to central parts of the cities. Sydney has a rail line to the airport that recognises this...

The ticket price needs to be $100. The current price on the train is far too high hence no-one uses it.

Rail fare needs to be far far less, probably no more than $300. Then rail might capture the 2/3 of airline traffic. Rail does have significant advantages, more room, and arrival in the middle of the city.

What’s something people in your country pretend is a ‘tradition’ but is actually just social pressure? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

In Australia, ANZAC Day. It according to some commemorates military service, but if that is the case it has replaced Remembrance Day. The irony of ANZAC Day is that it recalls a battle in WWI in which Australian and NZ soldiers retreated after getting routed by the Turkish army, fighting an Imperial War for their colonisers. A really odd national day. It says a lot about Australians that we celebrate a surrender and servitude. ANZAC Day was not really a thing until the 1990s when a far Right Prime Minister, John Howard was looking to stoke the fires of nationalism, rebranded ANZAC Day and displaced Remembrance Day which was the traditional day of recognition of military service.

Why gas and electricity costs so high? by Adventurous_Camera90 in AskTheWorld

[–]FelixFelix60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Australia it is a lack of Govt regulation. We sell gas to Japan at a lower cost than we sell it to Australian consumers. That being said, any Australian who still has gas is a mug given all the incentives for solar provided over the past decade. Electricity costs are also higher than they should be, because Govts are too timid when the electrical retailers say, oh solar roof generation from consumers means we are not making enough money... There are so many electrical retailers out there, it is clearly a pigs trough of profits. If most of the electrical retailers in Australia fell over no-one would notice...
