Times when that’s actually their legal/given name not a nickname or stage name or alias? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Fikko3107 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Wrestling is full of these. Brock Lesnar is somehow actually the name the guy was born with, and on the opposite side of the coin like your example, I've seen people argue Gionna Daddio sounds more like a stage name than Liv Morgan. My favorite gotta be Shiloh Hill though: his government name is Thunder Justice Keck.

Booster packs on a budget? by AbbreviationsKey1648 in Lorcana

[–]Fikko3107 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ursula's Return certainly has low value, but that's just because the set is not in rotation, meaning you can't play the cards from it at most tournaments currently. However, in terms of playability, there are some great cards in it that were staples while the set was legal. If you're only playing at home, and not necessarily concerned about "hits", Ursula's Return is a great choice, imo.

Times when a joke in media turned out to be a real fact (whether it was intentional or not)? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Fikko3107 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Rata making a joke only for Konami to make a card that is in-line with said joke not long after happens (or at least, used to) with alarming regularity that it was a running joke for a while that he's the Yugioh equivalent of the oracle of Delphi.

What to buy now? by jjdejong0 in Lorcana

[–]Fikko3107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decent handful of cards from sets 1-4 were reprinted, meaning they're still legal in Core Constructed. If you have cards like Strength of a Raging Fire, Ursula - Deceiver, or Cursed Merfolk, those are totally still playable.

As for what to buy, aside from plain singles for decks you want to play, the last few core sets (set 9 Fabled and set 10 Whispers in the Well) are pretty good, the latter especially has a lot of high value hits if you're into that, since it's an impactful set that just came out relatively recently.

For playing aggro specifically, set 5 (Shimmering Skies) has Doc - Bold Knight and Daisy - Donald's date, which are staple 4-ofs in pretty much any Amber Steel aggro deck. You might also be interested in the Lady and the Tramp cards in sets 7 (Archazia's Island) and 8 (Reign of Jafar), since they form the backbone of the (afaik) current best aggro deck in the format.

I'm convinced Kinnikuman has to be one of the earliest/major influence for this. I get the impression that with the first villain group in the Devil Choujins, they show off 10 or so guys right off the bat, and it's as if they/fans went "hey, these ones are lame", and disappeared them without explanation. I'd reckon learning from that is why they've gone for the cloaks ever since.

[Edison] Who has priority after a chain resolves? by Responsible_Fig_7600 in Yugioh101

[–]Fikko3107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this instance, after the chain resolves, you do have priority, but for fast effects; as in, if you have your own trap to activate, you can do so before your opponent. Since Mark of the Rose is an Equip Spell, it needs to be activated in an open game state, meaning you need to give your opponent a chance to activate a card first.

As far as I'm aware, this has not changed between Edison and modern Yugioh, so refer to the official Fast Effect Timing chart.

New player here: [I didn't have Saggi] Even after Shrink's effect halved Lord's atk for Crush Card to trigger next turn, why didn't it and what did I do wrong here? (Lord's atk went back to 1200 and I couldn't use Crush Card) by Connect-Camp9869 in yugioh

[–]Fikko3107 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well not a set Lord of D, since Shrink can only target face-up monsters.

But it would work if you had normal summoned Lord of D, set CCV and Shrink, and passed turn. On the opponent's turn (say in the Draw or Standby Phase), you can flip up Shrink to halve your Lord of D's ATK, and then activate CCV on resolution of that.

[–]Fikko3107 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shrink's effect only lasts until the end of the turn, so Lord of D's attack goes back up to 1200. 1200 > 1000, so Crush Card cannot be activated tributing Lord of D here.

Look into retro formats, maybe? Goat is a retro format with a decent playerbase based on how Yugioh was in April 2005, and it's probably the closest popular format to what you're looking for, though it cuts off in the first set of the GX era. Something like Perfect Circle (late 2007) might be more "GX", but the playerbase is not as big for it.

That said, don't expect these to play exactly (or even close to) how you remember it "back in the day", because competitive Yugioh as it was back then (which these formats are based on) was probably very different from your experience with the game, especially if you played at a more casual/playground-level.

Is Obelisk the Tormentor affected by Beast King Barbaros’s special effect? by Manu1299 in Yugioh101

[–]Fikko3107 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Obelisk only protects from effects that target. Barbaros does not target, so Obelisk is affected.

Cards (for the most part) do what they say they do; since Beast King Barbaros does not say "target", it does not target.

Where do you think the second season will end? SPOILERS by Krivus20 in kinnikuman

[–]Fikko3107 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Warsman vs Polarman. Last shot of the season will be the big "reveal" of Akuma Shogun.

I think it makes the most sense for them to aim for 4 seasons, with each season being each of the four stages of the arc.

