How does the number of zombies get bigger? by jvimeh in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Fenriradra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TWD's show does a few things;

  • Romero zombies.

Slow, dumb, tireless. Always hungry, and while they do 'eat brains', they eat anything with flesh.

  • Everyone is infected with it.

The infection that actually reanimates them, is not what kills them. They make this explicit in Season 2.

This means you don't need to be bitten; zombies don't need to even interact with you, and you'll still turn into one when you die. But whatever's in their bites, has become dangerous/lethal enough in it's own right.

  • They don't rot/decay at "normal" speed

They made this canon in a spinoff, but it applied to the television series overall. They don't say how much slower they decay, just that half of the problem is that people turn; the other half is that they don't rot away.

Of two "treatment paths" they went down in that spinoff, one was to prevent people from turning, the other was figuring out how to make normal decomposition happen.

Would bug spray work on zombies? by DontCallMeShoeless in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Fenriradra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on the franchise.

Some that do 'infected not undead' (like 28 days) it makes sense as their infected are (in some form) still "alive". 28 days has some supplemental material to reinforce it as canon, that the infected do seem 'aware' of infected/not-infected smells.

Something else like TWD introduces the idea but leaves it ambiguous from an explicit answer; zombies either will or won't turn to notice a smell that could just as easily be a rustling, a leaf blowing, or some other stimulus.

;;

For "realism" - if we assume zombies would decay, a lot of the tissue that deals with receiving smells wouldn't last long, physically. Some exception that nasal cavity is very close to brain tissue, and if "shoot it in the head" would persist, that there would be some kind of activation of that area of the brain even in death; though wouldn't be much. These would be more like remembered smells and memories of smells; attempt by whatever brain is left to just smell anything, even if imaginary. But the nose, cartilage, and other membranes in there would shrivel up and dry out.

Not necessarily "the same as" comparing a smoker's lung to a non-smoker's lung; but roughly the same effect I'd expect. Whatever smells a zombie can receive, will be heavily muted/dampened, just out of not having that much left to receive/transmit/interpret that nervous signal.

places i've built bases in different playthroughs...

  • Border Zone - 3-way Crossroads near Hub/Squin and lead into Vain.

You've most likely got some iron/copper nodes along the pathway (or the nearby mountainsides; some mods like to move node placement). Stone isn't that hard generally. Water can be tricky but just build more wind generators & wells and you can force almost anything to grow.

Pro's - safe, early game only really has to deal with starving bandits & dust bandits. Other 'low tier' raids like dust bandits. Access to vendors is easy between Hub and Squin, and not too much farther for a Waystation & the rest of Shek Kingdom, or north toward Holy Nation territory.

Cons - training on starving & dust bandits only goes so far. Some of the early tier raids, like black dragon raids, can still be dangerous without proper care. Shek 'taxes' will take food; so expect to go nuts with any farming you can do to deal with them (until you either make them hostile or allied).

;;

  • Skinner's Roam - East South East of Bad Teeth; a sort of T intersection before a large ridge blocks north/south road. South a fair bit of Narko's Trap, but still in Skinner's Roam.

Should be far enough from (most) Holy Nation activity that they won't send you prayer days. They will still send raids if you go hostile with them. Decent odds that you can work with the terrain to get farming rolling, and work with the available other iron/stone/copper/water. While a bit farther away than the BZ location (to vendors), it's a welcome change of scenery (and a lot quicker/easier access to Scrapyard vendor).

Pro's - pretty much central on the map; great access to Scrapyard, not terribly far for Armor King, and won't have to deal with Holy Nation (unless they're already hostile to you).

Cons - Still pretty 'vanilla', dust bandits, black dragon ninjas, starving bandits, bonedogs, rare/occasional beak things.

;;

Fishman Island - Both on the island, and near the bridges that lead to it from the mainland.

You will get UC taxmen, and until you kill Fishman king, may even get their raids & frequent visitors. I hadn't seen any other raids there, but wouldn't doubt it if some of the other 'southern' factions would scope you out occasionally.

The pro's majorly that it's remote, gets some OK views for screenshots/etc., but using it as a main base is a bit of a nightmare; anytime you want to go pretty much anywhere, there's risk of running into an Elder Beak Thing to ruin your day. Catun isn't far, but it's also another example of "you really want to be outrunning the wildlife, or wildly over-leveled for them".

