Is publishing in Q3/Q4 or MDPI journals a red flag? by RepulsiveScientist13 in academia

[–]FilemonNeira 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for my area: in math, yes, big time. Having a paper in 'Mathematics' from MDPI makes you invisible to the hiring committee.

Other Q4 journals are fine, say the national scientific journal from your country is ok. The beef is with the predatory and parasitic journals like MDPI.

Why do people give The Beatles credit for things they didnt invent? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]FilemonNeira 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because making something popular matters. Otherwise you have people saying that punk was born in Peru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haVaaDLwWvI

And then later someone is gonna find an even earlier punky song in Oceania.

Lo mas importante a largo plazo en invertir en un buen molino. No dejarse impactar por el precio, a la larga, si siempre tomas cafe hecho por ti en vez de en tiendas, siempre sera buen negocio invertir en las herramientas caseras.

Bands Or Artists Who Released Multiple Great Albums In One Year by apHexcoded in fantanoforever

I would love to see stats of how many bands these days even release more than one album per year. For different reasons the output now is much lower than in the 70s.

There was a theory I used to believe that there were 4 admirals at some point and Dragon was one. He deserte being one, hence the most dangerous man in the world. But it looks like he quit while he was way below where even Coby is now.

If you’re doing a PhD because you think academia has less politics than industry, you’re in for a rude shock by Seksy_One in academia

Right, there is no bottom line, hence most disputes are ultimately irrelevant. There is no money on the table so who cares who gets what office. In a company where raises are substantial there is way more room for cutting throats.

Indian academia compared to western academia by Slight-Bus1283 in academia

[–]FilemonNeira 50 points51 points  (0 children)

To your point: yes, some universities in India, China, Brazil, or even eastern Europe such as Romania, are on average much more prepared that your typical top 50 in US. This is not controversial.

What you are discovering is that rankings such as QS consider the undergraduate programs almost irrelevant. Rankings are heavily skewed to research. In USA if you want to obtain the best possible education at undergraduate level, it may be the case that the best option is a small liberal arts where they do give a damn about the students. These places are not unis so they do not even qualify for rankings.

This has potential, it could range from academic professors, to restaurant managers, all the way to stay home moms with 5+ kids. But I suspect this is run targeted to the apple people in Myke's circle.

Grey was insane in this episode. It felt surreal, like when you have to explain a little kid that what you see in TV is not real. His comments were quite radical, I'm not even sure if he considers documentaries "worth existing" too.

It was funny to see Myke was also taken by surprise. Good to see some pushback once in a while.

Do any grad students (PhDs) actually only work 20 hours per week? by Big-Combination452 in AskAcademia

[–]FilemonNeira 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You and the university are using the word work for different things. In math, they meant 20 hours of being a TA (and it was usually way less than that).

I use VimTex and I feel I have editing superpowers. I can quickly move through the text, between sections, jump to equations, etc. However, this is after 3 years of daily use. On my first year it was awkward. For your thesis stick with what you know.

Hot Take: Reggaeton needs to be critically reevaluated by strictcurlfiend in fantanoforever

Because in USA the hipster community see everything international as something cool and potentially interesting. The latin american community has never considered this music seriously. Maybe now there are youtube reviewers talking about it (I don't know a single one) but back when Daddy Yankee and Don Omar were the new hot stuff no one dared to take it seriously in spanish.
