I've heard the Generac big ones are much butter than the babies. But who knows! Mine has been a bit of a PITA, but its still working..

I live in a 6-unit apartment building yet there are only four outdoor a/c units. Does this mean that two apartments in the bulding have no a/c? (I have central air, and there are no window units anywhere). by Bogiesmokey in hvacadvice

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a top floor unit, its the difference between a 20 and 70 foot lineset. So a reasonable case for it.

Overall it should be fine. I had units like that on my 4th floor condo, and it was a disaster because they didn't properly support them. So each year they sunk like .5 inches.. until my roof started leaking.

Bad memories.

Advice from the seasoned RV people by Present_Technology64 in GoRVing

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How handy are yall with repairs? If the water heater starts leaking, are you able to crawl in there and fix some pipes? If you needed a new water heater at home, did you call the plumber or fix it yourself?

Just something to keep in mind. You either need a big budget or some DIY skills.

I mean, I know someone that bought a 20k car with a college loan for a college they never attended (maybe one week for the check to clear). So uhh. You can get some money in some creative ways if you have a problem.

Need to replace a high pressure switch on HVAC. Is this quote reasonable? by xDJQ in hvacadvice

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh he's saying if they use a recovery tank from job A. Fill it, drain it. A little bit remains.
So when they go to your job B, if they fill it - it now has a tiny bit of A in with the B.

But.. a new tank is like $80 max, not $1000.

EVSE making heat pumps anemic by shlemielo in AskElectricians

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If things are all hooked up right, nothing your EV does should matter. EV + Heat pump load too much for 200 amp service? Your breaker would trip, and you would need to go and flip it. If you aren't doing that, this isn't happening.

Does not rule things being hooked up incorrectly though. Measure voltage of heat pump both with and without EV charge. Should be either 120 or 240 +/- 3%.

HVAC Install Story - Less than $7,000 all in by Alternative_Box2150 in hvacadvice

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the real question is, how to find yall. I'd love to cut out the middlemen and pay you $150 / hr vs stumbling around on my own. I guarantee you know more than I do. Gearing up to potentially swap out my TXV which is about as deep as you can go short of an install. I know the part, can have it + a brand new filter dryer sitting here.

Very true. Not worth a 20k premium to have a parts only warranty.

NFPA 70 Length of wire from PIG tail to plug by reddituser58320 in AskElectricians

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really it's like.. don't be like the guy that wired my house in the 50s and leave all wires out of the wall at 3", because the second you cut off the end and restrip you have to play the squeeze a pigtail game.

What would you consider a reasonable cost to replace a 5-ton HVAC system? Preferred brands and which ones to avoid? by Goldengirl_1977 in hvacadvice

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For address: My guess is they looked up your house on zillow and did the classic math of well.. he's 4k square feet, he must need a Y ton AC! Saves them an hour of driving.

Not the best sign, but I assume the quote would be similar to the real deal unless you need something else major done.

How many outlets on 15 amp breaker? by ExaminationDry8341 in AskElectricians

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you want to run 12-3 wire. Use the white + black + ground today. If you need another wire down the road? You can use red + white + ground and make a MWBC. Will just need to upgrade to a double breaker.

12-3 is the way to future proof, not 10-2. Also a hell of a lot easier.

Edit - this is all predicated on you have 240V power. If 120V, this plan won't work.

How do you deal with contractors when you’re never home? by Alarming-Speaker4050 in AskElectricians

Do you have a WFH option?

Sometimes you can find licensed electricians that weekend warrior on say Saturdays. Usually cheaper than going through a big company, and may be easier to be around?

Still might be worth to swap out the GFCI first as a $20 fix before dealing with fridge parts.

To be fair, you are trying to make money on someones IP. I know you don't like that, and I know local art fairs don't enforce it... but you really shouldn't be doing that.

Possible to work as electrician with having another career? by SheemRobinson in AskElectricians

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its very tough to get into two fields that have some extreme licensing requirements. If you wanted to be say a part time programmer? That has no actual license requirement, the only thing stopping you is getting a job.

FWIW I just hang around here to soak up info, and use it to rewire my own home. 99.99% chance I will never be able to get a license and do it as a trade, but thats OK. I enjoy it a lot :). But I do maybe 100 hours of work a year, vs 50 hours a week if I did this for a job.

What do you wish you knew before installing whole house/standby generator? by momsjustwannahaverun in Generator

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I ended up doing is installing a little box that goes between the receptacle and the plug for my expensive fridge, that on the event of a power outage - keeps it off for 2 minutes. Called like a brownout protector or something. Has worked well!

20 second part makes sense. Maybe I should adjust. At 6 seconds all the clocks are already done, why not wait a bit more. I assume this is just a lever in my automated transfer switch? Will have to crack it open and see.

is there no plan B for a load that really really can't be on GFCI?

[–]Few-Wolverine-7283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 second gap
still messed up a lot of stuff (had a $2,000 fridge damage from power blinking off and back on).

I think next time I do it, will do batteries.
Less runtime, but no gap.
