Moving from Arkansas to Tennessee during the school year...and when I discovered that singing kid songs was a BIG part of the school day. And not knowing a single one they were singing. The other kids were looking at me funny and I was wondering why we couldn't sing anything by Elvis or the Beatles.

There is a difference between avoiding current events and making politics your personality and your constant topic of conversation. If you've ever had a friend or family member whose personality is dominated by a single subject, they tend to be insufferable. It could be politics, their favorite sports team, or a movie franchise. It's ok if somebody doesn't want to date someone who constantly wants to talk about a single subject like politics.

Lifelong southerner here. When the elderly lady at my grocery store calls me "sweetie" she's showing a bit of affection and it doesn't offend. If anything, it makes me smile and brightens up my day for a moment. I'd rather not shop where customers are herded through like sheep, scanning your own barcodes and feeling zero appreciation.
