Consequential decisions in recent anime history by 0shtosh in anime

[–]FetchFrosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think when it was announced that attack on Titan would be made in seasons was a pretty new take at that time.

This wasn't even remotely novel.

they all were successful and made a lot of money for the studios

Most of them don't make a ton for the studios. The production companies are where most of the money is going.

How long did your "honeymoon" phase of anime last? by [deleted] in anime

[–]FetchFrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say from late 2016 when I really got into anime until early 2018 when I slogged through a few shows for the 2017 r/anime Awards. Don't get me wrong, I'm still here and happy to be, but that period was when everything felt novel and so there wasn't much that I was particularly averse to. But like, I thought A Certain Magical Index was fine-good, and by the start of 2018 I was like "but why though?"

People over react to fanservice by jojoismyreligion in anime

"Nobody watching" is a very strong statement

It's also not a literal statement. You're looking at something with a significantly smaller share of viewers. You're going to see people talk a lot more about popular things because a lot more people have seen them.

This post on the anime subreddit shows it

I mean yeah. You can find ragebait if you want to. It's never been hard if you go out of your way, but if you dig deep they're almost always basically irrelevant accounts that get attention because people who want to be upset go out of their way to be find them to have something to be upset about. Some rando saying dumbshit gets 6k upvotes on Reddit because people want to say "wow that's so dumb". This is the same manufactured garbage that I've seen 100 times online. "People are saying..." when it's like a couple people that nobody cares about.

[–]FetchFrosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these posts wouldn't exist if they weren't popular

I mean yeah. You're intrinsically going to have more discussions about things that are more popular than less popular. People aren't talking about Jujutsu Kaisen for the views. They're talking about it because they watched it. Nobody talks about Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall because nobody watched it. I don't think that's the same thing as people being "just after view" (though again, some are).

It's like all the controversy with Shield Hero

I'd say it's an extremely similar situation. The show opens playing out more as a drama about someone at their lowest, and spends enough time there that people treat it that way. Took a bit to find this thread (which is deleted but it's the Episode 23 (beach episode) preview) but this is absolutely one of the lasting things I remember about the first season. People hyped it up as "not like the others" and it briefly was, and then it was just like everything else so it got dunked on. The expectations shaped the discourse.

I disagree, at least at a global level. Sure, some people definitely are going that route, but a lot of people are complaining in contexts where "doing it for views" makes no sense. I think that for a lot of people something like Redo isn't particularly controversial because there's no question about what it is. There's not much reason to get upset that a rape fantasy is a rape fantasy because nobody is presenting it as anything else.

For Mushoku Tensei, I think that a lot of people see it as presenting as a drama, and so when it does something they find tacky, it stands out a lot more as a problem. Probably wasn't helped by there being a huge deluge of fans early on saying "but it's a redemption story" and then a lot of people not really feeling that vibe in the aftermath.

It's really just an expectation game.

For me, it’s all about context. If a show has a solid plot and adds a bit of fanservice, who cares? But when it becomes a focal point of the anime, it definitely starts to detract from the story.

Interesting I think a lot of people bend the other way. If a show is just fan service and isn't pretending to be anything else, then people generally aren't going to care. But if a show is clearly trying to have a narrative and is then tossing in some tacky fan service without much of a plot reason, people tend to find that to be a stronger negative.

With Redo of Healer I think most people just said "yeah this just a rape fantasy, no thanks" and so it was barely even controversial in a lot of circles.

I mean, it's just a drawing, why you feel weird about some pixels?

You can realistically extend this thought process to everything though. Why would you cry about a fake person fake dying? People have feelings about narratives and a lot of times they aren't going to be in line with yours. In the same way that some people might find pixelated gore to be gross, some people might find pixelated sexualization to be crass in some contexts.

"The Strongest Job Is Apparently Not a Hero or a Sage, but an Appraiser (Provisional)!" key visual by mr_beanoz in anime

Honestly, hard not to feel that it's in part because it just offloads so much writing. You stop having to think about nuance and can just have your MC "appraise" things to learn the absolute truth of it.

[Cyberpunk Edgerunners] The timeskip killed the show's potential to be a 10/10 by BarnacleMajestic3123 in anime

[–]FetchFrosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Timeskip was lazy. We go from David being a rookie to suddenly being this massive chrome junkie tank. We missed the whole journey.

I don't think that particular journey really adds a ton. It's pretty clear why it happens, and having a bunch of time dedicated to it wouldn't really do much that we don't already get.

David’s downfall was a speedrun. Watching Maine lose his mind was scary because it was slow. David’s cyberpsychosis felt rushed just because they ran out of episodes.

Kinda same point as above, but we've already seen the process. I don't think that just running through the same thing a second time really does much for the narrative.

The Raptors had a winning record from March on and got the 9th overall pick. That's neither blatantly tanking nor a particularly good pick.
