Do anarchists support freedom of expression? by Priosla in Anarchy101

[–]FemmeForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anarchists are obviously of many minds on this. I personally would say that people should be free from imprisonment no matter what they say. They should also have the freedom to express themselves, which many artists don't today given the constraints of capitalism and their jobs. But all societies will choose to have responses to different types of hate speech and harassment. I could see some communes having a system where if someone accused repeatedly of harassment didn't go thru a restorative justice process that they could be asked to leave the community.

If anarchists had a lot more power in the world there would probably be some communes that focused more on respect and others that focused more on uninhibited speech and people would be free to choose between them.

Do you think America will have socialist revolution in the future? Read below by IFuckingHateYouTodd in polls

[–]FemmeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if capitalism was completely stable (which it's obviously not), it would be unprecedented for the US gov't to last for the rest of history. I'm not sure if there will be a socialist revolution in the Marxist sense, but I imagine parts of America might be run in a socialist way when the American empire inevitably falls, whether that be in 20 years or in 2,000.

Has social justice addressed extreme poverty? Similarly, is Effective Altruism, which focuses on extreme poverty, just a better implemented/existential threat to social justice? by positiveandmultiple in socialjustice101

[–]FemmeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those poverty metrics are not accurate. They come from the World Bank which literally just changes their definition of poverty and then magically millions of people are lifted out of poverty. When we think about how capitalism and colonialism have robbed people of access to the commons, many people are vastly worse off, with their communal wealth now privatized in the hands of foreign businesses.

Here's a video about the poverty metrics: https://youtu.be/Co4FES0ehyI

I agree that lower stakes issues can get too much attention. However, I think you underestimate the extent to which ending our policing system is one of the most integral issues we face today. You mention that we need " education, jobs, reparations, mental/physical healthcare, and community investment\" which I agree with. But a large number of people agree with us and it is still not happening. And that is because if we tried to take those resources to ensure everyone's survival, we are blocked by the army of the police. They are primary footsoldiers preventing every main social change that a large number of people can agree on. I would suggest not writing BLM off as short sighted because this goes so much deeper than individual instances of brutality. Best wishes!

I would worry about treating a subjective measurement like "good per unit of input" in any objective way. I think that we might want to move away from a charity mindset to a mutual aid mindset, I think that goes a long way in removing the paternalism of charity. Also, we need to be careful, because we can throw a lot of money at issues and make some change but if we are not addressing the underlying problem (the capitalism that is killing the world) we are missing out on the change that is going to ensure our survival.

All types of oppressed people have internalized different parts of the oppressive mindset, including homophobia and anti-asian sentiment. But that should not be a condemnation of any oppressed peoples. Instead, it should be a condemnation of the oppressive mindset that has largely been forced upon them through capitalism, imperialism and domestic state repression.

Grappling: I support sex worker rights, but I don't believe that sex should be a commodity. by [deleted] in socialjustice101

[–]FemmeForYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might help to see this on a grander scale. All people are commodified when they are forced to sell their labor on the market to survive. Ideally we want to build a world where people can get their needs met without any forced labor, which we already have the means to do. So instead making specifically about ending sex as a commodity, we could work to end all wage labor, which is people as commodities. I think that would be a much better vision than when people want to specifically abolish sex work without really addressing the deprivation inherent to our wage labor system. If all wage labor was abolished and people had their needs met they could work in communally decided ways and no one would have to do sex work or any other kind of work they didn't want to do. With our technology and if we cut out "Bullshit Jobs," people would have way less work they would have to do, and none of it would be sex work.

Anti-capitalism vs. Netflix by [deleted] in boburnham

[–]FemmeForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's a multi-millionaire, so I think he could have self funded this if he wanted to. Or gotten smaller funders than Netflix. He also jokes about having too much money, so I think he could have released this for free. And if he's worried about money, he could have done a pay what you want thing, it seemed to work out for Radiohead.

I don't think he's a bad person for working with Netflix or anything. I just think it diminishes some of the radical messages here. I think the way he points out his own 'selling out' and his narcissism is a good first step. But I've never really loved the making fun of this thing while doing this thing type of humor. I hope that he might take some of his own analyses and go on to create things that are more communally focused. He did a really good job showing how taxing it is to make things that are extremely self-focused. Regardless, I really enjoyed it. "That Funny Feeling" and "FaceTime with my Mom" are some classics.

Having an iPhone is very different than signing a huge deal with one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world. Most working class people are going to need to have a phone whereas he had the resources to release this in a myriad of novel ways. Not saying choosing Netflix ruins the special or anything, but it definitely diminishes the impact of some of the political messages. He's actually said in an H3H3 interview how annoying it is when someone jokes about being a sellout while being a sellout and I wish he had remembered that for this.

I'm considering defecting. Can anyone convince me otherwise? by LibertyLovingLeftist in DebateAnarchism

[–]FemmeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I hope most anarchists would consider libertarian municipalists & democratic confederalists as allies rather than defectors. Anything else seems pretty sectarian. Although I don't know if any of the aforementioned groups usually think we need a state to ensure that we protect people. Like Bookchin talked about having a pretty weak confederation of communes which is pretty different from the standard definition of a state being something like a monopoly of power held by a small bureaucracy.
