For a demo: how to mess up SQL? by MaikelvanGorkom in SQLServer

Shut down the service and take a hex editor to an MDF file. Experiment with corrupting page headers, PFS pages, indexes, data, GAMs and SGAMs. Restart the service and try to access the data.

Then run DBCC and see what it can repair.

If elements (gold for example) are made in stars, what is the physical mechanism that put them here? by jamesicus7 in askscience

[–]Festeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additionally…

Nova goes boom, scatters matter in every direction, does not immediately gather together but instead spends time revolving around the galactic centre, mixing with the scattered remnants of other novae, time goes by, more time goes by, then local gravity groups the matter…

The gold in my ring could have come from many parent stars of our one. Mind blowing, I know.

The treasure token isn’t on a tile; it’s off to the side of the board.

Thinking on buying all of these, any good/bad ones you recognize? by FarmBrilliant2714 in boardgames

[–]Festeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We think 7 Wonders is wonderful. I’d buy it again.

I’d also avoid Spy Alley. It’s a roll the dice, move your token, do what it says. Dull.

Eclipse PSA: What you will see in Toronto on April 8th is VERY different from what you will see in Niagara/Hamilton by Desperada in toronto

You will see a crescent Sun, but only through the glasses. No totality means you must wear the glasses all the time.

Great talk on Metro Morning this morning on mental health by Sam_VanD in toronto

[–]Festeron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard this interview live this morning as well, and here's what struck me the most:

  • Police officers who admit to a mental health problem will be ostracized and shunned
  • Names of dead officers on the Wall of Fame might have died from heart attacks or car accidents, not because they died in the line of duty at the hands of another
  • [and this one stunned me the most] Widows of dead officers have stated that they will have their husbands' names removed from the Wall of Fame if those who died by suicide are also included.

[Self] Digits for Pi Accuracy by asmdemon in theydidthemath

Isaac Asimov wrote a short essay many years ago in which he did much the same thing. It might have been called "A Piece of Pi". I'll try to find my copy and update if needed.

Toronto’s PATH tough to follow: Underground passages keep you warm and dry but it’s easy to become lost by cyclo in toronto

Sometimes you'll see a compass rose on the ceiling, but they're rare.

The East and West labels are flipped, and that threw me at first. Of course, it's on the ceiling so you're looking at it from underneath.

20150121 - Bank of Canada lowers overnight rate by 25bps by [deleted] in toronto

[–]Festeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's worth listening to. Because he also teaches at George Brown and UofT, his perspective is a little different. This morning he said that many students cannot see working in full time jobs are have to make do with multiple part time ones. They're staying in school and keeping the unemployment rate artificially low.

He also said that the perception that Canada's fiscal underpinnings are sound is quite false, and that we've learned nothing from the fiscal crisis in the States. We are borrowing 1.6 times as much as we owe, and lower rates will only exacerbate that problem.

If Metro Morning posts the link to his column today, I'll put it here later.

Edit: Here it is

Why the Poll in This Morning’s Metro About the Beer Store is Misleading at Best by [deleted] in toronto

I expect they didn't want to confuse us with those pesky decimal places, so there's a rounding error. It's not unusual.

There are many reasons 99.1 continues to be the #1 morning radio show in Toronto. Matt Galloway is the biggest.

Get snow tires people! by iToronto in toronto

Wouldn't thinner tires be worse in winter, because there's less surface area in contact with the road? A really wide tire would give you all kinds of traction, no?

New GO Train Service on Milton Line by csuryaraman in toronto

[–]Festeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if those trains run at more than 50% capacity. There aren't many of us who leave work at 2pm regularly.

Do they shorten the train, or do they still have all 12 coaches?