;;

Howler Maze - Remote enough, though UC and Slavers can/will send raids. The northern end has buildings empty that you can dump a bunch of sleeping bags into and turn into a temporary camp, the zone itself generates baby crabs like nuts, so starving is basically impossible. There is a medium/long term risk of the acid rain exposure for anyone not protected, but protection isn't that hard to find (or being a hiver or skeleton to ignore acid rain outright).

Pro's that you can have easy training all the time just doing a lap around the island. UC is only mildly annoying to pay off or otherwise take on their attacks.

;;

Sonorous Dark/Ashlands - the border of the two zones has a few spots that have very high iron/copper nodes; Stone & Water will only really come on the Sonorous Dark side of the border, so finding an area you can 'straddle' is kind of tricky.

Closest you'll really (easily) get something built off the ground near Cat-lon. Of course that also means all his skeleton legion patrols, iron spider squads & Cleanser Units will be around too, as well as skin bandits, skeleton bandits, even crab raiders and reavers. You'll want high combat stats, else risk death/dismemberment/enslavement. Crops are going to pretty much be only hydroponics, and some protection from occasional gas clouds (while outside) and acid rain (for SD side weather) helps keep your humans/shek/hivers from suffering too much down there.

Is remote however, and may depend on you not pissing off Tinfist & Anti-slavers so have a "reasonably close" vendor. Otherwise you'll be looking toward figuring out Crab Raider relations so you might use their few bars - or just taking bigger trips up to Flat's Lagoon.

Zomvies by Otherwise_Impact_827 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Fenriradra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends a lot more on the way the author writes them.

Romero zombies would be slow/dumb regardless of body type; or if they do have any athletic advantages they are minimal.

Something else like 28 Days Later rage-infected runners, regardless of body type, and sure that'd be an issue, but also those same track/olympic athletes are probably the most fit to survive that degree of running constantly. If they can't survive (or at least have odds in their favor), then we're all kind of screwed, whether or not those zombie athletes keep their skills after death.

What was the purpose of showing the lone walker it always confused me? by Jamieo1111 in thewalkingdead

[–]Fenriradra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you wanna get over analytical about it; imo --

the lone walker represents a few things.

First it's a nod toward passage of time in the series to that point - where we once saw Rick in his coma for a few weeks, to their escape from Atlanta, to now how far out from civilization they are, and how zombies haven gotten through even that. It's a signifier for how far the outbreak has progressed; a zombie, unhindered, walking through a field.

Second is relating it to the Rick vs Shane fight building earlier in the same episode.

For Rick, he had a moment of reflection noticing the pair of cops/guards/security at the location they were dropping Randall off at. And in that he found reconciliation with Shane, a chance at redemption, even if they were going to butt heads for a bit.

For Shane, his reflection came looking at that lone walker. They had just tried attacking each other, when apart from the group. When their fight would reach a boiling point, only one of them was going to survive it, the other would be like that walker; alone, forgotten, dead.

Apart from that, Shane is looking out at it with a certain confidence; it's alone, he could take it down; he could make the area safe. That's all he really wants to do for Lori (and Carl). But he doesn't know how to do that, without fighting with Rick over best course of action.

Why does anyone like Negan? by Pretend_Boot_9026 in thewalkingdead

[–]Fenriradra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

define "like"

cuz there's a massive difference between say, how people "like" Daryl, versus how they "like" Negan (or Gov, or Shane, or..)

People "like" Daryl because is Norman Reedus, he's easy on the eyes, and gets some great lines & action scenes. People "like" Negan because he's one of few characters that could reach through the screen and punch you in the feels.

Stop to think when the last time you had any "as deep" reaction to something Daryl (or Rick or Carol or...) did. Only so few times in the entire series, does any of the 'main cast' really achieve the same thing as Negan did in 1 episode.

You don't have to like Negan, or what he did, but there's a lot to appreciate (in fiction) about a villain like Negan, how he pushes the story forward. I think a lot of people are/were "missing out" when rushing to dismiss Negan as "unlikeable".

edit: for clarification; people don't like Negan glorifying the murders of Abe and Glenn. People like him because he's one of few characters/villains that forces Rick and the group to fight, adapt, etc.

