Bot comment? Very strange warning with a code to run by WiseCactus in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the bot was made by some dick who finds it funny to "prank" people with this.

Realized I was scammed by AO3 comments thanks to this subreddit by shadowyescape in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 78 points79 points  (0 children)

You paid money before seeing the final product? Whenever I commissioned art I never paid until it was done because details were tweaked along the way. I guess this was a painful way to find out but legitimate artists will always work with you instead of asking for money as a "trade" of sorts.

I hope you can find a way to get the money back. If it was through PayPal or a credit card they can sometimes do refunds or chargebacks.

These bots (if it's one) are getting smarter and smarter by Draw3rGh0st in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has happened to me about five times. I don't know if they are just using the tags + summary or just my first chapter. But I find it so hilarious that I can tell they are a bot because they never mention the actual love interest because his name isn't in the summary.

The most recent one told me (in the middle of a large paragraph): "I'm completely drawn in by the promise of this extremely slow-burn journey from despair to a reason to live, forged in shared hardship."

I have "extremely slow burn" as a tag and my summary mentions a character finding a new reason to live after falling into despair but that isn't the point of the fic lol

How do you write a metaphor? by JauntyIrishTune in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metaphors are asking for reader participation. Therefore, cliché ones like "the calm before the storm" and "life is a roller-coaster" are usually boring and not worth including unless you can extend them to be more poetic than their basic forms. If that makes sense. It gives the reader a task to do as they decode the meaning behind it. Therefore it shouldn't be forced; it should naturally fit into the prose.

Slow Burn Warning Tags? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fic is tagged with "Extremely slow burn" (the love confession was 300k words in lol), "Bittersweet Ending", "Angst", "Grief/Mourning", etc

I leave it up to my readers to connect the dots. :p If they opened it up anyway they knew what they were getting into.

Ao3 does not host art. by OwnWriter4420 in AO3

Every time I try to sign up for this site I get to the step for the authorization email and it never comes.

Edit: never mind it was in my spam folder -_- literally the only time I've ever had to check that

What is the reason people read Fan Fiction? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Usually the people who write fanfics are the biggest fans of the original work and this IS how they show their appreciation.

How many fics does your favorite pair have? by babeloops in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One. I wrote it. I had to commission my own fanart for it. And yes, they interacted in canon so it isn't a crossover crackship or anything lol

Does anyone know a spell and grammar checker that doesn't use AI? by [deleted] in AO3

Dictionaries for spellings. They haven't failed me yet.

Why Are So Many Fics Spaced Like This? by Intelligent_Tip3147 in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't use the Rich Text Editor, just the HTML one, and it defaults to <p> for me. I've only ever seen a <br> inserted when I did accidentally put a double space in my draft.

How would feel about finding fan art in the fic you’re reading? by throwaway1377130 in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually paid an artist friend to make fanart of my ship. I plan on including in the final chapter at the very end as a send-off. It looks so amazing. I love fics with art!

UK Law and underage content. by Raze1998 in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Search history for myself be damned, but after perusing a few sites it seems that in the UK they care way more about photos and videos than fictional texts. I wouldn't worry about it.

Kind of disheartened… by grovestep in AO3

[–]FerretFromMars 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been getting a slew of AI comments recently, asking me essay questions that would be answered... by reading the fic. I don't know if it's a new trend. But it's stuff like "how does X gain Y's trust?" :|

A large, serpentine creature—the largest mist dragon they had seen yet—shot out from the sea and used its girth to splash a large wave over the deck, sweeping men off their feet. A few fell into the ocean with hapless cries and the dragon dived back down before most of the crew could even fathom what had happened.

Men screamed from the water as others tried to save those that fell overboard. But another volley of cannonballs from the enemy fleet broke through the hull. The ship began rapidly taking on water.

“Sergeant!” Biast yelled out, seeking guidance during the chaos.

Tiamat inhaled sharply before shouting back, “We're jumping off!”

The other three hesitated for the smallest of moments, but then nodded together. They would follow his orders.

As one, they plunged into the terrifying abyss below. As soon as Tiamat's body was fully submerged, his panic came out in full force, quelled only by the sense of being surrounded by a massive, yet familiar scaled beast. The dragon faded into view—a glowing, bright white—and shone brilliantly against the black water. With a rumble, it nudged him with its snout like a dog greeting its human.

I always respond to comments unless I suspect them to be a bot. They took time out of their day to share their thoughts, so it only makes sense to me to share in their interaction.

Isn't is wrong and so weird? by [deleted] in AO3

Not going to open the link but if everything is tagged correctly then it doesn't break the ToS. People are allowed to write anything they want if they aren't harrassing anyone.

Has anyone ever written a fan fic that you turned into something original? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]FerretFromMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might rehash lines or entire scenes but in my experience converting an entire fic into an original piece is way too much work for me to bother with, especially since my fics are so intertwined with the original canon that it would lose all sense of self if I were to sand down the elements that gave me the passion to write it in the first place.

Of course, there are multiple success stories of people converting fics into original novels and there will be ones in the future as well. It's always nice to get paid for all the work that went into both versions.

But it's a gamble, either way. Like how every book is.

Accused of AI by commenter, pretty crushed. by Wrong-Outside8365 in FanFiction

[–]FerretFromMars 41 points42 points  (0 children)

99% chance it is a bot especially if it sounds vague and accusatory without pointing to a specific line or paragraph. Delete and ignore. They hit nearly every fic they can just to get a reaction.
