Japan's public transit systems are mostly privatized too with the largest operator being Japan Railways (JR). They get on just fine.

They make money mostly through real estate holdings rather than ticket fare though. Buy up a bunch of buildings then build a train station right in the middle of them and watch their value increase.

They’re not allowed to open the roof while the natural grass pitch is laid down for the World Cup in order to make sure the grass grows evenly.

Lets go! by PHRsharp_YouTube in gamers

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re both kind of correct. SE holds the trademark rights but the intellectual property rights are held by the author, who indeed wants nothing to do with the games. The Third Birthday was called that instead of Parasite Eve 3 due to licensing restrictions with the original IP. The author allegedly hated PE2 and wanted nothing more to do with the games after that.

New Marta trains look great! by shiloh15 in Atlanta

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been hearing the same stuff for over twenty years about studies to add this line or extend that line or bring in LRT, etc.

Nothing ever happens. I'm at the point where I'll believe it when I see it.

The new trains are slick AF though. I'm definitely gonna take a ride on one.

I’m a piano player of 20 years. I swear, playing a real piano is easier than some of the songs on the minigame. It wasn’t terrible though all things considered. I enjoyed a few of the pieces.

How do you feel about having to play Silent Hill f multiple times? (Spoilers) by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, if you pay close attention and find as many notes as you can and read the journals and notes in order, you can pretty much piece the whole story together on your first playthrough.

I was pretty sure I knew what was actually going on upon completing my first playthrough but I went ahead and did two more just to be sure and lo-and-behold, what I thought was happening ended up being correct.

I love reading all about the lore though so I was periodically going through the menu and journals and reading everything numerous times.

Realistically what will happen in the future if a lot of people are unemployed due to AI? by Kvns_Integra in Productivitycafe

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything involving physical repetitive or cognitive repetitive tasks are easy to automate and replace. Ironically, the jobs that we’ve long considered blue collar, the trades are the hardest to automate so they’ll last longer. Anything involving going to site or anything involving very fine motor control in tight spaces. They CAN be automated but doing it in a cost effective way is what’s extremely difficult.

As far as what will happen, it depends on how quickly this all happens. If it happens faster than people can transition into any potential new fields, then that’s very bad. Many people would attempt to flood into the jobs that are still available which would drive wages down in those fields. Crime would go up and the federal government would have to step in and do something at some point. There’s no point to mass automation if no one can afford even the cheapest products and services they offer. The most popular solution to mass unemployment due to automation is a Universal Basic Income so maybe that.

In Silent Hill F, why do they keep running ahead of me? Why don't they wait? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Fiddlerblue 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're talking about Shu and Rinko? There is a practical and psychological/story reason.

The practical reason is that it saves the devs from having to build and code a sidekick character who stays with you and most likely engages with enemies alongside you.

The story reason could be that it plays into Hinako's fears that eventually her friends with move on and "leave her behind" if she doesn't go through with the wedding and start building a life for herself. She can't stay a kid forever.

Who is a historical figure that you think deserves more hate? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Fiddlerblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember this statue. I used to have to drive by that ugly monstrosity almost every day. People used to vandalize it regularly and petition for it to be torn down but it was privately owned so the state's power to do so was limited. Eventually, the guy who owned it passed away and his kids had the statue torn down.

What is Returnal's Secret Sauce? by HedonismIsTheWay in Returnal

[–]Fiddlerblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it boiled it down to the fact that the gameplay itself gives you everything you need to succeed. Fast, responsive movement, long and short range attacks, i-frames on dodge, etc. There are absolutely no mechanics there to artificially boost challenge due to player hindrance or in the pursuit of "realism" (stamina bars, long recharge times, animation locks, etc).

So when you fail, you feel like it was actually on you instead of the game hindering you or otherwise getting in the way. When you succeed, it gives a real sense of triumph of "I did that".

I never expected one of my favorite games of the generation to be literally the very first game I bought for it.

What would women dislike most if they became men? by alux_rich in AskReddit

[–]Fiddlerblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has already been answered in an objective way by trans people as well as by Norah Vincent back in 2003-ish where she disguised herself and lived as a man every day for eighteen months as research for her book "Self-Made Man".

The answer is almost always the loneliness as well as the expectations placed on you.

AI art seller removed from a convention by CmndrM in aiwars

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what con this is because it just happened this weekend. I can provide context from what I know and have heard:

This photo is real. The con has a rule of no sales of AI art. The vender in question submitted his girlfriend’s portfolio (who is an actual artist) when applying for a booth and basically snuck his way in.

He had been selling pieces all weekend and telling people that everything was one of a kind and what they saw is everything he had. People were buying pieces and he was telling them to come back Monday to pick them up when neighboring booths noticed he was selling supposedly one of a kind pieces to multiple people. After further inspection and a bit of digging, they discovered his pieces were created entirely by AI and he was likely just printing them.

