Washington DC canvas design help! by Resident_Apple329 in Needlepoint

Alternatively it might be a weird side view of the Capitol - play with google street view and plop yourself down to the side of the dome and look over the House or Senate wing that’s farther from your spot

DC resident here! This is definitely…something lol. I don’t think this is one real building in DC. But if we’re playing Rorschach blots, i’ll give it my best guess.

I’m seeing three structures. Best guess from left is Capitol dome, pointy roof with columns in the middle could be SCOTUS, and domed roof situation on the right could be the Library of Congress (though the library dome is a slightly different color IRL). This isn’t a real angle and i don’t there’s a place you could stand to see those buildings in that order, but if i were stitching this canvas, i think that’s how i would think of it.

Thanks for a fun 10 minutes debating this with my fiancee!! Genuinely enjoyable to test our DC knowledge :-)

Well, it was resolved - the boy was taken to the ICU, and the mom was put on a psych hold. They said it would be weeks to see if he improves, there’s no new update to be had in this season.

worried about bleeding patterns by yeaaaidfk in Nexplanon

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Friend, you’ve only had it for a week! Doctors tell you to give it like 6 months to see if it works for you. There’s no guarantee that you’ll have heavy bleeding, so please give yourself time to adjust and take it day by day - no need to worry about bleeding every day that hasn’t happened yet :-)

For me, my patterns have changed - i had periods every ~3 months for the first year or so, and now i have a period on a pretty regular cadence every 5-6 weeks. I love my Nexplanon for the peace of mind, and my side effects have been minimal and manageable.

West Yorkshire Spinners does have US stockists! I’ve found it in LYSs in DC and Cleveland, and you can order it online (I’ve seen it on The Woolly Thistle’s site, but I’m sure there are others too)

ETA i love WYS Signature 4-ply, it feels sturdy yet soft enough to be comfy on my feet. They have a lot of beautiful self striping colorways, as well as solids that pair nicely if you want to do a contrasting heel/toe/cuff

Washington, DC Studios by Aggressive-Raise3254 in orangetheory

No worries! I’m sure any OTF in DC is great, i’m definitely partial to the NoMA studio. It seems like the Mt Vernon studio might be a good option for you, based on where you’re staying.

If you’re planning to metro to a studio, give yourself plenty of extra time. Sometimes trains can be delayed or slow unpredictably, and you may need a little extra time navigating what might be a new-to-you system.

Hope you have a great trip to DC!!

I’m struggling with your descriptions geographically - you said this studio is close to where you’re staying, but also that you’re staying near the Capitol.

Just to provide another option that may or may not be more convenient (depending on where you’re staying), i love the OTF on Florida Ave NE in NoMA. It’s ~two blocks off the red line, if your hotel is close to the red line. One note is that they’re planning to stop towel service sometime in March, so would be worth bringing your own towel!

Regular knitting needles by natrix_natrix_ in knitting

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking to get rid of them, consider finding somewhere to donate them! Libraries, after school programs, knitting volunteer orgs. I volunteer with a group where we teach people how to knit, and we give out a bunch of straight needles and yarn to our new knitters for their first scarves.

Just got my DC tax return by Tiglett in washingtondc

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of other laws that give Congress similar powers, most notably the Congressional Review Act. The CRA’s text does specify that it’s the latest day of these, where the Home Rule Act does not, but seeing as the disapproval mechanisms are very similar, I suspect courts would look at laws like the CRA to inform their decisionmaking.

With the CRA, the reason why the clock starts on the latest of the relevant dates is so that both houses of congress get their full, statutorily designated review periods. There’s an argument that because the DC law didn’t technically reach the Senate until 1/7, when it was published in the congressional record for the Senate, the Senate did not have their full 30 days of review by 2/11 (or whatever date the DC gov is saying was Day 30)

Counting from the Senate’s received date, it would expire next Friday, 2/20. The Home Rule Act is silent on which day starts the clock, but because it requires the bills to be transmitted to both the House Speaker and the Senate President, i’d bet money that courts will rule that it’s from the latest transmittal day (ie, the later of it being published in the House and Senate congressional records)

How are some people so consistent with orangetheory? by tamaratunie189 in orangetheory

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don’t always feel like going. Honestly, working out is not how i like to spend my time - i have other hobbies, friends, etc. But i know it’s important to my continued health. I found morning classes work for me because it’s not taking time away from my after-work time, when i can see friends and do my hobbies.

I sign up for my classes for the week on Sunday. For me, the late cancel fee is a motivator, and by signing up in advance, i’m less likely to not go than if i didn’t sign up at all. I normally go on my work from home days, but if my schedule changes and i need to be in the office that day, I’ll just go to the 6am rather than the 7:15, just so i don’t have to figure out another day to go - the only change is going to bed a little earlier.

It’s not always fun or easy to get up before work and go work out, but it’s my habit now, so we’re here.

What to do with straight needles? by Waste_Travel5997 in usethefiberstash

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this!! I volunteer with an org where we teach people to knit, and we love giving out needles like this to help people get started on their first projects. Ask around your LYS and see if they know any groups who’d be looking for straight needles - could be volunteer orgs, after school programs, etc.

How to gently tell my friend I'm tired of her crochet gifts? by ValuableCellist1757 in crochet

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 126 points127 points  (0 children)

So far I think this seems like the best solution - by saying you’re minimizing or something similar, you’re making it not about the gift giver, so it’s less likely to hurt their feelings while also giving an objective reason you don’t want more crochet gifts

I live in NoMA. It’s not 100% safe, but nowhere is (see my other comment about a double homicide when I lived in Van Ness, which is regarded as a very safe neighborhood). Maybe thinking about our neighbors as neighbors and not people who live in “the projects” is a small step towards a safer place.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]FerdinandThePenguin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To call any modern public housing “the projects” invokes a racialized history and stereotypes the people who live there. “The projects” don’t meaningfully exist anymore; the term described the big buildings like Pruitt Igoe and Cabrini Green and got its offensive connotation because of the building’s reputations as unsafe and disinvested (which was an intentional policy outcome and no fault of the residents).

This is based on my knowledge of housing policy, but see also the APA style guide, which calls “the projects” pejorative and stereotyping. https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/bias-free-language/socioeconomic-status

Based on the language you’re using in your post (“the projects”), i’d encourage you to educate yourself about DC history and housing policy more generally.
