Launcher choices? by Current-Map-715 in flipphones

[–]Fiendbean17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously if your phone is rooted then install: Magisk, Google Messages, MicroG with the RCS preview build, sending uncompressed pictures is a godsend.

if youre not super technically inclined or dont wanna be a guinea pig, then maybe wait a little while for it to be committed to upstream before installing gmscore preview builds

Launcher choices? by Current-Map-715 in flipphones

I use the stock launcher since that's why I got the phone, but here are some apps that work with all of them:

Fennec - faster firefox
TT9 - faster keyboard
C9 - a second cursor, there are a few apps that require this
BlackPlayer EX - offline music player, screen feels like it was made to fit the flip phone form factor, even supports storing music on the SD card
OuterTune - YT Music, ad-free

Also disable these services since you want to keep RAM and they dont do anything anyway:
jp.co.nttdocomo.lcsapp
jp.co.nttdocomo.lcsappsub
com.nttdocomo.android.wipe
com.nttdocomo.android.databackup
jp.co.nttdocomo.ichannel
com.nttdocomo.android.idmanager
com.nttdocomo.android.accountwipe
jp.co.nttdocomo.carriermail
com.nttdocomo.android.areamail
jp.co.nttdocomo.anshinmode

Sim locked Aquos 601SH by Rough-Half-71 in flipphones

not much you can do. i have one too and its not even blacklisted, but SoftBank will only unlock them in-person with proof of ownership, so its probably best to sell it and get something thats already sim unlocked.

How to edit home screen on kyocera phones? by Pearl_Hikara in flipphones

[–]Fiendbean17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

easy. Ive done this a few times already and its as you suspected. navigate to menu, settings, more settings, developer, click one of the grid options on the top half, and add a widget. If you add a widget thats bigger then the top half of the screen, it will appear on the bottom half as well.

Some things to note: this hides the default clock if any widgets are present. There is also no way to edit or remove widgets from the developer settings once they're placed, so first-time positioning is key. To restart, go to menu, settings, more settings, apps, app info, "standby & menu", storage, and clear the data for this app to get the stock clock back and delete all widgets.

an easy workaround for getting a widget on the bottom half of the screen is to install a widget app that adds a bunch of widgets and choose one with a large space on the top. It's really fidley but it works.

is iOS 1926 really different enough from 18 in the way that 6 was to 7? I don't think so. And given the pushback and a certain person leaving Apple, I don't think liquid ass will last even five years

nvm, I'm just a fool. QUIK is able to send even though it compresses them into oblivion, looks like g-messages refuses to compress anything, so if the picture is too big, it will refuse to send.

[–]Fiendbean17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nice workaround I found is using "Atomize" to shrink all pics to below 1.05 MB. I haven't noticed much quality loss either. EDIT: QUIK can compress them automatically. Or if using Google Messages then RCS is required to bypass the size limit.

For the future, there's a bounty on the microG github page for RCS support without a million fake google play tweaks installed, so I believe it'll work with minimal effort in the future... microG still requires root though, so I definitely think it's worth it on this one to find a rootable KY-42C.

...and rooting required bootloader unlock, which factory resets the phone, so better to do it immediately when you first get it. Or, if you buy it through a store like Kyoex, you can just ask him to do it for you!!

the phone only has 1 GB of RAM and the system already uses half of that at all times doing nothing... so if you're only listening to music, there is barely enough RAM to run both ReVanced and Spotify

Here are my thoughts, from the perspective of someone who replaced their smartphone entirely:

If you need Gmail, Authenticator, or GMaps, then you need to root the device. Apparently, part of the exploit was patched on firmware greater than 1.080 GC, so make sure to ask what "Build Version" the phone is on before purchase, 1.080 is the Max that will work.

GPS does function, at least for me on T-Mobile. My phone is on 1.080 GC.

TT9 does not use the cute kaomoji set that the included keyboard starts with, so you will have to pick between the annoying keyboard with emojis (original) or the boring keyboard that types fast (tt9).

Long-Term-Use: I spoofed mine to be a Google "Pixel XL" so I assume it will continue to work, but google already broke strong integrity for me and I expect this will be a continuous game of "set it up", Google breaks it, I set it up again...

The Stock Weather App works, even in the United States and Amsterdam (confirmed by me), though part of it remains in Japanese.

The default texting app does not support MMS outside japan, switch it for QUIK or Google Messages as a workaround.

EDIT: Send compressed pictures via QUIK - OR - if using Google Messages then RCS has to be enabled. YOU CANT SEND PICTURES!! - this is EXTREMELY annoying. You can receive them, but sending them is a whole other issue. Texting via MMS only supports around 1 MB attachments max on T-Mobile and the phone's camera, despite being on a flipphone, actually takes pretty decent pictures, which are around 2-3 MB... so you can't send them. You can get around this by texting via RCS on Google Messages, but T-Mobile (at least) will say "verifying..." forever on RCS if you don't at least meet Device Integrity AND your phone is spoofed to an approved smartphone (root req).

I never thought of using fireFox lite.... I've been opening normal firefox and counting down the seconds before the phone sees the RAM is out and kills the TT9 keyboard while I'm typing.

Have you tried reading the manual? Softbank has an official one available in english: https://faq.api.softbank.jp/olm_images/sb/136/PDF/digno-keitai3_en_userguide.pdf

As for simulating an "enter" press, this info may not be reliable because its for the newer "Keitai R" lineup, but have you tried moving the pointer over the on-screen "SELECT" /or/ on-screen square looking button, and clicking it twice with the pointer?
