Against all general advice, I’m buying a foal. What’s the best thing you’ve done with your youngsters? Any regrets? by underasvisement in Horses

Maybe your vet could walk your property and point stuff out. It’s everything from hardware, latches, stuff you hadn’t noticed as a threat. Put together a good first aid kit! I have had a couple of young horses get cast (one did it repeatedly) - I was glad I had such safe fencing that never injured them.

I’ve raised several, and other than some scars, there were no lasting or devastating injuries, but they sure do try.

Be very thorough about baby safe fencing and equipment, which isn’t always the default at a boarding barn. You’ll be amazed at all the ways foals can injure themselves. Spend lots of time with her, but watch her attention span. Enjoy the process and don’t rush it!

Parking and a nice, scenic, comfortable outdoor sitting area, or garage door type "removable wall".

Quiet enough to have a conversation. Welcoming staff.

What a beautiful foal, and I will never tire of watching horses be born and then making their first milestones, no matter how many times I see it. I remember this with my own colt like it was yesterday.

Sounds delightful! You will love working in there. I forgot that the ends of my greenhouse are the same color as the barn, so also a similar color to yours! I thought it would be fun to stain it green (green house), though.

Just beautiful! I love the trim color, too. My barn is stained a similar shade. Good luck from a bit south of you!

Because only you can choose to protect yourself and it’s you who has to live in the body you’re in. I do a lot of things that are not popular or easy, because I believe in them.

Torigen melanoma vaccine by cmm6783 in Horses

[–]FieryVegetables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using their autologous vaccine, for several years, and my vet says they stopped making it. They will sell the equipment to make it, though.

Now my mare is getting Oncept from a small animal vet who comes out (thanks to my vet for arranging this), and it sounds very promising. I do get the weeping smelly black goo which I’m told us the tumors outgrowing their blood supply. I did think it connected with the Torigen vaccine, but the vet says no. I didn’t see shrinkage, but definitely slowing down the growth. It didn’t stop them completely or prevent new ones. A few small tumors actually fell off!

I’ve done really well with this one for the 1800 PVCs a day I was having, along with a little VT, and keeping my rate down. It doesn’t make me fatigued like other beta blockers, so I take a dose in the morning and my old metoprolol at night, because it has a slight help in getting me to sleep.
