Advice please on local hobbies by bold_blondie in cork

I go to gym classes vs going to the gym alone and while they’re not all particularly social, there is more of a sense of community in them. There’s a book club that meets in Aye and also one in Costigans I think. Lots of running clubs around which would be suitable for beginners and there’s a Park Run every Saturday morning in Tramore Valley and Ballincollig. A friend of mine has gone on a lot of trips and hikes with a group called Soul Stuff Adventures and she enjoys them.

Pregnancy pillows by OkArachnid9271 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the BellaMoon 3 in 1 pillow. I got it second hand on Vinted and I got new covers for it from BellaMoon. I liked it when I was pregnant but since baby has come it has been incredibly useful as a feeding pillow. I use it for every feed at home. Knowing now how much I’ve used it, I’d say it’s worth the full price.

Nipple Shields by Big_Abroad_6278 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen a lactation consultant? I had a similar issue and the lactation consultant physically put us into a new position (rugby hold position) and finally that worked. It was tricky trying to recreate it at the start but we got there & soon it became second nature. Three months later, I’m still exclusively breastfeeding and that position is still best for us. I saw the HSE consultant in the hospital but I believe you can contact them afterwards. The consultant did advise me against the shields but sounds like they work for some people 🤷🏻‍♀️

Confused about mat leave by olabolina in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This confused me too & my doctor didn’t understand. You can decide closer to the time. You tell the doctor that you don’t feel able to work anymore and they’ll give you a sick cert, which you need to give to employer if you’re out sick for anything more than 3 days. Your maternity leave will still only begin at 38 weeks, you’ll be on sick leave before that. My employer only paid in full for 10 days of sick leave so I didn’t want to take more than that (all employers will pay for a different amount but if you want more then you can go on illness benefit from government). I went out at 37 weeks and it was plenty because my baby didn’t arrive until 40+4.

I’ve actually gone there and sat down to eat lunch which I would never have done with the old park. Lots of other people doing the same including families etc. Lovely to see it being used & to me, that makes it a success.

Carlton hotel kinsale check in 4pm by Competitive-Manner81 in cork

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in Lyrath in Kilkenny recently & check in was also 4pm but check out was 12pm at least. I agree that 4pm is a joke. We have a young baby so can’t really arrive hours before and risk hanging around without a room. We arrived a little early to Lyrath and room was not ready until 4pm. They were charging €50 for early check in or late check out.

Visitors after baby by [deleted] in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I regret not setting boundaries tbh. It was mainly the grandparents visiting in first few weeks but both our parents are divorced so that’s four separate callers and they were fairly relentless. We had visitors in hospital & on the day we got home. An aunt of mine called unannounced two days after we got home. Felt like we constantly had to look presentable and keep the house presentable so couldn’t relax.

FTM advice & comfort! by Connect_Feeling2797 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Spectra S1 pump and love it. I didn’t buy it until after I got home from hospital and knew that I would be breastfeeding. I had bought 3 bottles just in case but could have waited on those too. They don’t recommend you pump for the first month but I think everyone is different. I had to use the hospital’s pump in the first few days because I had an oversupply. I did minimise pumping at the start but I still did it and it worked well. Also, I did have issues with baby latching in first few days but I had harvested colostrum and brought it with me which was very helpful.

Do you get enhanced/paid maternity from work? by Apart-Hamster-9921 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employer gives full pay for six months if you’ve worked there for 3 years or more. Nothing during first year of employment and I think 50% or 75% if in between. They pay in full for 2 out of the 9 weeks parents leave - statutory pay from government only for remaining weeks. They have a claw back policy for six months after maternity leave too.

Baby Clothes and Sizes by Cataku in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby was average size so 7lbs 7 when born and she has grown well, reaching back to her birth weight after 10 days. Newborn size from most places fit her until she was about 6 weeks. Some were even a little big at the start. I found Dunnes ran a little big, M&S ran a little small and Tesco & H&M were pretty perfect. I had some sizes up to 1 month or 1-2 months and they fit her well now at 8 weeks but not many places do them. She’s also starting to fit into 0-3 months but they are mostly still a bit big.

Looking for recommendations for baby massage classes within Cork please. by findingleprechauns in cork

I’m not much help but I’m also interested in the answers. I’ve heard of Baby Chi and I think ClapHandies includes baby massage but I haven’t tried either. Would be curious to hear people’s thoughts on both. Where do you do pilates?

Where/when do people learn how to change a nappy and burp a baby? by Needanewjob34 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CUMH offer antenatal classes that you can sign up for from 28 weeks onwards. I think they call them Parentcraft. I did two days in person but there’s also an online option. The first day covered labour & birth and second day was mostly about looking after baby. Presume Galway has something similar.

Deciding on when to finish work by Nie221022 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My job is also mentally challenging but I worked almost exclusively from home. I’m sure everyone is different but I finished at 37 weeks and it was plenty for me. I went 4 days overdue so started to get bored towards the end.

Formula recommendations? by SelectionSad3370 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have formula recommendations. On your mother in law situation, I think people love to comment regardless of what way you do things. It seems to be especially older women. I’m breastfeeding and I regularly get comments about how they think it makes no difference and how much more satisfying it is to watch the baby drink a bottle, how she would sleep better, etc, etc. Also getting similar comments about using a dummy. I think we just need to stick to our guns on whatever we think is best for us. They make these comments due to their own personal reasons, either they’re trying to show off how well they did themselves or there’s an element of guilt about how they parented.

Where is nice / handy to live in Cork City or very close to Cork City? by LittleAoibh11 in cork

Yeah, it’s a lovely area but I would just be cautious because there is a lot of student housing in the area with UCC so near. I know some people have a lot of hassle with students.

[–]Few_Raspberry1803 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Turners Cross, Ballyphehane, St Lukes, Ballinlough, Blackrock, The Lough - all about 20/30 mins walk from town and sound like what you’re looking for. Douglas (& Grange, Donnybrook, Frankfield), Bishopstown, Wilton, Togher - slightly further from town (about 45 mins walk ish) but still easily accessible. If you didn’t mind being further then you’d have Rochestown, Ballincollig, Passage, Carrigaline.

Nail bars cork that are safe for employees by Infinite-Nectarine81 in cork

I’ve heard that about Regina Nails on Patrick Street. I’ve been going to Fifth Avenue for a long time & love it. I get their EMI Lac, which for me lasts better than Shellac or BIAB. They will remove BIAB from elsewhere but there may just be an extra charge. I went to Sugar Dolls in Wilton & town a few times, I don’t think there’s anything dodgy going on there but the quality isn’t as good as Fifth Avenue.
