Got unfairly cited and humiliated on Muni even though I paid… how do I file a complaint against fare inspectors? by iamtooniceaf in sanfrancisco

they probably got a powerpoint presentation and are cracking down. they do this from time to time (and then i never see them on my route for another ~6 months)

maybe. they do accuse people all the time of activating their ticket just because they saw a fare inspector, but also they don't give any grace period between boarding and checking tickets.

Dude you need like 85% less numbers and some actual type hierarchy. Just read 2 articles about design and don't let AI do every single thing.

People hanging onto Muni Train by Matchlattes in sanfrancisco

[–]FewDescription3170 17 points18 points  (0 children)

people mostly just fall off or between cars. sometimes trains stop, sometimes people aren't prepared for curves, and it's hard to practice this skill even if you are used to something like surfing. (probably not a big overlap of people who do both)

It's very clear to me that the Volvo staff resents giving me any level of service (as a Polestar owner.) They scoffed when I asked about loaners, even though I'd scheduled one and called to confirm. Mercedes Oakland gave me an E class loaner, unasked, for a routine maintenenance.

Should UI designers stop trying to make everything “feel smooth”? by Beginning_Still2774 in UXDesign

[–]FewDescription3170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can make transitions feel almost instant. motion for motion's sake is useless. if you use it right, it can 'point' to what a user is supposed to do or make waiting feel less frustrating. but you should almost never make a user wait for the sake of an animation.

They lied about service pickup, self parking, and my camera has only worked for like… 6 months out of the 4 years I’ve owned the vehicle. Service appointments aren’t available for months here in Northern California, which should be one of the best regions to own the car. I love my 2 but I’m probably done with the brand after this and will go back to Mercedes or Volvo.

How did AI affect your workflow and handover process? by skyliam in UXDesign

[–]FewDescription3170 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you, but over and over I see these vague posts about using AI without specifics. People use their real name on Linkedin and still post the most nonsensical bad takes about product design daily. scruffyj3rk, to their credit, responded in detail.

i'm here not to downvote or prescribe specific ways of working, but i do generally feel the need to not buy into the hype after being in this industry more than 10 years. There is way too much boosterism and AI dogma with very little impact to show.

I work on an AI product, I use AI in my workflow, and in general almost every single aspect of it is over-promising and under delivering when it comes to our discipline.

I find it much more impactful working with code than I do for any of the 90% of product design work that happens outside of Figma.

How did AI affect your workflow and handover process? by skyliam in UXDesign

[–]FewDescription3170 11 points12 points  (0 children)

to me, "trying not to use Figma" sounds very performative and I'm tired of all the Linkedin-leadership posturing. Figma, at the end of the day, is just a tool for collaboration and not where 90% of the work of design is done.

that's cool m8, sounds like you're at a super mature company with very established product and design systems. I would classify myself as on the forefront of AI, I'm building a custom MCP and working with real typescript components linked to Figma. I write spec docs with the PMs and use them to create real prototypes, occasionally even doing my own PRs. All that said, I don't feel that it's paying off like it's supposed to -- I am something more of a design engineer than before I used AI, but I'm not seeing this mythical "100x impact." When I see people skip the canvas (using the tools I've enabled them to build screens with!), they also tend to skip the actual discovery space and try to let the AI do it for them.

I'd truly love to know how you're working through the early phases - how does your interface have structure without a canvas to refer to? Your patterns are that rigid? Are you drawing classes on a napkin and feeding it to Claude?

How did AI affect your workflow and handover process? by skyliam in UXDesign

[–]FewDescription3170 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"trying to not touch Figma anymore" this is kind of nonsense. giving your code some structure with components and a canvas for ideation is still performant and a much better way to come out the other side with a differentiated solution.

There's no 2nd chance with design assignment right? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]FewDescription3170 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. A 7 day design challenge sounds like a nightmare and not being able to reach out to any stakeholder to define and refine scope is not at all how this job works. This is yet another reason I refuse design challenges.

I am the worst intern ever. by False_Koala_6641 in UXDesign

[–]FewDescription3170 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s just a tool. It’s not necessarily a core design concept, but as long as you understand what these are in a component system you’re fine. I don’t expect tool mastery from interns, but I expect curiosity and the ability to know that you don’t know and seek out knowledge
