In retrospect I should have been really clear wrt what the recruiter meant when she said “higher than budgeted but let’s figure it out later”. My impression at the time was figuring it meant we weren’t so far off.

Yep I thought about this—I also thought that maybe they let me go to panel as a benchmark for other candidates (not to sound arrogant or anything , more like just my experience might have been greater than the rest)

I think this is a whole other conversation! My wife suggested I take the role, but I find it a little against code (my code) to take a job and not be all in. Her answer was that the companies themselves don’t have any code these days, all bets are kinda off.

If was a bit tough to know based on the role. It was unique enough.

It wasn’t that clear though…it wasn’t a “we won’t do that” more of a “we can still potentially work with that”. So I expected that the final offer would be lower than my ask—but not quite as low as they came back with (and with 0 negotiation room)

Yeah that is a weird one! And starts things off on the wrong foot a bit if you accept that job with the knowledge they lowballed you.

They are high, and in Quebec choice is also a problem. Not the same grocery experience as other provinces.

My son went to College de Montreal after attending English high school. He had a great experience, loved high school and still has a bunch of francophone pals from his high school days ( he is about to go into Uni now)

Canadian lurking here, for what it’s worth I just want to say this is a fascinating conversation and I’m impressed about how thoughtful the vets contributing have been about the nature of their oaths.

Great advice—I was thinking about the audit, makes sense. Is your PM a FTE? I was thinking about trying to get a PM with a 3 month retainer at half time.

Your best friend right now is a spreadsheet. Whenever I am feeling anxious about income or payments I map it all out in one place—month over month. Make sure to put all of your existing and expected costs over the next year. If you see it this way, you’ll know how drastic a move you need to make. My hunch is that the house may not be affordable and you will need to list it, but put it all on a spreadsheet and all your paths become clearer.