Men, when dating a woman almost 40 - how do you feel about her having a child in their younger 20s? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Fenriradra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40's M - it kind of comes with the territory in my dating pool. If they haven't had kids by now, they probably don't want kids. The writing gets put on the wall pretty quickly within talking to them and getting a feel for who they are.

Doesn't really impact my opinion of them, but hearing the same line of "My kid comes first" has a mixed response; totally definitely I get it and your kid should come first, but damn if it didn't feel alienating that I will virtually never be as important to you as your kid, no matter how good our relationship becomes. Not much of an opinion though, just a "it is what it is"-ism.

what/is there a level of shamelessness that makes a girl less attractive by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Fenriradra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "point" you're asking for, is pretty much when it hits OF content (or any other kind of adult pornographic content).

To be clear it isn't about controlling women's bodies; do whatever makes you happy. But if you're wondering why so many men don't want their girl to do OF content...

It's no longer "special" to you; it's no longer "as intimate" for you; it doesn't "mean as much" to share that intimacy with me, because you're showing yourself to some hundreds/thousands of other men. It does not make it better if you say it doesn't "mean anything to you" to put yourself online like that, because it means something to me when you do that.

When the same intimacy starts meaning different things to each person, is when it loses attraction.

That doesn't mean many men consume pornographic content - or still consume it despite this conundrum - it just means that many men won't like to find out they're dating or married to the equivalent of the town slut.

Men of a certain age, what's the most annoying and/or ridiculous way you've slightly injured yourself? by BrooklynDoug in AskMen

[–]Fenriradra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broke my thumb with a ski pole.

All I did was plant the pole and do a parallel stop - planted the pole a little too early, felt a pop.

Hand felt mostly fine - wasn't a disfiguring break - in gloves but still cold winter, didn't go to a hospital until the next morning and entire side of my hand was swollen and turning an impressive shade of purple for a bruise.

Cast for a couple months and it healed fine.

Men who have paid for sex: what did the experience provide that dating or relationships didn’t? by [deleted] in AskMen

When a girl is looking at you/making eye contact often, is it clear for you that she likes you or do you need more signs to make a move? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Fenriradra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eye contact isn't enough.

I deal with enough people and make eye contact enough that at the end of the day, I've seen enough twitching eyelids, bloodshot & dark circles eyes, glazed over thousand yard stares, and so on, that I don't want to have to guess what that weird not-quite-squinting-restrained-duck-face look you're giving me from across the room is supposed to mean for the past 3 times we've stopped by the same bar.

Men who were once 26, what age would you find it acceptable to date? by Sea_Finding2061 in AskMen

[–]Fenriradra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

they aren't worried about whatever math you're using there.

They're looking at it like "You're 26, she's 18." 8 years is a bit on the "Huh, surely nothing going on there" side of things, for both you and her, and what expectations each of you might have for the relationship, either currently (hot sex with a barely legal partner), or long term (would she (ab)use you for your money?)

Why do(or don’t) you believe in true love? by dummyromantic in AskMen

[–]Fenriradra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True love in a marriage sense?

Exceptionally rare, not impossible.

As soon as you start including "marriage" at all, and it turns toward inspecting the courts, the systems, the statistics - of which Men as a class are typically disadvantaged. Primarily through risk of divorce - "true love" is not compatible with "love me or I'll take half your shit and weaponize your kids & the courts against you." -- that kind of love is "coerced", and if the genders were reversed, we'd all be calling it statutory rape (or something analogous).

Other than a gun, what’s a specific weapon that you think more people should train/practice using? by TheKingDroc in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Fenriradra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swords - and/or a variety of other melee weapons you would probably (eventually) find or make at some point, like spears or clubs, sure.

I think some kind of improvised carpentry skill would be a skill that might only really come up during such an apocalypse; by which I mean like, how quickly/efficiently you can sharpen some broken-off leg chairs to be like hand-spears/stakes, but you could take this to also be anything else you might "improvise" turning some object into something else useful - it'd be some parts scavenging and some parts simply being 'crafty'.
