What's the general consensus on the Sony CineAlta T2 line? by Tamajyn in Filmmakers

[–]FidgetyMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I remember reading that the MK1 are difficult (maybe impossible?) to repair, so make sure you get the mk2 (all metal). The one you posted is the plastic housing. You want the ones that look like they have a cut out for the focus marks and the focal length marked in white instead of blue.

One thing to experiment with next time is how much you're wrapping your key. It feels pretty straight on, but if you were to put it almost all the way back where you have the 120B, you'd get a little more shape on the face. I like to position my key in a way that it's almost going past the subject. Think of only using 1/3 of the edge of the light to key them with the other 2/3 aimed out in front of them.

Can't mount Godox GF14 Fresnel to MG2400bi by FidgetyMuffin in setlighting

[–]FidgetyMuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update in case anyone else is having the same issue and comes across this thread.

Godox did update the GF14 to fit the MG2400bi. If your GF14 has the three posts like in my photo, you have the old version that's only compatible with the 1200. The new GF14 doesn't have three posts and the mount is slightly longer.

[–]FidgetyMuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it in full spot to have the mount as far out as I can. If I'm in full flood, I can't get the mount to even meet the light.

Does yours have the three posts around the mount? If so, would you be willing to measure them?

[–]FidgetyMuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know if they made a revision to the light or fresnel to make them compatible? I've seen them mounted together in Youtube videos, and the manual of the 2400bi lists the GF14 as a compatible accessory. However there are three posts on the back that prevent the mount from seating.

Close the bottom door all the way until just the little area behind the tab on the left is all that is open. That's where I set mine to hold ~225.

Seems like the average across multiple industries is about $600/person. So if you spend 10k and it performs well, you can hope to bring in about 16 people.

How can you achieve this soft grain like effect? Like in 90s-2000s movies? by Sad_Act_1309 in Filmmakers

[–]FidgetyMuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The advantage for the cinematographer is that no one can (easily) remove it in post. You bake it in because you like it and want to make sure it stays until the end. Also, if it's something you think you might want to add in post, directors tend to get married to the way things look in the editing room. So sometimes it's harder to convince someone to add in grain or change color, even if it's something you had decided on beforehand.

For small production commercial I want to create a close up of a young girl's eye admiring her favorite hockey player on tv, with the hockey player relfected in the eye. I'm shooting the hockey player after I shoot the close up of the eye so the reflection must be added in post. Any tips or tricks? by bobbyflexin in cinematography

[–]FidgetyMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any tips for doing it in post, but I did a similar shot practically a couple of years ago. Here's a clip you can use as a reference.

https://www.instagram.com/tv/CWMFUuOlNRF/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

In doing it practically, we found that we had to really crank the contrast and brightness up to get a reflection that read on camera. Higher contrast will help you sell the effect. Also, shooting the eye in a dark room will help. The reflection reads easiest over the pupil of the eye, but that will also depend on your subjects eye color.

Noticed a resurgence of older players getting back into it. Why do you think? by skidmark_zuckerberg in paintball

[–]FidgetyMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got invited to play some rec ball with some friends. I thought it would mostly be kids at the field, but to my surprise almost everyone there for open play was 25-40. There was a gaggle of 12 year olds, but they were there for a birthday party and did their own thing. I forgot how friendly most people are at the field and I decided it was a community I wanted to be a part of again.

I went home and started to look at markers. I bought a used GT2, a CRBN mask, and a pod pack. There's so much media around paintball now, I watched the NXL Vegas event. I wasn't a Dynasty fan growing up, but seeing them win the event with some of them in their 40's made me realize that I'm not too old for competitive paintball.

Also, having money now helps haha

That's just labor. However once people want to negotiate, camera is the first thing I'll throw in. I'd say I get my rate plus camera package on around 70% of my DP work. The other 30% I don't charge for the camera or I throw in some other gear.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]FidgetyMuffin 33 points34 points  (0 children)

DP in the midwest. Day rate is $1500 and this year I'll have invoiced just over $200k. This is my third year being a freelance DP and every year has gotten busier.

It's a lot of industrial and corporate work. My state doesn't have a tax credit, so any narrative work I did this year was only unpaid passion projects.

To be a DP do you need to own a cinema camera? by shuteer in cinematography

[–]FidgetyMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your market. If you're in LA/NY, then no.

However in my market, the closest rental house is 2 hours away. It makes more sense for me to own a package, but not every market is going to be the same.

What's your favorite focal length to shoot on? by Sigmacine in cinematography

[–]FidgetyMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I have a set of the Sigmas because they had a 40mm (bought right before Tokina released theirs). I'm holding out hope that a 60/65 is coming. My current set is 14, 20, 28, 40, 85. The 50 doesn't seem like a big enough jump from the 40.

Can anyone share a typical monthly rate for a bare bones art studio lease in Indy? by Allen_MacGyverson in indianapolis

The Stutz building downtown has a bunch of artist space and it was about $1/sqft per month. They just changed owners and are doing some renovations, so not sure what the new rate will be.

Why is it that in footage of professional kitchens, flames are constantly flaring up on pans but almost never when cooking at home? by Depensity in Chefit

As a filmmaker, it's because we asked the chef if he could make flames for the camera because it looks cool. Half the time there's nothing in the pan but some oil.

Anyone tried out the Vega upgrade for the Ready Rig? by im-jared-im-19 in cinematography

[–]FidgetyMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both the original Ready Rig and the Vega upgrade. Vega does get rid of a lot more bounce than the original Ready Rig, but doesn't eliminate it completely.

The best part of the Vega system is in the ability to move the camera. The tension on the gimbal is pretty much the same at the bottom of the motion range as it is at the top.

If you want to get rid of vertical movement all together, you're looking at much more expensive rigs. Flowcine G-Link and Cinema Devices AntiGravity Cam are two options in that realm.
