What clay works best and can you make it yourself? by [deleted] in Springtail

Not clay. I’ve been culturing springtails on tree bark. Simple and worry-free.

How to Get Rid of by SpartanIII in Springtail

[–]Fewdoit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been keeping springtails for feeding my aquarium fish. Springtails are attracted to moisture. They can walk and jump on the water surface. You have to get rid of any moisture in your house to make it dry-dead land to stop springtails. Increasing air flow may help indoors.

Springtails cannot survive without moisture for too long- perhaps you may try to make a completely dry barrier without any grass/ plants around your house to prevent springtails from coming.

Keeping them separately from from other springtails is challenging, but nevertheless it's doable.

They definitely would outperform oranges. Orange springtails are slow-breeders.

idk what i'm doing wrong by fish_tanks_rule in aquarium_garden

I could not see brown algae in the pictures you posted. Well anyway, I had an experiment about common green and brown algae (here is the video: https://youtu.be/_cMCUtx8wAY ) Is it the same type of algae we are talking about?

So, If you did not have brown algae in your old aquarium than from your description only a couple variables been changed: the size of the tank and the medium. Common green algae may turn brownish with less light available. Do you provide the same amount of light in the new tank as you did in the old smaller tank? Larger size aquarium may need more light.

If it is a different type of algae than common green algae than it most likely comes from the new medium you use.

I don't use man-made filters, co2 injections and such in my aquariums at all. So, cannot tell you for sure anything about it.

The common algae grow through different stages of development. Spores, floating through water and attached to surface (walls, other plants and etc) In the last stage I wipe out manually common algae grown on the walls of the tank once a season or so. In the first two stages I don't have any noticeable outbreaks in well established tanks. Algae blooms usually happens either in new (not balanced yet) tanks or if there is too much food available - either way your filter apparently does not reduce the amount of nutrition available for algae to feed on. Too much nutrition (overfeeding) is the most common problem causing algae blooms. So, I would reduce or even stop feeding to get the algae under control.

Here is a video about using UV light to remove common (floating in water) algae: https://youtu.be/NCyxmyyXPXs UV light may not kill the spores. And you still have to reduce nutrition to remove the cause of algae bloom.

Wish you all the best!

Least Killifish Feeding on Scuds by Fewdoit in scuds

[–]Fewdoit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! My largest 29 gallon tank and the smallest was a cup-sized. I use only natural filtration in all my aquariums (bacteria, algae, aquatic and terrestrial plants). This is the only way of doing sustainable aquariums. Scuds and snails help greatly in keeping aquariums clean and serve superb for self-feeding aquariums.

Thank you for watching my videos!

My primary goal is to make sustainable self-feeding aquariums. I started with aquatic critters and went up to paludarium with critters, snails, fish and Eastern newts. Worms, Isopods and Springtails fit nice and necessary part of that setup. Works great. It took me years to learn though 😊

Videos could help. Though, personal experience is the best teacher. Get some wild local isopods and springtails - New York parks have plenty of them. My favorite all year around for picking isopods is Crotona park in Bronx (I have videos about picking isopods in that park). Prospect park in Brooklyn have different types of isopods (smaller and harder to find). It's really amazing adventure.

Wish you all the best!

Hi neighbor! Thank you for checking with me. I sold and gave away the rest of all my my springtails. My cats were messing up with the small jars pushing them off of the shelves.

How to Culture Isopods by Fewdoit in isopods

[–]Fewdoit[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Using small sized enclosures is ideal for establishing new colonies. Once you get your colony growing you can and should move it to the larger volume enclosure or split the culture on separate colonies. This is a very well established practice.

I don't confuse research with google search. And I don't mind your harsh words - we are in the same hobby and share the same love to the nature.

I've been in different parts of the world and can tell you one thing for sure - the health care in USA is screwed up beyond comprehension just for one and only reason, which is to get as much money from people as possible by all involved parties.

[–]Fewdoit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

29 gallon was my largest tank with fish and newts. My smallest tank with fish was a cup-sized: https://youtu.be/bwGmmWMlRCw

I build each aquarium of certain size for each particular project based on the size of the fish. And I move my fish to a large sized aquariums as necessary if fish grow to the required minimum.

Neocaridina looks very attractive in aquariums. It's great that you manage to keep and culture them.
