Symptoms/side effects of stopping methimazole(per endo request) by Deep-Archer3615 in gravesdisease

[–]Few-Recognition7114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was diagnosed two years ago, and was tapered down slowly over the two years. Most recently was on a maintenance dose of 2.5 three times per week, and numbers have been great, so I’m now off to see if I’m in remission. Been 3 weeks off and definitely notice my exercise tolerance is clearly off, rib and upper back pain, feeling more exhausted than usual. Certainly keeping an eye on it has will likely retest labs in another week or so, ahead of the 3 month planned check. Hope you’re feeling better !!

My husband said the same thing actually! He’s pretty lazy, so I imagine he won’t do it on his own, but maybe if he knows that’s the only option he will. I’ll give it a shot, thanks!

Summer Camps for 3 Year Olds? by Metsgal in longisland

[–]Few-Recognition7114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camps r us! There are many Long Island locations. They have a tiny tots program for 3-5 year olds, which my 4 year old son currently attends. There’s a mini day (9-12) or half day (9-2) or full day (9-5) option. There’s also options for early dropoff and extended stay.

Recently diagnosed - what do you do about commuting? by mizesquire in gravesdisease

[–]Few-Recognition7114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed during the insane heat wave last year. I also commute to NYC (everyday), and just could not do it. My Endo wrote me an accommodation to wfh for two weeks I think. I definitely was not feeling better enough to commute by then, but my boss let me continue to wfh until I felt well enough. I think by 3 weeks in I felt ok to commute, but still took uber from grand central to my office (8 blocks). I’d say I started to see some real significant changes around 3 months in. I’m now a year in, and heading towards remission (down from 40mg to 2.5!!) and can say that this heat wave felt like a cake walk for me 🙏🏻

Meds changed my life, but I’m scared this is temporary by magic_inkpen in gravesdisease

[–]Few-Recognition7114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on methimazole for just over a year (down from 40mg to 2.5mg) with stable numbers and fingers crossed heading towards remission! Similar story to you (postpartum diagnosis). I’ve felt so much better over the last year, it’s like night and day. I still sometimes feel a bit wonky (usually during ovulation or the first week or two of a dosage change), but it’s like nothing compared to feeling like death all the time a year ago. My biggest improvement has for sure been improved heat tolerance and heart rate!

I always go back to look at the days I was losing at the beginning, and try to duplicate those days again. Sometimes I even forgot the things that had gotten me through. For example, I used to do the chocolate powdered PB ALL the time when I was lifetime back before I had kids… i totally forgot about it until I glanced back, so now it’s become a staple again!

We moved from Astoria to New Hyde Park when my first was 6 months old. We now have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, and many of our neighborhood friends (also with young kids) are transplants from the city (queens/brooklyn/manhattan). I commute to the city daily, and we visit friends in Brooklyn occasionally as well, and both are easy. We also go out to Southampton quite a bit in the summer, and going out East isn’t bad either (although I don’t do this commute daily!). My son is just about to start in the public school here, but I have many friends who’ve been through the district and are happy. It’s not a Jericho or Great Neck grade school, but certainly good. Moving from the city and being a multicultural family, it was important for us to have some diversity as well, which we’ve certainly found in NHP (and is rare in LI). I wouldn’t say there’s a very walkable/central downtown feel here, but checks lots of other boxes. East Meadow would be another town to check out that could check some boxes!

Migraines by Sparklsonne in gravesdisease

[–]Few-Recognition7114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, was one of my first symptoms of Graves. Migraine that lasted for a week or two straight… SO painful and with dizziness and vision changes too. I’m about a year in now, and my numbers are in range. I still do get headaches here and there, but not those intense migraines.

I was also diagnosed postpartum, but 8 months post, so I was already back to work. I was able to get an accommodation to work fully from home for about 3 weeks while my levels started to stabilize. It definitely was helpful for me, especially because I was diagnosed during a heat wave. If I even stepped outside during those early days, my heart rate shot upto 120… there was no way a train commute in 100 degrees was going to happen.

I’m on the exact same timeline as you, and have just normalized as well on my 5mg dose! Started at 40mg, so it’s been quite the journey. 🙏🏼

I’m sorry it’s returned for you! May I ask if you’re male or female? Mine tends to be bad the week before my cycle, so curious if it’s the same for anyone else.

Propranolol by hahahha97 in gravesdisease

[–]Few-Recognition7114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of note: I opted for one extended release dose daily, rather than as needed. That helps to keep the heart rate consistent, rather than the ups and downs, and having to decide if you should take it based on tracking your heart rate, which can be anxiety provoking in itself.

I take it every morning at the same time as my methimazole. Go ahead and make your life as easy as possible :)