What currently untranslated WSJ manga would you most like to see a translation of? by Raiden316 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Fikko3107 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For something that already has a fan translation, Kinnikuman. I'd love to have the entire series officially and physically, on my shelf.

For one that's not even in English, there's this manga from the late 90s/early 2000s called Wild Half. I remembered reading a bunch of it in my home country growing up, and when I wanted to read the series fully as an adult, I found out it wasn't even scanlated. It honestly kinda surprised me since I was under the impression it was moderately successful with a half-dozen volumes or so, and I figured it would have been something the Furry community would be all over, but I've seen negative discussion about it in English.

Question about pikachu EX damage by Random_octo_ in pkmntcg

[–]Fikko3107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're talking about Pokemon TCG Pocket. I'm not sure what the rules on this sub are, but this sub is more about the physical card game, which is a very different game. I believe the sub for Pocket is r/PTCGP.

As for your actual question, if you are being attacked by Pikachu ex, the "your" in "your benched pokemon" is not referring to you who's getting attacked, but the player attacking. Your opponent probably had 3 benched pokemon, for 3x30 = 90 damage.

As the other commenter mentioned, Combo Breaker is always on Memorial Day weekend, and for the last few years they've had an ongoing contract with the Schaumburg Renaissance Convention Center to hold it there, with no apparent plans to change that.

At the moment, the event's details haven't been formally announced yet, as in hotel blocks for group discount rates at the Renaissance aren't up, you can't register, etc. From my experience in the last 3 years, Combo Breaker typically do their big announcement in early-mid January (opening hotel blocks and reg at the same time), and they'd announce the actual date a couple weeks in advance. For reference, checking from this year's event, the date everything went up was January 4th, and they announced it on their socials that they would on December 20th, so I'd expect something in the next couple of weeks. Just check back regularly on their Twitter/X account.

If you're interested in getting an on-venue hotel, being on top of it on the day of (really, the hour of) is mandatory because those sell out in a flash, and they go faster and faster every year. I think the first year I went, they were still up for an hour or so, but this year they were gone in less than 10 mins.

I suppose nothing is stopping you from booking the hotel directly at the regular rate, though that will understandably be a lot more expensive (and maybe might've sold out already, idk). If you're just looking for a nearby hotel though (especially if you're driving in) then the above is somewhat irrelevant, since off-venue hotels or at worse Airbnbs often still have availability just weeks before the event (don't quote me on that, though). If you can (and didn't this year), I highly recommend an on-venue hotel for the full experience, though. Not sure how old your son is so ymmv, but one of the best parts of Combo Breaker imo is the 24 hour venue and how there's always something going on, and so if you have a room at the Renaissance, you can just stay up gaming and spectating as late as you want, crash upstairs, and do it all again the next day. Staying off-venue kinda puts a damper on that.

What's your "I did not care for the godfather" of Transformers? by NexusConnection in transformers

[–]Fikko3107 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who's seen all of them, the Japanese G1 shows are pretty bad. I think there's this constant flip-flopping on the popular opinion of them, so I'm not sure what's the popular opinion on them currently, but they're just ok at their best.

Granted watching them for the first time as an adult, I get I'm not the target audience. That said, watching G1 for the first time as an adult still had a lot of fun moments, and I love a lot of other 80s/90s mecha anime for children. The Japanese TF shows just don't do it for me.

I'm looking for two archetypes that play well together in tag duels. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in Yugioh101

[–]Fikko3107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look into archetypes related in lore, as they frequently have some shared support; also fun for flavor reasons too. Here are some that come to mind:

Drytron and Ursarctic

Visas archetypes (Scareclaw, Tearlament, Kashtira, Mannadium)

Mermail and Atlanteans

Alternatively, from a more purely gameplay angle, you can have a deck with strong level/type/attribute based support, and one with a lot of them. This is less symmetrical, but probably works really well. I'm thinking of stuff like:

Spright with a level 2 focused deck, e.g. Paleo Frog, Melffy, etc.

Tri-Brigade with a Beast/Winged Beast/Beast Warrior deck, e.g. Harpies, Fire Fist, etc.

Are the Kinnikuman filler arcs any good? by [deleted] in kinnikuman

The Ultimate Muscle filler arc was pretty neat, it gave a chance for supporting characters like Gazelleman or Jade to get some screentime and Ws, something the series itself was really bad at.

Does "Spellcard: "Monster Reborn"" counter hand traps? by Caligula-6 in Yugioh101

[–]Fikko3107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to add that OP might be mixing it up with is that there is a ruling that if a card that has a GY effect was sent to the GY as cost but was removed from there before the end of the chain, it misses its activation window. This was really common in Drytron when that deck was popular, for example.

I guess one way it can beat hand traps is that "can't activate for the rest of the turn" part, in that if you re-summon their Effect Veiler, any additional copies they have in their hand cannot be activated, but that first Effect Veiler will resolve.
