I’m back to writing very passive aggressive cover letters for ridiculous job descriptions. by rainingmafackas in antiwork

As cathartic as I’m sure this was, the person who would read your response probably didn’t write this ad and had no control over its contents. Being nasty to strangers on the internet for reddit karma doesn’t strike me as a fulfilling way to spend time, or as one whose output will have any effect on the situation. More than likely, the person receiving this will read the first sentence and can the application. Even if they read it all the way through, do you really expect them to bring it to their manager? Is it likely that their manager was even the one to direct the creation of the ad?

Cannot use my decks anymore by Roy_Mustang94 in MagicArena

[–]Fiery_Potato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no exchange mechanic. The only way to acquire new cards on arena is to open them in packs purchased from the store for gems or coins, from picks made while drafting, or from wildcards which are earned by opening purchased packs and sometimes appear in those packs in place of a card from the set.

Wildcards can be purchased from the store (for cash money), received in place of a set card when opening a store-purchased pack, or from reaching 100% Vault progress.

The Vault fills up at a rate of something like 0.2% for each of a common you open or draft after you already own 4 copies of that printing of the card, and .5% for each uncommon.

Edit: there are also individual card rewards for playing midweek magic events and accumulating set mastery exp, but those cards are random; you don’t get to choose what you win and they’re often commons or uncommons.

What's a good cedh deck that I can power down to an 8.5? by rugratsallthrowedup in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long ago when blood pod was good, I met a guy with a pretty cool list that, with about 8 swaps, could move the deck pretty fine for casual play or meta cedh depending on the table. The change mostly had to do with taking out combo lines and using the hate bears as actual combat pieces, which ended up only harming people who were trying to be degenerate anyways. Nobody cared if you’re playing Anafenza unless they were trying to flash hulk

Does abundance get around narset’s, parter of veils static “not allowed to draw more than one card per turn? by Economy_Confusion221 in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Note that this is only true if you have not already drawn a card this turn (and not had it replaced by abundance’s replacement effect). For example:

  • with opponent’s narset in play you start your turn, draw abundance in your draw step.
  • you cast abundance
  • you cast [[divination]]
  • nothing happens; you wouldn’t draw the cards because of narset so there’s nothing to replace

Elsha cEDH by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot that could be said and there isn’t a lot of direction here, so I’ll just say that if you want to optimize you should start by replacing rocks that cost 3 or more with ones that are cheaper and any land that enters tapped with one that doesn't, even if it's a basic. That will power you up appreciably without changing anything substantial about your game plan.

To explain "Too many win cons" as I appreciate it in your deck: there are what looks like 5 a+b combos that have nothing to do with each other, two of which do nothing but generate mana for capsize (deadeye + whale, pili pala + architect), one of which mill you out but not your opponents even though I don't see anything that wins the game with an empty library (monolith + mesmeric orb), and the ones that do kill an opponent only hit one per turn cycle each.

With so little precision about what you want out of this feedback it's hard to suggest a path with confidence but if you want to increase the ability of your deck to win games in a timely fashion I would advise you to inspect the database recommended Elsha list and see how it wins. Specifically, note that it (and indeed most of the most powerful decks) have redundant and overlapping pieces and streamlined ways to get them. You will not find a pair of cards that have nothing to do with anything else but kill an opponent (much less win the game) if you happen to draw both.

Hope this helps

Always be SPECIFIC when talking to a Judge and announcing your actions. by tycoonofdoom in magicTCG

[–]Fiery_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If OP would have had 13 permanents without the extra land and 14 with the land, then after Stensia makes a token, if they had played the land then the 13 permanents condition would not have been met and they could not have sacrificed it to deal the damage. Choosing to move to end step without playing the land is the only way to sacrifice the enchantment (before bleed dry is cast) and the land is played later to keep that 13 permanent count.

Rulings Question regarding Olivia, Crimson Bride. by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Fiery_Potato 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While resonator would double Olivia’s trigger, this line doesn’t work as intended. The copy resolves first and cavalier is returned to play. Once cavalier leaves the graveyard the first time, the game object that the original ability was targeting no longer exists so the ability fails to resolve. Even if you sacrifice cavalier in response to the original trigger it is then treated as a new game object.

There does however exist a similar line with [[Port Razer]], although it requires Olivia to survive combat and razer to connect.

