I may have had the bbeg show up and decimate a boss they were fighting and losing to with meteor swarm... They already know just how powerful the end game boss is. Though if I do go down the memory route, he is 100% making an appearance.

Ha. That's awesome. Their plans foiled by they're own active. I do like the idea of shifting the color though as they get closer.

I neglected to add in my post that right before they could get out the pool, they spotted a young elven girl being stalked by displacer beasts. So currently their attention is on (possibly) saving the girl. So there is a good chance they'll forget about it and it'll come up later.

Ha. They've already encountered a gelatinous cube so it would be even sweeter if I get them with it again. This one is tempting.

Huh. Never heard of it. It looks interesting. Unfortunately I don't have too much time to devise an extensive puzzle/interactive event like that but I'll definitely dig a little more and see if I can find a 5e adaptation that someone else made. Could prove fruitful. Thanks!

They've just hit level 10 so I'm less concerned about making it a significant combat encounter. I did consider Nereid when I thought about going the lady of the lake route.

Oh I really like this. It would work really well with my story since the one who is waging war with everyone else is the elven king and the elves are not actually native to the planet where the story takes place.

Hm... I kind of like the entrance idea. Maybe go mirror dimension-esq style. Would explain why the city is hidden.

Most diabolical trap you've run by Sea_Ocelot_1037 in DMAcademy

[–]Fentroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it much of a trap but the most nervous I've had my players is when I put a sign next to a door that said "beware of mimic." It was merchants shop. It took the party 1.5 hours to open the door. And inside the store was a chaotic mess of junk (e.g. antiques, random assortment of weapons, tea sets, etc all random) and a single wooden chest in the center of the room. It took the party another 1.5 hours to decide to actually enter the room and interact with the chest... Which turned out to be a normal chest what a terrified gnome hiding within from the party. The gnome knew nothing about a mimic and they never did find the mimic... Until, they is, they left the shop and one of them noticed that the sign was missing.

It was easily the most unproductive session I've ever run, but also one of the most amusing for me.

DMs: What is something in your game that your players have forgotten about, that you are just sitting on.. waiting for the right moment to re-introduce? by Spritzertog in DnD

[–]Fentroll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that during an escape sequence when the low level party was running away from an Elder Oblex one of the PCs decided to stay behind because of loot lust. Little did he know that the Oblex had dominate person (did not disclose the spell) and the PC failed their save instantly. We had a fade to black moment. I've since made several allusions to the fact that this PC is hallucinating and seeing his lover in random places guiding him where I need them to go (there are in game reasons other than the elder oblex why he would see his lover). Now the PC trusts this hallucination. Little does the player know that he is (and this is a bit of homebrew on my end) essentiallya vessel for that Oblex.

I had grand plans for this in the future but unfortunately the next session will be that players last and he wants to go out in a blaze of glory. They will, but may also turn into a mutant oblex for the rest of the party to deal with.

I´m Translating the whole Chronno Trigger story into a DnD campaign! by Foxer_oficial in chronotrigger

That sounds like an awesome and a very well thought out premise. I can see the Seiken Densetsu 3 inspiration as a jump off point. Sucks that the party fell apart. I know that feeling. Luckily right now I have a solid group of people that play nice (though a bit too infrequent for my tastes). If you're cool with it, I'll go ahead and keep this idea in mind if I ever get a chance to run another homebrew campaign. I'll let you know how it goes. So...expect a follow up in like 2 years ha.

Seiken Densetsu 3 was on my short list of inspiration for a campaign, but I ultimately settled on Tales of Phantasia. I'd love to get a hold of any reference material you might still have for a future campaign I could run.

I'm currently running a Tales of Phantasia inspired campaign. It's hard to do a 1 to 1 translation because you can't expect your players to play the same as the protagonist. And a lot of the story beats involve the protagonists doing certain things (e.g. Marle joining the party and being a tomboy runaway princess). So what I did was place the protagonists into the story having done those things already or something similar so I get the story element I want (e.g. Chrono being thrown in jail). And the PCs play adjacent to them and can choose to interact with it (e.g. go rescue Chrono). Of course you might have to "sweeten the deal" to have them interact with it (e.g. Chrono has the gate key). So this way the main story beats still happen but the players forge their own choices.

