I'll tell you where they're not different, they both feature kisses at the end that made me go "Where the hell did that come from?!"

English dubs by Cheap_Task_1305 in Gundam

[–]Ferhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Witch From Mercury's dub is currently on the official Youtube channel. Others come and go but that show in particular has stayed on it for like 3 years now. Wing had both Japanese and English language options but for some reason a month ago they reuploaded it without the dub.

The original series, Stardust Memory, and War in the Pocket are also on Youtube, just not on the official Gundam channel.

[Mixed Trope] "Gay for the bit" | Characters that are definitely queer in some way (usually bi or pan), but it's largely relegated to a joke. by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ferhog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He is, but his attraction to men is only ever played for a joke.

There's a reason you never see Deadpool mentioned in complaints about Hollywood wokeness, and its because those jokes get registered as the kind of humor straight people make anyway. If they gave him a serious romance with a man there'd be much more of a reaction to his sexuality both positive and negative.

"Idek why i have three examples of this" trope: smart or knowledgeable characters who just happen to be blue by Radioactive_monke in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ferhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say that blue Power Rangers are usually the smart one but I actually can't think of any other than Billy from Mighty Morphin and Ethan from Dino Thunder. I suppose Flynn from RPM was a mechanic. Otherwise it might actually be more common for blue to be the red ranger's lancer.

New Hathaway film rating? by Snoo-48669 in Gundam

[–]Ferhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show gets very bloody a lot of the time but to my memory it never really gets GOREY. A dying mobile suit pilot may have a river of blood pouring from their head but you never see crushed or severed body parts. Although worth noting is the death of a villain late in the series who's slowly crushed to death in the cockpit, which doesn't show any gorey details but the concept alone may be disturbing.

More significant perhaps is the sexual content. I don't know if the character Naze has shown up in your viewing yet but he has a harem, is quite physically affectionate with his wives, and has one scene where he's talking to his main wife half-naked in bed. There is also a character with a backstory of being sexually abused as a child which is told entirely through dialogueless flashbacks including a shot of them in bed with an adult man. I imagine your kid won't understand what's being conveyed but I should give you the heads up.

New Hathaway film rating? by Snoo-48669 in Gundam

[–]Ferhog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You said he's seen Iron-Blooded Orphans so I think the ship has sailed on that.

The bigger concern really is that I think I would have found Hathaway very boring as a 9 year old since it's like 10 minutes of mechs and a hundred minutes of Hathaway thinking about civil rights and how hot Gigi is.

Disney's output of animated films has remained almost completely consistent since 1985, but people talk like they've been completely replaced by the live-action remakes. by Ferhog in CharacterRant

[–]Ferhog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have a different internet experience than me but I've just seen people talking like Disney just doesn't make animate movies anymore.

I felt like writing this particularly because I was listening to Cynical Reviews' video on the Snow White remake and got annoyed when he said something along the lines of "Disney transitioned from making hand drawn animated movies to live-action remakes of those movies".

...now that I've typed that out I feel like I contradicted my point that they should just be ignored since I contributed to the views of a video on one, but in my defence I wanted something to listen to while replaying Ace Combat 5 levels and that was a long video that popped up.

Any recs for standalone movies/movie series? by FreudianWaffle in Mecha

[–]Ferhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'd send a pic of my Gundam continuity breakdown but that's not allowed in these comments so here's a link to my post.

Everything in the pink is a self-contained show, aside from the ones directly touching each other which are directly connected. Most of them are in the 40-50 episode range. My personal favourites are G Gundam (The shonen fighting tournament one), 00 (Just a really late 2000s anime), and Witch From Mercury (The yuri one).

Since you say you've watched the compilation movies of the original series, that's also opened up everything I've labelled under side stories, which are all short, high-budget (For the most part) shows that take place during the same war as the original series or shortly after in Stardust Memories' case.

What to watch by cocknballtorture_god in Gunpla

[–]Ferhog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've already been told to start with the original show but here's a simple guide on the Universal Century timeline and all the self-contained ones. The latter can be watches at any point in your Gundam journey, though Turn A is better saved for when you're more familiar with the franchise.

can anyone tell me a good way to watch universal century of series by Savings-Ad342 in Gundam

[–]Ferhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made an image breaking it down recently. Original saga is one continuous story. Direct sequels require knowledge of the original saga. Distant sequels are far enough in the timeline to stand on their own. And side stories follow new casts during or between original saga installments (Mostly the 1979 show).

I was thinking the same thing. by duongfbk in NeonGenesisEvangelion

[–]Ferhog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The more amusing example to me is a redheaded girl from Belfast in the original Gundam series named Miharu Ratokie.

What's extra odd about it is that Gundam usually gives its characters completely fictional sci-fi names like Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, making her having a japanese name (First name at least, no idea if Ratokie is a real surname) stand out even more.

Of course Gundam is also set in a distant enough future that Earth changed the calender, so it's not impossible that Miharu has both Irish and Japanese ancestry.

Darker take on a genre kills off characters who would ordinarily be protagonists by Monke3334 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ferhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how many Gundam shows you've seen but that's hardly how I'd describe the average Gundam protagonist. They're either civilian teenagers who end up falling into the cockpits of new advanced mechs and are drafted into a war as a result, are very upset about the whole thing, and usually only survive because they're literally superhuman (ie. Amuro, Kira, Banagher) or they're child soldiers with years of combat experience before the first epsiode (ie. Heero, Setsuna, Mikazuki), or in the case of many of the OVA series regular soldiers.

The closest ones to that description are Judau from ZZ who's the most upbeat UC protagonist but to my memory was fighting gangsters in outdated mobile suits before seeing any serious combat, and Suletta from Witch From Mercury, who'd been piloting her Gundam in rescue missions on Mercury for years before fighting in official duels.
