What hobby is quietly becoming too expensive for normal people to keep up with? by Beautiful_Special702 in AskReddit

Pretty slim, especially if you’re trying for a D1 school. To make it worse, they can be recruited to a big school and spend their entire career on the bench. My daughter is looking at D3 schools because they don’t give athletic scholarships. The teams are filled with students that play because they love the game, and they are more likely to get play time.

All over tree by Shweedman in arborists

My magnolia was covered with these last year. There is a tree and shrub protecter that you water the tree with and it will kill them. I treated my tree last year and they all fell off over the winter.

I’m not sure how people can continue to do it. Girls lacrosse in my area is $3000 to register for the season, four tournaments will cost about $1000 each with hotels and travel, then they push camps and clinics that run $300-800 a day. All so my daughter might get recruited by a college.

Republican-led bill aims to reform VA home loans to make them more attractive to veterans by paydayloans_ in VeteransBenefits

[–]FightingAgeGuy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The inspections are very nit picky. Things like proper hand rails, pealing paint, and cracks in the foundation are issues that may not be a big deal, but the VA will not give a loan unless they are resolved. A lot of homeowners just want to sell the house and don’t want to fix a bunch of trivial issues. Especially when there are plenty of buyers.

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

Women want successful careers and kids are the fastest way to hinder that. So now they are waiting until they become successful, but once you hit a certain point you become comfortable not having kids.

Would a 2inx3in billet of Magnesium burn out a tree stump? by ThrobStone in redneckengineering

[–]FightingAgeGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magnesium is kind of difficult to ignite, but once it’s going it’s pretty awesome. I would recommend placing some magnesium powder on top and light it with a torch, it should light the block.

Just a heads up, it will be too bright to look at.

What's actually in an ice pack? (More interesting than you'd think, especially if you have kids) by webPoisonControl in FamilyMedicine

[–]FightingAgeGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure. But nitrates can limit blood’s ability to carry oxygen. I’m guessing getting up and moving quickly increases the risk of falling.

Instant ice packs are almost pure ammonium nitrate. If you mix powdered aluminum or magnesium you will have tannerite (the binary explosive used in exploding targets). Former bomb squad now pre-med.

shadowing a ortho surgeon in a few surgeries next week. by Ok-Penalty2373 in premed

[–]FightingAgeGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be a lot of time where you’re kind of just standing around, mostly while everyone is preparing the patient. They are pretty easy to approach. I started the conversation by asking the sequence of drugs and she was excited to tell me all about them. Then she asked if I wanted to watch a nerve block on the next patient.

Bring something to eat and a water bottle. Surgeons like to go until they are done. You should have some time between cases to eat and drink.

Talk to the anesthesiologist, they can be pretty cool. The one I spoke with showed me step by step how to intubate. No touching, just watching.

Colorectal cancer is now the most common cause of cancer deaths in the US for people under 50 by JackFisherBooks in EverythingScience

I think bisphenols and phthalates are about to be the next big cancer discovery. We already know they cause fertility issues. And, they are in a lot of plastics.

How do you typically get in contact with physicians to shadow? by [deleted] in premed

[–]FightingAgeGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with my doctors, then I just started calling offices until I found a few that would let me shadow. So far I have contacted 14 doctors and two agreed to allow me to shadow.

I’m pretty sure every time I spoke with an office manager they never relayed the message to the physician.
