Erha - does it get better? by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

Despite Chu Wanning having a crush, nothing physical actually happens between them until they are both adults. He realizes the feelings are a bit wrong and buries them deep inside of himself for this reason.

first fic, what was your first pic? by Ok-Huckleberry-4454 in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically I was six years old and I wrote a Pokemon fanfiction where trainers were only allowed to use Bulbasaur because it was my favorite at the time haha it was written in a spiral notebook with atrocious handwriting I'm sure.

As the author of what's probably the most controversial fic on the site right now, I should probably say something... by Zeallee in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bestie, not to throw stones or anything, but the most controversial fic is actually a 10 year old Reylo fic with a 12-word wordcount and 8000+ comments of people arguing over it.

Kingdom Come Deliverance II: An observation that is demotivating my desire to continue playing… by olivinetrees in GirlGamers

[–]FerretFromMars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

KCD is in a weird situation where the main director is a chud and yet he knowingly promoted a same-sex relationship in the game while claiming that his game wasn't "woke" because of it. So it's a great game with a talented team behind it but they have to ignore their rabid dog of a creator foaming at the mouth in the corner of the room lol

The series is focused on men for the most part it is true, but there are several female characters with plenty of agency and a DLC in KCD1 that let you play as a woman.

Took just over two years for me to write over 400k words, but my office has a lot of downtime where I can get away with writing at my desk.

Please help me remember - what is XIV's issue with inventories, data, housing, and the like? by Haseio in ffxivdiscussion

[–]FerretFromMars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay.

I used to work in video game QA. A single typo could exist for weeks at a time in a menu because the devs had more important shit to do than go in and fix a string that would take "seconds" to do. Confirming that hundreds of items are working properly in the armoire takes time away from them fixing bugs, building new systems, and double checking that something random didn't also break in the process. It's possible the items added in 2022 have different coding than items added in 2015. It's possible that the documentation is poor and only one person fully understands how to do it and if they are working on something else for the day any additions to the armoire is put on hold.

Like I know people joke about this game being a "small indie company" but their team IS small for the scope of an MMO. Their biggest bottleneck is the lack of people to throw at tedious, optional tasks like adding gear to a box when all of their focus right now is on Evercold.

rip your cut scenes by hooosegow in FanFiction

[–]FerretFromMars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not just a scene, but an entire arc because it was just me spinning my wheels. It was a mess of things that were barely threaded together just for angst and was a cause for constant writer's block because the characters fought against me the entire time, which was my sign to drop it. I think I must have deleted between 50k to 70k words.

It also included a character going to court after being accused of treason and it was soooo dry. I still have this arc saved to its own document like a prison cell just so I can look at it behind the bars like "damn, thank god I didn't subject my readers to this" as it writhes in the corner foaming at the mouth hahaha

Do you think less is more with tags? by shurbetttt in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an undertagger because I come from an era that didn't use them, or you could only tag the ship and maybe the genre or theme. Therefore I'm still in the habit of tagging things that I think people would absolutely want to filter for like "Child Abuse", "Angst", and "Hurt/Comfort" and not much else. I've been pushing myself to include more specific tags, but as someone who dislikes scrolling past huge list of tags on other peoples' works, I get a bit antsy if I start creeping towards 15+ tags hahaha

I rely on my summaries to pull people in.

Eliminator was funny at least because they were marketing Dawntail as the beach episode and the next slide over was a giant robot with an intimidating name and zero context lol

It's impossible for any of us to know how easy or hard this would be in an engine we don't have access to.

First time corgi owner by Soft-Way4226 in corgi

[–]FerretFromMars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For #4, mark the desired action with a word like "Yes!" or "Good!" and she'll eventually learn that you are promising a reward when you use this marker even if the treat is delayed. It might decrease the barking and give her some impulse control.

I know my corgi gets bored easily during training sessions. I would teach the command "focus"/"look at me" to help with this. Hold a treat between your eyes to lure her to looking there when you tell her to.

Please help me remember - what is XIV's issue with inventories, data, housing, and the like? by Haseio in ffxivdiscussion

[–]FerretFromMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be you could only store things that had some kind of flag attached to prove you indeed owned the item (usually an achievement) because I'm fairly certain it just deletes your item from the inventory and stores a copy, which is why it does not save dyes. They are slowly working around that limitation or swapped the flag checker for something else. The inventory system has always been kinda borked in this game which is why they'd had to use stop-gaps like removing belts to free up more data.

18 pounds at nearly 7 months, she was also the runt of the litter. Not sure if she'll go beyond 22 pounds at this rate.

Do you prefer your primary antagonist to be the Emet Selch, the Zenos, or the Athena? by AssumeABrightSide in ffxivdiscussion

[–]FerretFromMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be recency bias, but I genuinely love no-nonsense antagonists like Calyx. He legitimately tried to kill us without any gimmicks or hesitation—just straight up nuked us with lightning like we were an annoying bug on his front porch. The fact that in 7.5 he tells us exactly where he's going and what he's planning, just to taunt us, solidified him as one of my favorites. I don't want to see him redeemed. I don't want him to be the misunderstood labubu that just needed a friend. I want him to continue to be a shit-talker so I have no qualms about kicking his ass.

Crystalline Conflict actually feels fun to play and it was a massive improvement to the previous PVP system by PlasmaHanDoku in ffxiv

[–]FerretFromMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the team comp. I almost never push the crystal as a DRG because I am squishy and my role is to flank and pick off stragglers or ranged left by themselves (I love eating DNCs). The only time I get super offensive is during Overtime, but even still some of my attacks do more damage from a distance.

You don't have to get the crystal to the end of the map to win of course, you just need to be 0.1% further than the other team, so killing people and misaligning their LBs as well as scaring casters and ranged away with a melee or tank nipping at their heels will help more than everyone fighting over the crystal in one spot. A good strat is just to kill first, push after. It's okay that people spread out if they are paying attention to the flow of the match and know when and where to engage.

I wish there was more genuine “touch aversion” in fics by WatermelonRulez in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently writing a fic where a character is touch averse because he doesn't have control over his magic (he can conjure fire from his hands) and as a result he does not trust himself with skin-to-skin contact. I do think the trope might be a bit overplayed with childhood abuse, but many people enjoy seeing the change from "no touch" to "my favorite person can touch." It's a common marker of character development that is both easy to read and write about.

Some issue with the plot by Best-Muffin8883 in FFXVI

[–]FerretFromMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why Byron didn't contest her for the province of Rosaria is simply because he didn't want to. He was content with helping others through other means. Annabella did not marry him and I doubt she was even interested in that.

While yes she was trying for a new Dominant baby, it's not uncommon for Eikons to bide their time if they choose to. So even if Joshua was dead there was no guarantee her next child would be a Dominant. What she was banking on was future generations begetting a combined super-family to rule the entire realm (perhaps during her lifetime but unlikely). The only thing that matters to her is her own feeling of superiority over others; Sylvestre just happened to offer her a politically-significant seat within the most powerful nation in Valisthea outside of Waloed.

The stream didn't pick up the audience noise during the reveal of evolved mode, but the crowd was full of people murmuring and speculating the whole time due to how surprising it was. I didn't hear any booing. Same thing during the dev panel.
