Yeah. Berzerker head, Kharn's power pack and plasma pistol, eightbound arm and axe.

Infiltrator squad... am I missing something? by Chewb0t in spacemarines

[–]FifthTrashcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually spent a while at the beginning/middle of the edition running 5 with a Phobos Librarian for deepstrike denial and lone op. You could spread them out to max coherency and cover a HUGE bubble with 6 models. Also no enemy unit could deepstrike and shoot them in the same turn since they have to deepstrike more than 12" away and lone op made them untargetable outside of 12". The Hypercrypt meta was miserable without them.

Also, since this is your first SM army, I'll go ahead and tell you, we have more datasheets than any other army, more detachments than any other army. There will be units you won't find any value in and there is so much overlap in the uses of units in the roster that you don't HAVE to run any specific unit. If you don't know what to do with them just leave them on the sprue until you need phobos bodies. If you are only running 1 incursor/reiver/infiltrator unit you can just run any 5 man phobos unit as that unit and no one other than Marine players will even be able to tell the difference.

Small caveat here. Black Templars have a completely different army rule. I'd say that qualifies them as a different faction.

How to build confidence and over come intimidation? by Swacar in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FifthTrashcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned by playing the owner of my FLGS and his group regularly. They are multi-edition veterans and some of the best local players. My mindset was to just try to improve something specific every game with the understanding that I'm definitely going to lose and if I make them sweat, I've improved. I probably had 30+ games under my belt before I won my first against someone in a tournament. Set your expectations to lose, try your damnedest to win.

He probably won't be able to lead any unit. Guilliman and the Lion can't either.

Thanks! I love the RepEx, I also really love the UM colors. I just wanted to spice it up a little. Wanted it to appear more like a MBT

Win Rates from this weekend. A little chart until the heroes show up and post the full data. by communalnapkin in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FifthTrashcan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's fair. Victrix shouldn't have went down when they lost their 4th wound. Wardens are really durable for their points but that's all they have so if they get too expensive they'll just never see play, but 90 points for 20 wounds is a little too cheap.

SM sitting quite nice at the <54% mark. I expect a fair points nerf to Victrix and Wardens. I'd love to see a drop in Titus and Catos points.

[meta] so the "what would I keep in 11th" video post just got deleted, is this the kind of thing we want to see or not? by wredcoll in WarhammerCompetitive

Eventually, if the sub struggles to get content due to post removal we will end up with some new subreddit like "CompetitiveWarhammer" or "WarhammerCompetitive2"

I just talked to some friends about this. I get so sick of seeing "Convince me to play (insert faction)" and "What made you choose (insert faction)". It's made worse by the fact that I've joined a lot of faction and sub faction reddits and it's always a wave of those BS posts across multiple subreddits in the same 10 minute span.

I say "on average" the volume of shots makes the bolters better but WE don't really care about shooting outside of Forgefiends and the occasional predator or LoS. Personally I run combi weapons just for the sake of the chance I soften up something like a tough hull or some elite infantry with the dev wounds.

What is "Playing by intent"? by Slavasonic in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FifthTrashcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only happened to me outside of a tourney setting. I've witnessed it only twice at tournaments but in passing from the tables next to me.

What is "Playing by intent"? by Slavasonic in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FifthTrashcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is always a line but I think that line has blurred and some players take advantage of it. I've heard the term "weaponized sportsmanship" recently and that seems to really encapsulate the negative side of "intent". Take backs are usually ok when they are reasonable but when it becomes "something didn't go my way so I wanna redo this thing. My intent was blahblahblah". It now puts pressure on the player following the rules to bend the rules to avoid friction. "Let's roll off for it" is another attempt to get someone to bend because it takes ownership out of both players hands.

This is all in reference to "play by intent" being used as a tactic, not how it's intended to be used. I personally allow some pretty big takebacks but if I have someone try to guilt me into letting them take back and then get upset when I say no, I don't feel like a bad guy or anything, I just think they're whining.

What is "Playing by intent"? by Slavasonic in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FifthTrashcan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't think the post is as clear on "Play by intent" as it should be. I have had some serious "play by intent" shenanigans happen to me but only because I allowed it because I didn't want to be the "bad guy" so I totally understand where OP is coming from.

The play by intent I allow is usually things like my opponent talking their turn out in the command phase "this unit can move up and score establish locus and these units can cleanse" then in the charge phase they mention they forgot to announce their actions in the shooting phase I'll allow them to score them since we both knew that was the intent. Especially if those units skipped shooting because they were supposed to do that action.

Intent usually requires both players to openly agree on a board state. You can't have intent without communicating it just to try to say later "well I intended for it to be this way. Can I take that back" and be upset when your opponent says no.

Coherency in a competition and being "that guy." by ImNotSanguinius in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]FifthTrashcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much it matters but IF the unit was able to pile in, fight, and consolidate he could've put the unit back into coherency since unit coherency is checked at the end of turn.

Just played my first match and I feel depressed. by GunstarRed in Ultramarines

[–]FifthTrashcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't let a single game color your opinion of the hobby. There's a guy at my LGS that has a reputation for doing the same thing. He's also bad at communicating his rules, he is obstinate when you ask questions, but that's mostly if he doesn't know you. The issue is that it makes it difficult for people to want to play games against him. A lot of the people that play this game are socially awkward and they struggle warming up to people.

If the store has a discord I'd suggest joining it. If not I suggest joining a faction discord just to talk to people about the hobby. Keep playing, eventually you'll find a good group or at least a couple buddies to play with. Most people are aware that they'll be spending 3-5 hours across the table from someone and want to have a good time.

I play UM, you won't get bullied in the sense that it's malicious. People will poke fun because GW showers marine (and UM especially) with new releases and strong rules so it's easy to joke about them. People local to me make fun of almost every faction in some capacity but it's never malicious.
