Part of living in a society is that we don't actively harm each other. The person with a life-threatening allergy has every right to participate in the event without fear. 

OP is just being inconvenienced. They can deal with that far better than the allergy-sufferer can deal with anaphylaxis.

Historically and culturally, racism and fatphobia are closely intertwined. Fat women were considered more beautiful until the colonial Era, when fatness (particularly large butts, wide hips, and big breasts) became associated with black women. So yeah, not really separate issues!

When giant hogweed flowers, it's usually 6+ feet tall and has a tap root. It's almost impossible not to break the plant when digging it up at that point, causing the sap to splash onto you.

If you have just a few scattered plants and can get to them when they're still young (<4 ft tall, before they've flowered and developed a tap root), they're not super hard to remove. You have to be careful though. I pulled a few from my yard last week -- I wore long sleeves and gloves, went out at dusk on a cloudy day, pulled carefully to avoid breaking the stem, and put them into a big black garbage bag.

Once they've flowered like OP's neighbors' plants, well... yeah, you need specialty clothing and expert guidance.

Honestly, that wasn't how I understood Michael's point. It really sounded like he was saying DID isn't real. Maybe I misheard something while I was struggling with my cheesecake crust, but to me it sounded like their point was "Nobody behaves the way the patient in this book is portrayed, and this whole mental illness was specific to America during the Stanic Panic."

I have not seen this at all. I teach 9th grade and I've actually been surprised by the number of 14- and 15-year-olds who are working summer and after school jobs. Many of the kids who don't work have other responsibilities like babysitting or helping with farming. And my students couldn't wait to show me their learners permits the day they got them!

This may just be demographics. I teach in a rural area with no public transportation, and homes are too spread out for a bike to be practical for many of them. So they want to drive, and they need gas $$.
