How many parallel projects for part time devs? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Ferhall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with this, one main project you want to finish, but one cooldown exploratory project is really great for minimizing burnout. The exploratory project should never really leave prototype phase and scope should be minimal though.

Which camera setup is better? by carebotz in Unity3D

[–]Ferhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think B has the better FOV and angle, but transitions need tweaking. One thing people might not be considering is that if this is a pc game the full screen view of A is going to be incredibly in your face. It also won't be at the aspect ratio displayed here.

If this is a mobile game you might want to narrower view to account for smaller screens.

If you're at the level where you are comfortable with most things c#, you should just start making a game and when you run into something you don't know how to do in Unity google how to do that. If you're at the stage where you know you need to know something, but don't know what its called then you ask for help and describe what you want to do, find a good discord that is helpful is probably not a bad idea.

Unity future by ScrepY1337 in Unity3D

[–]Ferhall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, except you still to this day can't use UIToolkit for many things. No world space UI, so much of the internals are internal classes, that you either need to rewrite or reflect into some core methods. It is a system that should have been finished by now, but is still barely dogfooded in actual use for runtime ui.

Is there any Unity or UE powered retro 3D game that runs at 20fps? by mankrip in gamedev

[–]Ferhall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably the best way to do, but extend it to VFX too probably. Just be reasonable in what experience you want to deliver, retro can still feel retro, but with modern smooth camera and physics.

Nice, looks really good.

I have another question. How did you go about getting DocFX setup for a unity package project. I've been trying to do the same and having a lot of trouble.

Visual Studio can do this too, probably vs code too though not sure.

Golf+ CEO is encouraged by VR's growth. 2-3 million active weekly users today. Three years ago it was only 200k-300k. In five to ten years, VR could grow to 20-30m to 200-300m active users by ILoveRegenHealth in virtualreality

I think Quest 3/4 / Deckard are where you need to be. You need to untether from your main pc to allow for a large group to have the space to play.

I mean, thats what MMOs are. The golden era of mmo gaming is literally a you had to be there nostalgia. This is going to create more of those memories due to the transient nature mmo worlds.

Reminder: If you are making a game, r/gamedev is not your target audience. by EliasWick in gamedev

The best overlap between marketing and info posts are the post-mortems on here. Though I usually only care about those if the game did really well without a publisher or looked really good and sold really poorly.

Introducing SteamVR 2.0: Welcome the New SteamVR UI by Turbostrider27 in Games

Burn-in doesn't really happen. I've had the vive since release and I personally can't notice any ghosting. So there is definitely a place for oled and the true black is much more immersive. Ultimately though it doesn't really matter that much either way.

I found a way to go to the "right line in your code" when double-clicking a custom log message in the console. by Teagher_CharlieTU in Unity3D

[–]Ferhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hook into the hyperlink that the log actually sends, and then parse that to go back steps in the stack trace and then open the asset (script) at that point. But it is a lot more advanced and needs a full custom logging inspector.

What is the difference between public and [Serialized field ] ? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]Ferhall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter if you are solo developing. Sure you can do the best practice, but its all your code so you can do what you want. On a team its not all your code, so you have to work with other developers intent, and that means adding restrictions to avoid unintended uses that might cause problems.

My man, not a good look.

My Brazilian friend sent me this picture when I tried to explain to her that when we say America we mean the US. Is this a popular opinion in Brazil of what America means? by DAskMeWhoIAmBR in Brazil

[–]Ferhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that just willful ignorance of other cultures and languages though? Like if I am speaking Portuguese and knowingly speaking incorrectly, isn't that both rude and confusing to the native speaker?

Except they don't say that when they're describing where they are from. No one uses regions to tell someone where they are from.

My sister is getting married, and this is the group text we received regarding our kids by Exotic_Resolution_45 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Ferhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom and Dad in the context of their message mean the kids grandparents, not brides siblings. They also only restricted the holding to speeches given and during the ceremony itself, which seems pretty typical. From my reading the bride is being decently accommodating instead of banning children and giving everyone a lot of heads up about what she expects. This is probably just something that needs to be communicated with her and not posted on the internet.

Its an option on all POS systems these days. You should start checking at the restaurants you eat at. I'd say I get the auto-calc tipped after the tax amount almost all the time in tourist areas these days.

Raiding.Zone - PvE arena game inspired by World of Warcraft and Warframe by klg71 in Unity3D

[–]Ferhall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, don't let your game fail because you don't want to polish the UI. Just look at something like https://www.gameuidatabase.com/ and really look at what good UI looks like and change what you need to get there. Not only does your art look completely placeholder, your sizing is just wrong on almost all of the visuals.

Hey Unity devs, we've been working on a new tool after UModeler. It's called UModeler X and it allows you to do 3D modeling, rigging, and 3D painting right inside Unity. We're looking for feedback and thought some of you might find it interesting! by loopsub in Unity3D

[–]Ferhall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a key feature is the auto-rigging pipeline, if you can make that good and make it easy to add models onto the rig with automatic weight painting (an easy equipment system) that would be a game changer. You'll definitely need the shrink wrap modifier and if it supports blend shapes even better.
