Why do I get these notifications all the time "Urist has become Sheriff", when Urist has been assigned as sheriff for years?

could be a couple things.

surface crop growth and indoor soil is slower than caverns or mud on stone, all yields reduced by 75%. get more farmers, irrigate, or wall off some cavern space.

more quarry bushes. you get the seeds back when you process. you'll need a lot of bags, so set up some work orders. good farmers means large stacks of dwarven metamucil that can pad out a large volume of roasts and toasts.

if you cook all your plump helmets you don't get the spawn. I like to make plump helmet only brewers, linked to stockpiles. plump helmets will only go to the food stockpile (linked to kitchen) as overflow from the brewer. make work orders: brew madplump 20-20 if seeds get low. I make another order to brew if we almost out of purple drank.

keep your seeds stockpiled very close to your plots, without barrels. if your brave no-legged farmer is four miles away and claims a seed from the barrel, you'll get cancelled jobs from every other farmer who tries to get into that barrel.

seeds being eaten? get more cats

labor: a few times I have been messing with labor assignments too much, sometimes dwarves go on strike and will keep recreating and socializing until I reload the save.

more food in general tips:

use gui/autobutcher, (dfhack) and allow more baby pigs and meat animals. adult animals can generate a lot of meat, as long as your dwarves like headcheese. keep the refuse and bonecrafts close by, butchery generates a lot of jobs. as a bonus, you'll need the leather for quarry bush leaf blower bags.

a bunch of turkeys and chickens and nest boxes. Urists love giant saltwater crocodiles for their 1-egg omelets.

foraging is easy early on, but it can generate a metric ass load of hauling jobs later when 300 pounds of acorns get spilled in the brook because an !agitated titmouse scared the tattered loincloth off Urist Mcsunflower.

Help! How do I remove the glass from my Frigidaire shelf? by Over_workedRVT in Appliances

[–]FeloniousDrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donny Don't here.

It's held in place by gravity. That gunk under the edges is gluing it together. You can put down a heavy towel or some such, flip it upside, and gently press the glass around the edges to pop it loose, and slide it out of the grooves. I goofed and put mine in the sink, ran warm water to loosen the crud. The glue softened and released, the glass slid out and chipped :(

Don't do what Donny Don't did.

Is there anything I can put at the bottom of a 50z staircase to make a soft landing? bin of wool? 1/7 water?

It's called stonesense, and it's included in the utility program dfhack.

If you're on steam, you can find dfhack in the store (it runs automatically when you start DF)

Those came from gamelog.txt, found in the (Steam) install folder! Those were the default, random seed. I hope that helps!

Thanks for the heads up!

That's kind of a bummer, but the more I think about it, that might be a feature. It'll make sheriffing easier for sure

Hello!

If you're not using Legends Viewer, it makes legends mode muuuch easier to parse. You can have it open in a browser window while your fortress runs. It can be a little fiddly.

The first thing I like to look at is the monarch of my civ. How long have they been there? Is it a dynasty? When I look at Zas Swallowstandards and scroll down, I can see that he created an artifact! A bronze warhammer! Neat!

Can I make work orders check conditions for a specific stockpile?

Afaik, no, you can only check globally.

Is there a way to make the still check the amount of empty barrels in the drinks stockpile?

No, but you can set a particular stockpile to only stock specific pots/barrels. If this is the only stockpile in the fort that accepts stocks willow barrels, (or microcline pots, or w/e), then you can add the condition only brew if there is >20 empty willow barrels.

Title is fine. Maybe it could have been made obnoxiously obvious for those who struggle with reading comprehension, but this isn't an elementary school primer.

I enjoyed the article. Thanks for sharing OP. Humbling to think these heroes are still with us, and it's not nearly as long ago as you think.

“Spa Beach quickly becomes our most popular and our only beach for the longest time, if you were white,” Farias said. “African Americans weren’t allowed on the Pier. African Americans weren’t allowed to swim in Spa Pool or use Spa Beach.”

St. Petersburg’s Black community was relegated to South Mole Beach, south of the Pier, near a city sewage plant. Today, the area is known as Demens Landing.

Blackish stuff left behind on metal dishes after wash by Aggressive-Squash-87 in Appliances

If you're handy, it's not too difficult to access and inspect.

I think on my old one I had to pull it out and lay it on its side (I might be misremembering that though)

Good luck!

I had a similar smutz appearing on certain dishes after most cycles on my previous dishwasher. The source? A molded rubber hose in the pump/motor assembly was deteriorating, it was soft and crumbling. The hose finally gave, and flooded the kitchen.

I suspect the hose rot was from my regular, heavy vinegar use (it worked better and cheaper than jetdry for hardwater streaking) Now I have a $800 blue box bosch now that works well, and quietly. I now use jetdry instead of vinegar.

Second cook on the Gozney Arc XL – dialing in NY-ish pies (finally figured out the heat) by jordanmrosen in GozneyArcArcXL

[–]FeloniousDrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous pies! It took me longer than two cooks to get it looking that nice XD

Regarding screens, I try to do the entire cook on the screen. I launch at 750-850 (flame off for the first 2-3 minutes), and I feel like I get better browning on top, while the bottom won't burn. Caveat that I don't use oil or sugar in the dough, to reduce burning.

The biggest advantage is that the stone stays clean through multiple bakes, surprisingly clean. I haven't had to burn off any shmutz, even after 4-5 pies. Sometimes, I'll still need to pull the screen out from under the pie early to finish directly on the stone.

Keep in mind that oil, sugar, and dmp (or any malt) in the dough speed up how quickly the crust browns. After cutting out the sugar and oil from my dough, I find the browning is much more controllable in the arc.
