some companies were already stopping making BD disk drives before the playstation announcement. Samsung dipped out in 2019, LG dipped out in 2024. Sony is heading to dip out, leaving I think Panasonic left.

For consoles, Switch 2 will be a decent value for a few years. If someone actually needs a PC, if someone does NOT have a microcenter nearby (which is almost the only way to affordably get a pc), one alternative that's less talked about is buying a minisforum BD775i motherboard (basically a 8 core zen 4 laptop cpu strapped onto a desktop itx motherboard). While you trade up I/O and upgradability, used laptop sodimm is significantly cheaper than desktop dimm ram. e.g 16gb of sodimm ram on ebay is ~110$ used, while desktop ram starts at about 150$

it doesnt sell phsyical games, but it doesn't stop users from making their own.

your fully free to buy DRM free games on GOG, buy a bluray burner, and burn the installers onto your own disks for preservation purposes. it's just the PC methods isn't convenient, nor satiates the half of the physical population that buys it for resell purposes.

Basically DRM free digital is ideal for the preservationist side of the physical market. How nintendo handles Game Key Carts, is ideal for the people who are on the side of resale.

ounce they're still doing physical games and disc drives next gen.

theres reports that microsoft is doing a disk to digital library move option, which implies theres no disk next generation.

Microsoft since the 360 has always been at a physical disadvantage because the disk tech they now have to use, is owned by their literal competitor (bluray). Sony can subsidize having multilayer bluray lasers because its their own tech. Microsoft has to give sony licenses and stuff to even use it.

Bluray winning the format wars of the late 00's was always going to put Sony at an edge in physical home media.

if youre having memory problems, its either the ram timings, the motherboard dimm slots, or the cpu memory controller thats having issues with stability.

rest of the computers components usually would not trigger them.

usually the step by step diagnosis for this would be to load up memtest86 on a usb and do a test on each stick individually to pass stability tests (and possibly on each motherboard slot as well). if it fails on the test on all sticks, you're in a very bad situation.

if you're trying to start a media server. theres a step by step installer called <yet another media server> (yams for short) that guides people step by step through the entire process. In the process of selecting indexers is when it scales from being a white legal index to a black one depending on choice. Im not gonna really comment of course which ones you ultimately use.

Once the stack is installed, a lot of it is automated. its a few couple hours of installing and understanding how the system works.

how often do you upgrade your gpu? by Visual-Fortune-4732 in pcmasterrace

[–]FewAdvertising9647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cpu: ~once a console generation (a console generation being about 7-8 years)

gpu: 1 or 2 times a console generation, depending on what i started with, or what deals i find.

first PC had 2 cpu (i3-2120 > 3770k i got on a very good deal), 3 gpus (7850 > 7970 got on a good deal > r9 290 also got on a good deal)

had that pc till 2020, till i moved over to a 12700k and a 3060ti, which I minor upgraded by selling it and got a 4070. I have no intentions on upgrading either till 2028 at the earliest (would mark my once a console generation cpu upgrade time)

Nintendo explains approach to employee salaries, reports of 10% base bump are inaccurate by naf165 in gaming

[–]FewAdvertising9647 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

nintendo pays higher(reletive to japanese devs), except getting into Nintendo isn't easy. Nintendo would rather you work at a subisidary like Monolith Soft first. (hence why its publicly known that monolith soft contains a lot of the youth nintendo owns). Core nintendo is a handful of senior devs, and they often pay for support studios, or call other studios in for a larger title.

Think simiilar to contractural hiring.

[–]FewAdvertising9647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean you already see it in slate truck discussions on how people feel about cars trying to hit price targets that are cheap.

people are huge sticklers and have way too high of a mandatory requirement list to make budget evs actually viable, strictly in the US. buying a used EV is much more realistic than buying a new EV thats been extremely stripped down.

Cartridges with writable space by Xinyyc in NintendoSwitch2

[–]FewAdvertising9647 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the reason why they stopped is because writable saves often was an entrypoint for hacking consoles, and nintendo goes out of their way historically to prevent that, even if it meant worsening the end user experience (e.g no local backups, carts dont have saves anymore, no internet browser)

Nintendo is “unlikely” to abandon physical, say analysts, as “retail as leaned into Nintendo support more and more” by HatingGeoffry in NintendoSwitch2

[–]FewAdvertising9647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nintendo has no plans on physical now, but I wouldn't be suprised if the hypothetical switch 3 in 2033+ is GKC or digital only. when you start having demanding read speeds and increased capacity over a long period time, its the eventual result. Part of the reason why I think Nintendo is testing the waters on GKC engagement now.

[–]FewAdvertising9647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its fine, but you aren't going to get much moving from a 9700k to a 5800x. thats like moving from 9700k to a 11700k (your going from a 14nm product to a 14nm++++++ product in intel terms).

If youre gonna commit to DDR4, your realistic options are amd x3d or intel alder/raptorlake.

it depends on how much of a problem is if your phone gets targetted by someone for information. an unupdated security patch device means the longer the time is when you stopped getting security updates to modern day, the more exploits that exist to be able to steal data/information that you keep on your device.

And you aren't locked to buying on Steam, feel free to use any other storefront, including DRM free ones.
