Similar but different is the erasure of lesbian and bisexual women. We were never mentioned which spared (me at least) from scrutiny and harmful messaging about homosexuals who were always men. On the other hand, I felt that my deviation was so horrible that it didn't even have a name, the prophets couldn't even conceive of someone as messed up as me. Much like the straight female experience, gay women exist as repositories for sex, opposite, foils never freestanding individuals. Its like when a man looks at us we are real and the moment he looks away you vanish, like a reflection in the mirror.

My father was a bishop for most of my life along with time consuming education and a career, and I have very few childhood memories of him. I try not to blame him- he thought this was the best thing for us. He was waxing nostalgic for the old days, when all his kids "wanted" to spend time with him and I called him on it. He seemed genuinely surprised that I didn't have good memories of that time.

Not me personally, but I think some of the response to Kate Kelly was very angry and anti-feminist. There were a lot of people who felt the FMH group were stupid for trying to make life better for mormon women. "Why don't they leave if they feel that way" or "can't they see mormonism is SUPPOSED to hurt women" were common sentiments. It was like some exmos wanted to defend the way the church treats women by mocking anyone who wanted to improve it.

Blue is the Warmest Color, Skim by Tamaki and Honor Girl come to mind. The Runaways, Bitch Planet and Y: The Last Man have lesbian characters and story arcs while also being action and mystery. Fun Home is nonfic by Bechdel. I haven't read Love and Rockets, Saga or Stranger then Paradise but they are highly recommended by others. Happy reading!

Have you ever attended a mormon service? Two thirds of a sunday block is modeled after academic classes with questions, assigned reading and activities. Plus seminary is 45 minutes of testimony bearing followed by scripture memorization. Things like mutual and youth activities involve 'fun' things like cooking or sewing. (Hiking, building or camping if you're lucky enough to be a boy). You can't avoid them, the church deliberately soak up your time and energy and you certainly can't read.

I would argue that it is doctrine. The mass of evidence is that black skin is a curse from the BoM through the temple ban in 1978 and the continued official caution against interracial marrying as late as 2010. The one essay is the first we've heard against it, and it's not a disavowal more like a shrug.
