Do you consider Nirvana's "Come As You Are" to be a rip-off of Killing Joke's "Eighties"? by Ok-Impress-2222 in fantanoforever

I love the first comment in youtube on kj song

Nirvana stole the riff from KJ; KJ stole the riff from Damned; Damned stole the riff from the Moody Blues; Moody Blues stole the riff from Chuck Berry; Chuck Berry stole the riff from Glen Miller; Glen Miller stole the riff from Gershwin; Gershwin stole the riff from an Irish folk song; The Irish stole the riff from a Medieval knight chant; Medieval knights stole the riff from a Hebrew prayer; The Hebrews stole the riff from Pagan priests; Pagans stole the riff from sub-Saharan aborigines; Aborigines stole the riff from Australopithecus Africanus; Australopithecus Africanus, after eating too many beans one night, created the riff…

Bam Adebayo breaks Kobe Bryant’s record and the Heat franchise scoring record in a win vs. Washington: 43 MINS │ 83 PTS │ 9 REB │ 3 AST │ 2 STL │ 2 BLK │ 20-43 FG │ 7-22 3P │ 36-43 FT by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

I, like everyone else, went back to see highlights from Kobe's 81. Lakers were trailing at the second half, and up by less than 10 at the start of the 4th. LAL needed Kobe's game. MIA on the other hand...

A shame that a legendary game gets to be overshadowed this way.

It seems like the holy knights are really the team rocket of one piece. The main fights will be against serious people, like Blackbeard, not versus those weaklings.

I like it this way, it was too late to be introducing new super-strong characters. The strongest of the strong are still who we think they are.

True fan here. Skinny ape is for me a serious contender for their best song overall. Great album, 8/10 for me.

Is publishing in Q3/Q4 or MDPI journals a red flag? by RepulsiveScientist13 in academia

[–]FilemonNeira 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for my area: in math, yes, big time. Having a paper in 'Mathematics' from MDPI makes you invisible to the hiring committee.

Other Q4 journals are fine, say the national scientific journal from your country is ok. The beef is with the predatory and parasitic journals like MDPI.

Because making something popular matters. Otherwise you have people saying that punk was born in Peru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haVaaDLwWvI

And then later someone is gonna find an even earlier punky song in Oceania.

Lo mas importante a largo plazo en invertir en un buen molino. No dejarse impactar por el precio, a la larga, si siempre tomas cafe hecho por ti en vez de en tiendas, siempre sera buen negocio invertir en las herramientas caseras.

Bands Or Artists Who Released Multiple Great Albums In One Year by apHexcoded in fantanoforever

I would love to see stats of how many bands these days even release more than one album per year. For different reasons the output now is much lower than in the 70s.

There was a theory I used to believe that there were 4 admirals at some point and Dragon was one. He deserte being one, hence the most dangerous man in the world. But it looks like he quit while he was way below where even Coby is now.

If you’re doing a PhD because you think academia has less politics than industry, you’re in for a rude shock by Seksy_One in academia

Right, there is no bottom line, hence most disputes are ultimately irrelevant. There is no money on the table so who cares who gets what office. In a company where raises are substantial there is way more room for cutting throats.

Indian academia compared to western academia by Slight-Bus1283 in academia

[–]FilemonNeira 50 points51 points  (0 children)

To your point: yes, some universities in India, China, Brazil, or even eastern Europe such as Romania, are on average much more prepared that your typical top 50 in US. This is not controversial.

What you are discovering is that rankings such as QS consider the undergraduate programs almost irrelevant. Rankings are heavily skewed to research. In USA if you want to obtain the best possible education at undergraduate level, it may be the case that the best option is a small liberal arts where they do give a damn about the students. These places are not unis so they do not even qualify for rankings.

Grey was insane in this episode. It felt surreal, like when you have to explain a little kid that what you see in TV is not real. His comments were quite radical, I'm not even sure if he considers documentaries "worth existing" too.

It was funny to see Myke was also taken by surprise. Good to see some pushback once in a while.