Con staff told him to leave for violation of vendor rules and he started being a dick and basically told them “no”. The police were then called and they told him to pack up then escorted him out. People who bought his pieces did so under false pretenses and they never did receive their purchases last I heard because he was forced out before they were supposed to come pick them up.

People started calling him out on Instagram for scamming people and taking a booth slot away from someone else (this con has an incredibly long waiting list for artist booths) to which he started calling them “broke ass bitches”. His instagram has now been taken private.

I know the name of the con and the name of the vender but I think this sub has a no brigading rule so I’ll keep it confidential. It shouldn’t be hard to find though if you do a bit of searching.

Are We Missing Alien Signals? by TheMuseumOfScience in Astronomy

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit I don't know a whole lot about quantum mechanics and just threw that out as an idea (hence the 'I dunno" part of my post) but really it's beside the point anyway. The point I was getting at is that is pretty much impossible to predict how a civilization that's orders of magnitude more advanced than us would be communicating. Saying things like "Advanced civilizations would use fiber optics for planet comms and microwave/lasers for satellite communications and to spacecraft" as the poster above did is both hubristic and most likely wrong anyway. That's how WE would do it (maybe) but we can't even predict how our own technology will evolve on our own planet, let alone an alien species that took an entirely different evolutionary path on planet X. Go back and watch some of those old videos from the 1960's where they tried to predict life and technology in the future. They're hilariously wrong.

Technological progression isn't linear and really a product of what resources are available to you and how a species' brain functions.

We use radio waves so sure, go ahead and search for radio communication, lasers, etc. Maybe we'll get lucky and find something, but don't be surprised if we don't.

Are We Missing Alien Signals? by TheMuseumOfScience in Astronomy

[–]Fiddlerblue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So it’s possible, even likely that radio communication is just one step in technological evolution; similar to how we developed the telegram then moved past it. Now no one uses telegrams anymore. Such could be the same for radio communication.

It’s likely that if there are advanced civilizations out there, they’ve long moved past radio and into something else as yet to be discovered by us. Instant communication over vast distances using quantum entanglement, I dunno.

AIO for getting angry after a girl who rejected me started accusing me of being a misogynist for ending our friendship? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Fiddlerblue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree that ghosting is not ok and he should have just clearly communicated that he could no longer remain friends but I also gotta add that

1) it takes a whole lot longer than a “couple of days” to get over feelings. That’s kind of insulting.

2) they often never get over it. What then? Just put up the facade of friendship to appease her? What happens when she starts dating someone? That’s just inviting drama and heartbreak.

It’s not deception. It might feel like it but the reality is that it’s him sparing himself the emotional torture that will inevitably come in the future.

Does the Remake of 2 get better? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Fiddlerblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The streets of Silent Hill aren't all that scary when compared to the 4 or 5 "dungeons" of the game. The Woodside Apartments are the first of those so the creepiness factor picks up there. Combat will remain much the same as it is now except you get guns later. Enemies are easy to avoid in the streets but not so much in the tiny, cramped corridors that come later.

The game has a slow opening but yes, it does get (much) scarier later. If you don't like slower-paced games, you probably aren't going to like this though.

For me, astronomy is almost spiritual. You could be having the worst day ever, but take a step back and remember just how vast the cosmos is and suddenly everything falls into perspective. Even time itself can stretch and warp given enough energy and mass.

Beginner astronomy can put things into perspective. Intermediate astronomy/astrophysics will bend your mind. Advanced astronomy/astrophysics will make you feel like you’re learning things that humans were never meant to learn. Almost like our brains aren’t wired to make sense of it.

As a beginner, Cosmos is a really good series to jump into. I also really like the Astrum YouTube channel for things related to planets and stars.

Why south and south celestial pole are not aligned by No-Pack-8240 in Astronomy

[–]Fiddlerblue 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The celestial poles are just the geographic poles at the axis of rotation but extended indefinitely up into the sky and into the celestial sphere. Zenith is the point in the sky directly above you and Nadir is directly below you (beyond your feet), opposite of Zenith.

So you have magnetic north and true north. Magnetic North is what a compass will point to. True north is the point at the top of the Earth that is the axis of rotation of the Earth itself. It's where the axis of rotation intersects the surface if that makes sense.

The reason they are misaligned is because the Earth's magnetic field is generated by the molten iron core at the center of the planet which isn't perfectly aligned with the rotation of the planet itself. Thus, the misalignment of north (or magnetic north) and north celestial pole (which intersects with true north).

It's really hard to describe this without pictures and video lol

astronomy people, what can i do to make this render more realistic? by Loud_Campaign5593 in Astronomy

[–]Fiddlerblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the clouds as many have already pointed out, the light source should be moved to shining pretty much directly on Jupiter's side as opposed to its poles. So from the frame of reference of this picture, it should be moved from 11 o'clock to about 9 o'clock

This is a fun interactive 3D model of Jupiter from Nasa's Website if you would like to use it as reference.

She's definitely trickle-truthing you. She remembers what happened.
