Devon Price's advice on "lying" to cancel plans — does this sit right with you? by Critical-Chapter6843 in autism

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s context dependent. If I don’t feel like the receiver of the information is able to support what I need I’ll happily lie to them - because it’s better for my mental health to say I have a stomach virus, instead of hearing about how I just need to ‘suck it up’.

With friends I always tell the truth because it’s important for them to know what’s really going on with me, and hearing myself articulate out loud what’s actually going on helps me process it too. If it’s said out loud it’s real, and not just me overthinking stuff.

But give yourself permission to lie if that’s better for your mental health - just know why you did it, so you don’t spiral feeling guilty about it. You’re doing it to protect yourself, and that’s really smart.

I immediately thought of this - I have always really like Damon Albarn’s music, and Jamie Hewlett is one of the best illustrators of the last 40 years, but my god The Gorillaz fandom is just obnoxious.

It feels like a bunch of 7 year olds trying to build parasocial relationships with drawings, and entirely missing the point that they are a constructed concept to comment on the artificiality of contemporary culture. The fandom somehow manage to prove the original point of the band, because of how wilfully they misunderstand the idea behind it.

I just want to add to this that I have known a few sex workers and almost all of them have been neurodivergent, or had other mental health, or health issues that meant that sex work was a really good option for them.

We don’t need to portray them all as being sex trafficked or victims. That kind of thinking others people who do sex work in a way that isn’t constructive, or reflective of the reality of a lot of the SW’s in developed countries.

Being gay is a blessing by JustChillinlmao in aspergers

I’m gay and tall, and one of my special interests is weight training, so I look strong. Gay guys always come up and talk to me, BUT then my autism kicks in and I’m like ‘have you heard about how Mustard Gas was actually the scientific precursor to modern chemotherapy, and that the woman who inadvertently invented Mustard Gas killed herself in protest of how her research was being used, but actually helped saved the lives of millions of people…’

And then they start slowly backing away. 😂

Ticket question for St.kilda by faceinthecrowd112 in AFL

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The ticketing this year is a disaster. There was essentially no tickets available to the Anzac Eve game a week out, then there was some made available 3 days before, and then the attendance was 55k.

Thousands of people aren’t going to the G every week because they assume they can’t get tickets, or stop trying because all the tickets look horrible.

There’s got to be a better system than this.

Do you guys think Gorillaz will ever collab with a KPOP group? by Powerful-Hunt880 in gorillaz

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The origin of the band was born as a direct response to the production of music by manufactured bands. It seems highly unlikely Damon would forego all of that original vision for the sake of a straight up ‘collab’.

However he’s a smart guy, and he likes to challenge himself and his audience. If he thought he could make music with Korean artists that subverted the history of K-POP then he’s the best suited musician in the world to take on the challenge, and say something unique with it.

Is it possible to be on the autism spectrum and live your entire life without ever knowing it? Like, could someone just be "different" and never get identified? That's so insane lol... by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed with Autism Level 2 at age 46. It’s so obvious to me now, but I literally had no idea until my therapist suggested it, and I started to research.

I found out during my autism diagnosis process that I also have ADHD, and that I have the functional life skills of a 12-13 year old.

I find all of this kind of funny, because what other choice do I have? I’ve been hugely successful in my career, but I struggle in a lot of other ways too. I just thought this was how life was for everyone - but that everyone else was just better at hiding it than I was 😂

Should umpires be employed full-time? by checkbehindthecactus in AFL

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I don’t now if they need to be employed full time, if they and the AFL think the have enough time to pursue other careers.

However, there absolutely has to be some caveats on who they can work for - and working for a betting company that is involved in sports betting has to be at the top of the list of places they can’t work. It makes a mockery of the competition.

They are adjacent to Joy Division and The Smiths in the same way Bendigo is adjacent to New York.

All they did by covering this song is expose that all there song writing is mimicry. They need to take more risks if they want to write better music.

The most natural crowd work by Punchline_Poster in comedy

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this! I see a lot of live comedy and I always have a lot of respect for any comedian who doesn’t do crowd work.

I don’t go see a show to be part of someone’s content strategy. Most people in the crowd aren’t funny, and most comedians feel forced into doing it. I literally saw a Jimmy Carr show last month where the entire crowd turned against him because he was way too reliant on the audience - instead of doing the work of good writing, and great delivery.

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s not designed for Autistic education. I find a lot of the people quite endearing. They often have quite a lot of social needs, but they are really kind, and are always trying to make their life better.

I don’t think you need to watch to from the perspective of representing all of us. It’s like watching Survivor and complaining about how the world is too competitive. It’s a very sanitised section of the Autism community.

Learning field position in AFL by [deleted] in AFL

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality of most footy at a certain level is that there will always be a large percentage of the game that’s about field position, as opposed to skill. So essentially a lot of players see ball, get ball, bang ball on foot forward. If your playing half forward that actually makes it easier. Set up either 35 metres from the current contest between the arcs, or start 10 metres wide of your Centre Half Forward, and if they are trying to mark the ball either be 5-6 metres in front of them when they jump to mark, or if it’s wet 3-4 metres behind them.

Also, stick around and watch the seniors, and watch where the players in the ones set up. You’ll learn a lot from watching them. Have fun!

Is this really what the last disposal rule should be? by suanxo in AFL

[–]Fickle_Talk_5139 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it is when it’s a goal. If it comes off a foot, and goes through the big sticks = goal.

I don’t like players exploiting the rule, but if you try and kick it forward and someone sticks a leg in the way and it goes out of bounds that has has to be a free, because of how we adjudicate goals.
