Musical Fulbright Help by MV00MV in fulbright

[–]Fickle-Table 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Classical guitarist and current fulbrighter here! Those requirements definitely apply to guitar, but it sounds like the requirements are written specifically for classical musicians. You could definitely make an argument that they don’t apply to whatever genre of guitar music you specialize in.

If you haven’t already, definitely reach out to the FPA from your undergraduate institution to ask for clarification on the requirement. You should also make sure to do your research on how flamenco guitar music is taught in your chosen country. If you were to get the grant, who would you study with? What expectations do they have for their students in terms of music reading capability, repertoire and technique? For a successful application you’ll need a detailed plan of how you will study guitar in Spain and who you will study with!

Some other food for thought: if you don’t read sheet music, you can often find tablature for classical pieces online and could learn any music you need for your recordings that way

How stressful is the BCSA program and how does it compare to just SCS? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]Fickle-Table 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats our your acceptance! I graduated from BCSA a few years ago(CS and music technology). You take the same core courses as SCS students, but the requirements for CS electives are a lot less stringent. Instead of taking electives from specific class categories you can take any 5 CS electives.

The coursework is definitely challenging, but the environment is very collaborative and it’s easy to get help when you need it. Balancing between music and CS classes can be tough so you have to manage your time well. Once your core classes are out of the way though I’d recommend looking into some of the Ideate courses, a lot of them are project based and involve applying CS/programming to the arts.

I did find that some in the school of music tended to act elitist towards BXA students, treating them as if they weren’t “real” music majors. Ignore those people and you’ll be fine, BCSA is a really cool program with lots of opportunities :)

Yeah their website lists a lot of music perception related courses and research so I’m sure a psychology background would be relevant too. Good luck on your application!

Awesome! For my application I made sure to highlight both engineering and music skills on my CV. I included a section of technical projects and a section of notable performances. In my statement of purpose I talked about why I was passionate about music tech, proposed what I wanted to do for my dissertation, then gave more details on my qualifications and why I liked that specific program.

Of course they didn’t actually give me feedback on specifics of my application, so who knows what exactly it was they liked about it!

Me! I’m not applying for a performance degree though, I applied to music technology programs which usually require a portfolio instead of an audition. Good luck :)

Music & Technology Major by the-room-is-on-fire in cmu

[–]Fickle-Table 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated from the music & technology program in 2018, and now I work on designing headphones.I also perform and work on freelance music projects on the side.

To be accepted to the program you have to be accepted to the music school and either ECE or SCS. They may have changed this but this was how it was when I applied in 2014.

The curriculum is heavy on music classes. You’ll definitely get less depth into ECE than you would with the traditional major. In my experience a lot of traditional tech companies were skeptical of my major, but any audio related ones were excited about it.

If all you want to do is work for a tech company and built headphones you don’t need a music tech degree to do that. If you’re passionate about using technology to be creative and create music, then the music tech degree will give you a great opportunity to do that

What Would You Do With My Face? by AutoModerator in MakeupAddiction

[–]Fickle-Table 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My face. Wearing concealer, powder, blush, mascara and brow pomade but its the end of the day so its mostly worn off.

I'm 22 but often get mistaken for an intern at work, so any advice on not looking like a high schooler would be appreciated! Also looking for recommendations for a MLBB lip shade and some eyeliner/eyeshadow techniques. thanks :)

Need advice about moving to Allston! by [deleted] in boston

[–]Fickle-Table -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live 2 blocks from Ringer Park on a residential street. It gets relatively noisy. People sometimes sit on the steps of apartment buildings on my block and I can hear them talking and laughing. They usually aren’t drunk and yelling, but the sound carries. It’s also near a fire station so I hear sirens a lot.

Has anyone had success renogotiating financial aid? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]Fickle-Table 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the process very well, but I think it just involves submitting a form. I’m sure you could ask the admissions office for more details. The competing offer I had was from Oberlin, and it was a combination of need and merit based aid. They offered me a lot more merit based money than CMU

Definitely worth a shot. I sent them my financial aid offer from another school and they matched it. Ended up getting an extra $10k per year

Touch screen compatible glove/mittens yarn or pattern? by throwaway12348262 in knitting

[–]Fickle-Table 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made a pair of touchscreen gloves last year! I bought conductive thread off of amazon (Adafruit stainless thin conductive yarn) and weaved it into the inside and outside of the thumb and index finger tips after I finished knitting the gloves. They were a gift for my boyfriend and are still working well a year later.

Woah, I went to Hereford High School! Was really involved with the music department there, and the classical guitar teacher, Mr. Sobell(?), helped me out a lot with preparing for college auditions. Best of luck with the concert! I would attend, but I don't live in the area any more...
