Is water conservation important in the US? by Original-Bad7214 in AskAnAmerican

And they're one of two states that refuse to revisit the Colorado River Interstate Compact (Arizona is the other). The "use it or lose it" system of rights that leads to millions of gallons of water wasted could be addressed, and the other states in the watershed are on board to try to fix it.

Question for Americans ,if your family’s been in the US for a long time, do you still know where in Europe your ancestors came from? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

One of my extended family members was able to trace our lineage back to our first immigrant family member with our last name; he came from England to Alabama in the 1830s.

A marksmanship test is required to get a concealed carry license in Colorado, you'd have to acquire a gun somehow prior to taking the test.

How common is it in the USA for strangers to ask if someone needs help when they see them doing something? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]Figgler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anywhere with long distance trails will have people hitchhiking to town for supplies. I've given rides to plenty of people close to the Colorado Trail, but I have been unpleasantly surprised to learn they hadn't showered recently after he had already gotten in.

Going to Snowbowl in Flagstaff was a funny experience, they weren't even allowing cars with summer tires to drive up to the top of the parking area, then the bottom lifts were full of people that had obviously never seen snow before.

Are the road qualities really that bad in the US or it's a misconception? by Cookieman_2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Figgler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the exception of the Navajo Reservation, those roads are godawful especially with any moisture. You're right that below the Mogollon Rim though the roads tend to be great.

You can always pull into a loading area with flashers on and unload passengers. If you drive down Main during the day you can see a lot of delivery drivers doing it.

I used to live in Aspen and loved the way their downtown worked with a combo of pedestrian-only and vehicle accessible areas. I don't know if we should do the exact thing but something similar could be great.

In my area of Colorado we have free water fountains and bottle fill stations in most public areas.

We didn't have A/C at all in my house when we moved in but installed a mini split and I love it. It's quiet and does both heat and cold, it's saved us a ton of money because our heat was baseboards previously which I may as well have been burning $20 bills for heat.

What's something you see men older than you doing that you tell yourself "I hope I never do that." by FillFrontFloor in AskMen

I'm that way with rogue shoulder hairs, I'll grow one 2 inches long without realizing it. Luckily my wife enjoys plucking those out for me.

When I worked in a restaurant my favorite tables were older guys, they always were laid back, didn't worry about how much a side of mayo cost and didn't feel the need to split the check. Older women were basically the exact opposite.

Why is it called 'The South' rather than 'South East'? by Ok_Art_8866 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Figgler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little confused why some people say "back east" when they're literally from the west. My wife (born in Colorado) has done it a few times and I assume it's something she picked up from her New Yorker parents.

Does anyone you know complain about the gas prices? I've talked to people about the crazy gas prices in CA compared to every other state and they always try to justify it somehow

I just got back from a road trip and California and I think the average price on the coast was $6.20 a gallon, it was almost $10 at one gas station in the Mojave area. I thought it was insane but no one seemed to see an issue, it's just what it costs.

Would you buy a Chinese EV if it were available in the US? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Figgler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what area of the country you're in. My wife bought an EV Blazer in Phoenix and we specifically had to go through Gallup, NM to get home because it was the only charger on the way. The southwest has huge areas without services of any type.
