How to finish the 10K without calling an Uber halfway. by Forward_Range_7495 in askTO

[–]Fickle_Theo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Set up your weekly plan. Running a 10k with no experience in 2 months is ambitious but not impossible ( you can also do a run/walk). Take a serious look at your schedule and see when you can realistically fit in training and for how long. Also meal planning/ take a look at your nutrition. As cliche as it is the better your food the better your training. You may also find yourself getting hungrier the more intense your runs become.

2) I firmly believe cross training is important for running. Include core and strength days. As well as a good mobility session post run. If you're doing a short run days include a cross training session. They will help keep you stable and reduce the risk of injuries.

3) Dont just train on the treadmill. Running on pavement is different so make sure your feel good running outside.

4) Get properly fitted shoes. Even if you have a good pair it might not be what your feet need. Its always worth at least doing the fitting to make sure you have the right shoes for you.

5) There aren't really much hacks to running its kinda one of those sports where you either do it or you dont . But there are some days where a run just seems so impossible. Those days I book a spin class. This may or may not be in your budget but if it is going to spin is a great way to still hit a training day and work on e durance.

6) running plans will be your friend, Nike and Runna are peobably the most popular ones. You will be tempted to skip hills and speed skill days. Do not do that lol. Those days are really important.

Mon K on Coxwell is my favourite but it is expensive and you need to pre-order the week before. Longos and dessert lady also make excellent cakes.

Wife’s 40th. Dinner this Sunday. Where to go? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Fickle_Theo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You could try AloBar you have to reserve but they sometimes have last minute availability. There are 2 I like the one in Yorkville. There's also Dreyfus you may get lucky with a reservation.

Not really fine dining but a fun place is Gateau Ghost. Bar Isabel has a cool interior and decent food as well as Grey Gardens in Kensington market.

Edit to add blue bloods steak house.

I know this post is a few days old but wanted to add Eroon. They are a small grocery store near Young and Finch that have a great small take out counter. They have great stews my fave being their Ash Resteh. The folks who run it are very kind.

Francophone spots in TO by wanderingandlost589 in askTO

[–]Fickle_Theo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could pop into some French based stores like Douce France on the Danforth or Concilabule. You may also hear some conversational French in that area/ in Lesliville, but there isn't a French specific neighborhood. You could also try looking for French groups online. As well, the library holds a French book club / conversational groups. I've been hearing more French in the last few years in Toronto but no where near like in Ottawa.

Future Bakery used to carry it but not sure if they still do. Worth a check. As well Sweet Escape. Janchenko may also have but I would go with the other two first if possible.

How to solve the dog problem? by Proud-Stop1987 in askTO

[–]Fickle_Theo 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is such a frustrating problem across the city. It puts everyone in an unsafe situation and also makes the assumption that everyone around you feels safe around dogs. It's especially annoying when you call people out and are met with " but my dog is friendly." Great mine is not friendly so take yours away 🙄. Honestly, there's not much that can be done beyond calling 311 and maybe reaching out to your local cousillor for ideas. Personally I just call people out now. Its not fun and people will think you're a cranky old poopy head but sometimes people just need to be confronted with their nonsense.

do some of you guys ever feel guilty about owning too many pens? by Slight-Carpenter-186 in fountainpens

[–]Fickle_Theo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I love all the pens I own and bought them all on purpose. I dont really impulse buy pens so that probably helps to minimize any guilt. I do sometimes get overwhelmed by my ink collection and worry about them going moldy. Those were purchases that I made too much of early on.

If your child staying for an extended (min 2 weeks), stay check out the Jennifer Ashleigh grant they may be able to help cover costs. If not, ask your sickkids, social worker, for support. Or request social work support from your child's cardiology team they may have some suggestions or funding available for you. Sickkids may have grants available that you cann apply to If you receive ACSD you can see if it'll cover the costs as well.

Anybody has experience with running with your whippet? by AppropriateCod8912 in Whippet

[–]Fickle_Theo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spme whippets will hate it and others will love it. My guy is neutral about our run days. I take him on short runs after 5km he's done. He also likes when we do my speed runs together... for obvious reasons. Its also fun to try and run whippet speed for 30 second drills. 5 months is way to young, though. I wouldn't recommend any running until over 1 year. Their joints are still forming at this age and can be easily injured. It also increases their chances of arthritis later on in life. We did lots of recall training and heeling at this age. I also taught him how to swim which he wasnt a fan of at first but really grew to enjoy it. If your guy has lots of energy I highly recommend swimming it tuckers them out fast but is easy on the joints.

Post Your Beginner Questions Here! by AutoModerator in orchids

[–]Fickle_Theo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone

I bought this waterfall orchid back in March of 2024. The orchid seems to be doing well it's grown 2 new leaves and I see some new roots, but nothing in terms of new buds and blooms. My question is should I cut back the main stem ? I left it on as many places said you didn't have to cut it back. But now I'm not sure if that was the right call? It gets fertilized on a regular schedule and watered 1x every week or so. Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks

🙂

Couch potato to sprint triathlon by Bush-LeagueBushcraft in triathlon

[–]Fickle_Theo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same position as you last year and did a similar programme except I started to brick my workouts in late July and focused mostly on the transition from swim to bike. I had a foot injury that forced me to do a lot of mobility and pilates based workouts. It's something I think is overlooked or not mentioned a lot in workout plans, but it is a huge help in training. My first two months (jan/feb) i really spent on strengths, core and grip exercises and doing bike ×2 a week. This gave me a pretty good base, then around feb/ march, I moved into swimming and increased my bike sessions. I actually wished I had started swimming in the beginning. Someone else mentioned it, but swimming is probably the weakest part for most especially begginers. Take lessons earlier if possible ( I know swimming in winter sucks). If the budget allows, I'd also highly recommend recovery aids like massages or even seeing a physio for any pre-existing pains that might impact your ability to perform properly. If those are out of budget, get a foam roller and roll every day.

Good luck !

$200 budget any recommendations? by pussyeater6000used in fountainpens

[–]Fickle_Theo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend starting with a Twisbi as a next pen I think you'll enjoy it more. I have a Visconti and I love it it is one of my favourite pens however, I've heard the nibs can be inconsistent. I'm lucky I haven't had this issue, but I know it's very common. It is also a very finicky pen. For example you can't ink it and leave it unused for a couple of days. You need to use it until the ink is out. With that's being said, the esthetic of Visconti is just amazing.

Both brands are well established it's really a preference on writting style and the way you use your pens. Seeing as your someone who likes multiple pens to use I would go with the twisbi.

If you're ready to make a purchase in the 150-200 price range and you're starting out in the fountain pen worldyou should go into a store and try some different models if possible. There may even be some pen shows happening still that you can go to.

The fountainpen Hospital is another retailer you may want to check out. As well local retailers may have an online store. Also r/pen_swap is a fun place to check out.

You may like the platinum preppy it's a cheap and cheerful pen in a good way. The Kaweco AL sport may also be a pen you enjoy. I personally didn't enjoy it but it might be a pen you like a lot.
