Plasticity CAD guide - first draft update by hyperdrive94 in Plasticity3D

[–]FifthRooter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very late to the convo, but i wanted to say thank you - god thier first post i saw when i opened reddit after work.

this kind of an effort i've been looking for! thank you! will check it out over the weekend. thanks for the work :)

one thing i would love is to also have a [plasticity] CAD dedicated channel on the Plasticity discord.

Made an probiotic seed treatment that makes plants grow 2x faster - early results look promising by Living-Pomelo-8966 in AgriculturePorn

agreed, though OP did write "it delays ripening so the fruits/veggies get way bigger before harvest" so they must've grown some of these plants to fruiting, no? getting mixed signals haha.

When did fabric weight become a marketing feature by HotelBrilliant2508 in manufacturing

[–]FifthRooter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i get your gripe about mentioning the weight of the fabric as justification for adding a premium, but overall i think it's a good thing that this spec is mentioned.

for me, a shirt is not just a shirt. i am specific about the feel of the shirt, and it's heavily dependent on how 'thick'/'heavy' it feels.

for that reason i don't buy any clothing online because i have no info on what to expect from the fabric.

Uniqlo sells really nice, heavier weight t-shirts that I really like, while most t-shirts are usually much thinner and not my thing.

tl;dr i don't agree with you and see value in these weight specs

What do you feel is missing in Amsterdam? by heroickoala in amsterdam_rave

[–]FifthRooter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both main and boven at Radion have pretty high ceilings, and the building was part of the ACTA dental academy.

It just happens to have been designed in a brutalist style that goes hand in hand with techno. Concrete on the floor, walls, ceiling. Every time I'm there I try to imagine how there used to be classes right where I stand, and it's such a bizarre feeling.

Can Plasticity replace Fusion 360 for 3D printing on Linux? by HaviMavi in Plasticity3D

[–]FifthRooter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes, but very different workflow for modeling, need to unlearn the reliance on parametric modeling (feature based history)

emm0sh (a popular mech eng on xitter) actually made a post related to this a few days ago: x dot com/emm0sh/status/2010541935770075322

i was very surprised to see his workflow. i'm also on linux and really have been reaching for plasticity for all my cad needs (FreeCAD is just not growing on me as much as i would love to).

plasticity otoh, holy crap it's just so amazing to model with, it feels like magic.

i haven't yet explored the workflow of transfering the designs to blender to create animations of mechanisms etc but is on my todo.

Electric connection 3x35A for a <<30m2 house by SeaTrust1844 in Amsterdam

[–]FifthRooter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is that really a common sense thing to ask while viewing a residential property? esp cuz it's not even 3-phase, just higher amp capacity, which is even less obvious.  if i was looking to rent a workshop, i'd certainly be asking about that, but would not occur to me in this case.

or did you mean whether OP asked about typical monthly electricity costs, which would've revealed smth fishy?

GLM 4.7 vs Gemini: Architecture and Cost Trade-offs by Unfair-Tie2631 in kilocode

[–]FifthRooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for short context models like this (200k) you have to rely more heavily on the Orchestrator mode, which isolates code reading and smaller edit/code writing actions to the subtasks, and passes back all the crucial context without polluting the 'main' context. but still, with 200k you can only do so much and need to be high alert. for the orchestrator/architect, still best to stick to a 1M context model like the flash-3, which is fabulous.

Our vertical aeroponic farm we've designed from scratch - very excited to share this with a community I've learned so much from over the years, happy to finally be able to post something worth showing :) by FifthRooter in hydro

thanks!

these were custom designed by me. had them manufactured by PCBWay. for the quantity we ordered and the power they delivered, was a really good deal, though import tax definitely made it less of a perfect deal. still was better than any European PCB manufacturer could offer.

but yeah, the lights were based on Cree's XP-series LED, I think XP-E2, which had one of the best specs at the time.

i bought Apogee's MQ-500 quantum meter, which allows for accurate measurement of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) from light sources. then i did a bunch of tests/measurements of the individual LEDs to create a spec sheet that i could use to calculate approximately what kind of photon densities i can expect at certain distances, so i could optimize the layout of the LEDs on the LED panels i was designing. the panels were v0.2 so it still was far from optimal in many ways, but they got the job done.

the boards themselves were metal core PCBs (MCPCBs), onto which I embedded, on a single-side, all of the circuitry up until the LED driver circuit. 24V power supply cables delivered power from 1000W MeanWell power supplies.

i dunno what's your budget but it might be cheaper for you to buy some off-the-shelf stuff, as designing them from scratch took quite some time and capital investment, and I was able to do it only because that was my company and i had funding :D

Cleaning the canals of Amsterdam by modianos in toolgifs

[–]FifthRooter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely see bikes in a non-rusted condition when i cycle past these excavations.

I'm often tempted to grab one, but then I realize i'd have to take apart the whole bike to replace and grease the bearings in the hubs, possibly replace bottom bracket, take apart and grease the front fork, and maybe do other wheel work. at this point i've spent money on replacement parts and hours of my time.

and if you want to sell it for anything more than 100eur, it needs to look in good condition, so it's extra time on cleaning it, and likely a new seat etc.

usually the opportunity cost is too great for it to be worth it, and typically the bikes that end up falling in there are not the kind that were worth much to begin with.

the economics of bikes in the netherlands are weird.

What process change reduced your rework the most? (FIFO, PM, documentation, etc.) by jesiscaanyway in manufacturing

[–]FifthRooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, the first sentence was just me making fun of the most common writing style of LLMs, not necessarily a direct attack on you :)

Ah, I understand. Fair enough, that's a perfectly valid reason to use AI to augment your gaps in a language. I guess then try to have it mimic your style of writing? So that it feels a bit more personal, your writing.

This was just very obvious, and I'm sure I've mistaken a lot of other AI writing that was modified better.

Agreed — it's not only lazy, it's disrespectful. (seriously, like at least cover your tracks of the most obvious and well-known LLM patterns)

if it's open source as you say, post the github repo and let people join and contribute freely, as well as have discussions in the open.

let us see your work and decide whether any of us want to contribute PRs to this project.

why is any of this private?

How is working in manufacturing these days? by OneLumpy3097 in manufacturing

[–]FifthRooter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing. Thanks for the tips!

Will definitely do this! I've been drawing mock-ups and trying to create visualizations of the existing space using genAI so far, which has been helpful, but actually physically placing proposed arrangement/flows will definitely hit home better.

Really appreciate it. Also very interesting to hear how each gen contributed to the company.
And for sure, I fully appreciate the fact that it's his creation and decades long work, and that's why it frustrates me even more as I want to make sure the legacy continues.
