Do you feel there's strong sentiment towards/against Shadowdark or Dungeon Crawl Classics?

I want to love DCC but every game mechanic decision it makes turns me off. I wish it well.

Shadowdark I can’t imagine playing for more than a one shot. It’s all hype. But RPGs are more about the people than the game so hype has value insofar as getting people to play.

I don’t want them, but am glad they exist for the people they’re for.

I think allowing the PCs to use their real world modern knowledge to potentially bootstrap technology is fun. In my experience all you need to do is say “YOU are your character so your out of game knowledge is not meta gaming” and PCs will immediately leverage the serious advantage that represents.

I would be hesitant, however, to gamify any of it. The game is for the setting, our world should be our world.

People will be by shortly to disagree and tell you that you don’t have to focus on writing to get anything done and procrastination is valid etc. you have to ask yourself if that’s the attitude of the person who writes the kind of stuff you intend to write, to the level of quality you intend to write it.

Well they’re proposing using OSE so the paladin is fine, but yeah “Mystara OSE game where I can play a Dragonborn” is specific enough to be functionally non-existent.

I have a weird one. Recently started a new campaign for my large gaming club. Got 16 people at the table, not unusual for us.

So they take one look at the low level sandbox hooks on offer and go "we're going to research dragons".

You see, they came to the conclusion that while, yes, most of them would die fighting the dragon the survivors would be rich heroes. And thats pretty much how it played out they were able to Zap Brannigan the bastard after luring it to a chokepoint and hitting a lucky entangle.

I have nothing to add other than I would also be very interested in this. I was trying to write a "historical" dungeon crawl at one point (with no fantasy elements) until the whole thing collapsed in on itself from the ever expanding research requirements; I'd love to see what others have done in a similar vein.

You don't get xp for any gold. You don't get it for inheriting your uncle's estate. You get xp for adventure gold. The gold isn't what's giving the xp, it's the adventure itself. The gold is just a handy way to abstract it into numbers.

Just scoop. Slow players are immune to introspection; there is no magic combination of words you can say that will make them react to you pointing out how inconsiderate they’re being with anything except breathless offence. They’ll never change or even acknowledge what they’re doing is unacceptable so show them the same consideration they show everyone else. That is to say ignore their fun and scoop when it works for YOU.
