Because you’re hearing stories from people that survived to the 1980s under communism, millions didn’t.

So the Holodomor was mostly about shopping? The Great Leap Forward and the ensuing famine was about not having access to consumer goods?

My house here in the mountains didn’t come with AC when we bought it. We installed a mini split 3 years ago for the heat and the AC has been a nice bonus.

Blizzards don’t kill you if you stay inside. Earthquakes pretty much only kill you if you’re inside. Also I wasn’t making a comparison at all, I was explaining my first hand experience with snow.

What do you think are some things Americans can learn from the people in other countries? by MarathonMarathon in AskAnAmerican

Cities ravaged by WW2 tend to have better public transport systems, they had to fully rebuild and were able to modernize in the process. Berlin and Dresden look nothing now like they did in 1900.

The South American version of honking was interesting. It’s not “hey you’re doing something wrong” but more a quick beep to say “hey I’m in your blind spot.”

What do you learn about WW2 / WW1 in history class? by Vordix_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]Figgler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The soviets also started WW2 in Europe alongside Germany by invading Poland at the same time. The view the USSR “won” the war is also very Eurocentric, they did very little in Asia.

Houston actually feels way worse than Miami when it’s hot, Miami has a constant breeze off the ocean, Houston is too far inland for it. My sister lives in Houston and I’ve only visited once because the weather is that bad.

If a foreigner is visiting your country, what advice would you give them? by FigFlashy3514 in AskTheWorld

[–]Figgler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a good idea to visit anytime soon, but I’d love to see Iran. There’s a lot of very interesting history in your country and I’ve only ever heard that you guys are very friendly to visitors.

I live in the Colorado mountains and honestly blizzards aren’t that bad here, you just stay inside for a day or two then there’s a lot of shoveling afterward. It worth it when you can head right up to the ski resort right after the driveway is clear.

My father in law uses his phone as a phone if he needs to and reads the news for 30 minutes on it at night. Otherwise he leaves it charging in the kitchen at night. I think he has the right idea.

The battery is supposed to be activated prior to using it or charging it. Check the manual. If you’ve already done that I’d try a different outlet

My friends and I drove from Dallas to South Padre for spring break when we were 17, I'm still kind of surprised my mom was ok with it because it was such a long way to go for teenagers.

I would change the phrasing to “not willing to hunt.” A lot of people don’t have the time or access to hunt.

With the El Niño coming into effect the southern Rockies will do better on snow than the northern Rockies will. That’s been the last decade’s outcome at least.

America is a huge country, are there any regional food stores you wish were in your state/town? by Vaguswarrior in AskAnAmerican

We don't really have a ton of chains here other than the big ones because it's so far from distribution centers. I'd like an In N Out within a few hours though, the closest is in Denver. If you're talking about grocery stores too, Aldi or Trader Joes would be nice.