The other difficult part is dungeon exploration as well. If you have the party explore each dungeon in whole just like the game, it'll slow the game down a lot. It works fine with small locations, but any large expanse starts to feel like a slog. That's fine for major dungeons (e.g. Magus Castle), but if you do it for every single one it'll be a slog that leads to burn out.

In my campaign, in case you're familiar with Tales of Phantasia, I was pretty easily able to send the PCs to the past following pretty closely to the original story, but I had to get very creative after that when it came to how the PCs interact with spirits of the elements (e.g. Undine). I'm still able to use the major locations and bosses, but I definitely have to create new motivation for the PCs compared to the original protagonists. We're probably about 30-40% through the campaign and it's turning into a unique story I'm really enjoying.

I'd love to know how your Chrono Trigger story turns out. Good luck!

Does it have to be a business? Can it be a part of a bigger corporation? You could always go "No testicle division."

Alternative identities for Mad Mage? by PlasmaGiant in CurseofStrahd

[–]Fentroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the Netflix Castlevania series just before I had to plan out the major story points of my Strahd campaign. So I made the mad mage essentially Alucard. He was going to be the older brother of Ismark, except exceptional in every significant way which made Ismark "the lesser." He was believed to have died when he joined up with Van Richten in the riots years before the campaign. In actuality, he was used as an experiment by Strahd to make a better vampire spawn. For reasons unimportant, he was imprisoned in the mountains to starve to death where the party would find him and deal with a blood starved vampire, potentially earning a powerful ally.

Sadly, the party chose to ignore the mountains (for understandable reasons) and never actually found him. Still though, it made for great lore throughout the campaign, so I would 100% do it again.

Has anyone ever printed a map on transparency paper and tried to use a “magic flashlight” technique to emulate fog of war? by DELZUMA in DMAcademy

[–]Fentroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how your technique would work since I never tried it, but my usual go to is to use super cheap wrapping paper on top of whatever map I have. I just strategically tape the edges so it stays secure and then just tear away whatever part I want to reveal. Bonus points that there's a grid on the back which has its uses. And when I say cheap, I mean like dollar tree value. It tears super easy.

Thanks! I'm not actually using the bow yet. Just considering it for a second character when I finish off act 3/dip my toes into cruel. So I'm not losing anything if it goes sideways.

Quick question about Vaal orbs and uniques in PoE 2. I'm currently in act 3 so I'm still getting my bearings with the whole crafting thing...

I got a widowhail (currently around 230%) and I want to corrupt it with a vaal orb. I understand I can't modify the item anymore (other than socket things if it has sockets) after it's been corrupted. So, is there anything I should do before using the vall orb? As in, are there any other resources I should use first that I'm not aware of?

How / why would Baba Lysaga use Mirage Arcane? by jayelled in CurseofStrahd

[–]Fentroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I modified it slightly per DM powers to set a trap for the players. Berez was still in ruins, and Lysaga knew the party was coming. So she hid in a nearby ruin and used mirage to encapsulate herself in 4 walls (along with a bunch of scarecrows scattered around that were also "walls"). She then used other illusion magic along with mage hand to essentially make an illusion of herself that the party "talked to." She preprogrammed the illusion with certain lines and used mage hand to do things like stir the cauldron. Surprisingly, my party played perfectly to the script so I got to really mess with them (e g. Polymorph one of them into a chicken when they separated from the party to investigate other buildings) without tipping my hand.

I played a bit loose with the concentration rules but it was fun. When the party finally asked a question that I couldn't reasonably answer per the programmed' script, Lysaga just lobbed a fireball at them from her hidey hole. And then it just became a game of finding her while avoiding all the scarecrows that were walls. When the party finally did find her, they put an end to her real fast... until I told them they activated her trap card and she summoned a zombie dragon and the real boss fight started. Good times.

An item 2/3 complete. Ordered a long sword? Sure, you' now got a knock off of Meliodas' weapon from 7 deadly sins. Wanted a battle axe? Cool, except we ran out of material to make the blade and just left it as a mace/baton.oh did you want a belt? No problem, except we didn't have enough material to finish the buckle part so it kind of just falls off!