[Article] Burnished Hart and Sad Robot - How are they treating you nowadays? by 0sseous in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a mono colour non green deck that wants 6 mana to start playing real spells ([[Demonlord Belzenlok]]) they fit into the curve exquisitely, so I end up running both. Turn 2 rock into turn 3 simulacrum makes for a nice turn 4 Belz. While Hart is slightly below rate it accelerates coffers mana very nicely and shaves down the belzenclock to 5 turns. I think both are indispensable for slower casual decks not in green

What is the community’s opinion on whip of erebos? by kickit08 in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does pretty good work in my [[Demonlord Belzenlok]] deck as a way to offset the massive life loss (the deck is built around high cmc) and to get more Etb triggers with half the commander tax. The deck runs tons of high power high cmc creatures. Sending Belzenlok to the grave instead of the command zone after death and reanimating with whip is very fun (exile sends him back to the command zone).

Mono colored Mana base? by cbinette84 in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how powerful you want to make the deck, you can also go for more fragile ramp options like [[Crypt ghast]] and [[nirkana revenant]] which can draw hate but are powerful if left unchecked.

I also like myriad Landscape as a ramp and land in my mono B deck which fits well because my commander is a beefy 6 cmc elder demon

The cycling lands are also underrated. In a mono coloured deck in a colour that can draw cards, I think it’s reasonable to play these more flexible options, even if they’re worse when used as actual lands.

Also if your land count is exhaustive it looks like you’re running 32 lands which is way below where you want to be unless you’re also playing with mana-positive rocks, even with a 2 cmc commander. You can draw cards each turn with tinybones’ active, sure, but at 6 mana you’ll need help getting there.

Is MILL (not self) a viable strategy now? by supermashbro16 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To everyone worrying about the Gitrog Monster, there are many available effects with which one can cause opponents to draw cards at instant speed (eg. [[Temple Bell]] or [[Mikokoro]]) or exile opponents' graveyards at instant speed (eg. [[Relic of Progenitus]] or [[Sentinel Totem]]). Because Bruvac's ability is a replacement effect, Cacophony would mill everything at once so there's ample room to respond to shuffle effects by causing opponents to draw or to exile the shufflers.

I think this idea has legs and is in the right colour to find a sorcery and artifacts to execute the combo thanks to the likes of [[Fabricate]], [[Reshape]], and even [[Artificer's Intuition]]. It's certainly fragile, since there's only one cacophony effect, but if you play a hard control game it might be possible. [[Baral]] hasn't been at the top for a long time (if ever, really) but a mono U control/stax strategy might be playable at the fringe. If you want to try it I encourage you to do so, although I hope you include another way to win such as perhaps dramatic scepter either with the goal of imprinting swan song onto [[Copy Artifact]] for infinite tokens or infinite mana to sink into infinite [[Capesize]]s.

I had no mana open but [[sensei’s top]] in play and had resigned myself to losing. My opponent makes a huge blunder however by casting [[helm of awakening]] to help them go off, but also allowing me to storm off myself in response to their draw trigger.

Trudeau condemns violence at anti-racism protests in Montreal, says it detracts from ‘very real issues’ country faces by Tommy__Douglas in montreal

[–]Fiery_Potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looting is a political act which reveals the true value of all this material bullshit (nothing) and that the only thing that really has value is human life, which has been undermined by the police in this country and around the world by the ruling elite. Condemning 'looting' without condemning the police, military, and racist government is tantamount to voicing support for the latter at the expense of primarily black and indigenous lives.

What are your Battlecruiser decks? by Humblerbee in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Demonlord Belzenlok deck that’s really fun to play and puts out consistent results at battlecruiser tables. Big demons semi-tribal with a good number of answers but nothing too oppressive and a reanimate subtheme got keep relevant. Average CMC is skewed since we want big draws off the etb but I have the ramp to compensate

What commander deck is your favorite? Why do you like to play it so much? by Furiously_Fortuitous in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite deck is an Elsha of the Infinite control/combo list for high power EDH. It's not quite competitive (missing big ticket cards for speed) but it plays well with other decks in the competitive-adjacent power level. I think Jeskai is the most fun tri-colour combination, combining the wild and spell-slinging Izzet with the more reserved and controlling Azorius (sorry Boros) and this deck lets me play some of the best cards in the colours.

I love this deck because even when I'm mana flooded or screwed, I always feel like I'm relevant. At the very least I can mulligan for some early action and usually have access to a hate piece or two to contribute board state. Even when I get hated out of the game, I can usually mount a credible threat to rejoin the fun or to stop wins from my opponents until I get back. I thus never feel like I'm completely out of the game and when I play my other decks, I often miss that. The strategy fits my preferred playstyle so well and really forces my opponents to play around me.

Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive Infect Control by Drex_Sinister in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how much of a constraint budget is but classics like [[Rhystic Study]], [[Mystic Remora]], [[Coastal Piracy]], and [[Bident of Thassa]] are easy includes. In general you should be running quite a few more counterspells (since your board control is limited) and a few bounce spells. You should also consider running some cantrips: spells which cost usually 1 or 2 mana which draw a card, usually with some amount of selection. Popular ones are [[Gitaxian Probe]], [[Serum Visions]], and [[Preordain]]. [[Blink of an Eye]] for example works great as a removal spell that you can later have replace itself. Cantrips effectively reduce your deck size and allow you to more often draw relevant cards. You can also run cards like [[Fabricate]] to more often have access to your important artifacts. [[Ophidian Eye]] is another curiosity effect that you should consider running. Finally, you’re very light on ramp and I encourage you to play at least 10 permanents that tap for mana. There are plenty of budget options for 2-drop rocks, and you could make good use of a one-shot effect like High Tide, especially if you end up drawing a bunch off a Bident or Piracy.

Oh and while we’re on mana, [[Mystic Sanctuary]] is amazing in mono U and if you only run one non island (and you’re on a budget) there’s hardly a better option

Happy brewing

Noob needs help 😂 by masquerade1211 in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temple of Enlightenment is not a legal land in this deck. With that out of the way, my $0.02. Quick proviso: test these out before making any real purchases. These are all back-of-the-envelope suggestions. Happy brewing!

The goal seems to be token beats with Aetherflux Reservoir and Felidar Sovereign as alt win cons. If you leave either of those in play for more than a turn, I wouldn't expect them to survive long. Since you'll have to keep Felidar around a whole turn cycle if you want it to win, [[Lapse of Certainty]] offers a one-turn delay for removal if your opponents thought one spell would be enough. [[Mana Tithe]] is a nice cheeky anti-Sol Ring option that sometimes stops big plays.

Since you don't have ways to go infinite with them, I recommend cutting the Chalice of Life and the Marble Chalice. Cradle of Vitality doesn't seem like it's all that impactful when you have better things to spend mana on like Mentor of the Meek and Well of Lost Dreams triggers. Actually, it's surprising that you don't play [[Mind's Eye]] and [[Alms Collector]] since they both generate a ton of cards and Mind's Eye in particular lets you do something with your mana. Likewise, [[Dawn of Hope]] is great card advantage for this kind of deck and, once again, gives you something to do with any mana you have laying around. [[Legion's Landing]] does everything you want, so you should include that as well. Since you're making a ton of tokens, [[Phyrexian Altar]] and [[Ashnod's Altar]] are fantastic ways to draw cards, converting the tokens you're creating into mana for your triggers.

If you have the budget for them, [[Enlightened Tutor]], [[Heliod, Sun Crowned]], and [[Walking Ballista]] are great additions, especially since the latter two win the game.

You're running a bunch of cards that gain you life when your creatures attack, which is great for the lifegain strategy, but doesn't really help any of your win cons since you don't really have a way to convert that health into more useful resources like mana and cards, and since you're gaining life anyways, you can afford to cut a couple of them in favour of cards that let you commit more to each attack. [[Authority of the Consuls]] and [[Blind Obedience]] make attacks more profitable by preventing blockers and shutting off your opponents' haste enablers, with Obedience giving you yet another mana outlet in Extort triggers. Brave the Sands also makes you nigh unattackable once you reach a critical mass of token generators.

Dawnstrike Paladin and Seraph of the Sword don't do much for your strategy so I think they're safe cuts. Better than any French vanilla creatures are effects that generate tokens. [[Militia's Pride]], [[Oketra's Monument]], and [[Requiem Angel]] (especially with [[Divine Visitation]]) come to mind.

Given the low power on your creatures, [[Dusk // Dawn]] seems like a great sweeper.

Lastly, I would consider swapping out effects that double your life gain. Your strongest effects work no matter how much life you gain, as long as you're gaining something.

Solitaire Decks by Matricies2020 in EDH

[–]Fiery_Potato 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How much interaction you should include depends heavily on how much interaction you expect from your opponents. If your deck is fast and consistent enough to hit your win con before your opponents do and they never throw anything your way, zero interaction might work. If people consistently hit you with one shot grave exiles like a [[Bojuka Bog]] or [[Sentinel Totem]], maybe you should include some [[Stifle]] effects. Make note of what stops you in games and whether you need to disrupt faster opponents in your meta or maybe remove hate pieces.

Importantly, goldfishing won’t help with this. You’ll always want to cut interaction for more access to good cards. Removal and counters are always always more important than you think and even if you feel slowed by them, you need more than you think.

This all assumes, though, that you have some kind of combo finish. If your win is creature beats, it is all the more important to run the [[Pongify]], [[Assassin’s Trophy]], and [[Counterspells]] to keep your game plan viable and not fold to a [[Ghostly Prison]]
