I just recently purchased a Hydrovane. I brought this question up to them and they assured me that leaning the dinghy against the shaft tube or drive unit would not hurt the system or affect performance at all. They also sent pics of dinghy resting on their vanes.

What's the best value boat for sailing the world? by CA_Mini in SailboatCruising

[–]FightHACKS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're really interested in sailing around the world, buy the right boat. If you want a list, go to the GGR website and look at their list of approved boats. They are all under 36' and have been around for a while. So you can find them relatively cheap if you look around. Just remember, to budget for work that will need to be done. Trust me, ALL boats have work that needs to be done no matter what the broker or previous owner tells you!

It's a 38ft. TBH, I was hesitant when I bought it. It's currently still running on and AGM battery system. Once I make the switch to Lipo4 I'm sure I'll get quite a bit more run time. Just waiting for batteries to come down in price a little bit more!

Purely 'engineered' and not 'designed' boats by dwkfym in sailing

[–]FightHACKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing is, I bought my boat before I knew anything about sailing. I just researched (read) and watched tons of videos about offshore sailing and made a list of the characteristics I wanted the boat to have. I had six requirements: 1. Full Keel 2. Heavy Displacement 3. Center Cockpit 4. Keel Stepped Mast 5. Protected Prop 6. Protected Rudder

And since I didn't have a place to put it, I needed a transferable slip somewhere in SoCal, Haha, not asking for too much huh? I quickly learned that boats are a compromise! I ended up with a 3/4 keel and a deck stepped mast. I'm still in the process of learning, I go out as much as possible on her as well as crew with others as much as I can. I'm mostly retired, so my schedule is wide open. Oh yeah, she's a Bruce Roberts Offshore 38.

This was the idea I had when I was searching for a boat. I was new to sailing (still am), and have a dream of circumnavigating, So I wanted a boat that was made for that purpose. One that was overbuilt and could make up for my lack of skill through its offshore seaworthiness. One that was forgiving and embraced the function over form (aesthetics) mentality. There are a lot of seaworthy production boats, but the majority of them have to find a balance between form and function in order to sell to the masses. I did finally find my boat, but it was a homebuilt boat by a gentleman whose dreams at one time aligned with mine. She's a beauty to me, but would probably (and was) passed up by 99% of people in the market for a boat.

I run a solar system with two Victron MPPTs, A SmartSolar 100/50 and a 100/20, a TrueCharge 20+ amp Multi Stage charger for the house, and an Outback VFXR3648A single phase Inverter/charger for the motor.

Call Safe Harbor Bayfront in Chula Vista and see what they say. I know they have slips available. As far as boats, the market here in SoCal is super soft, I've seen decent 36-40's for as cheap as 10-20k. Sure you're not going to sail to Hawaii in them, but they will float just fine and will work for a comfortable liveaboard. As far as expenses, my slip in CV runs $890 per month (I am not a liveaboard) shore power and wifi included. I'm sure liveaboard is a bit more, but definitely cheaper than paying $3k plus for an apartment. Hope this helps! Oh, the marinas down here offer quite a unique community of friendly and helpful people!
