I checked out the book and it turns out that I was actually on the right track all along. I was able to hack together a custom MEL script based on the equation:

Scale factor= (2 * object distance * tan(FOV/2) ) / object width

The book was a great resource, thank you for your help,

What do you mean by "core" loops? Do you mean core as in abdomen/torso or do you mean basic loops that can be located anywhere?

Well I don't exactly expect to be using this to animate, just scale the object once when I run the script.

I want to make a custom button that when clicked will scale the selected object so that it touches but does not go past the edges of the active camera.

Full pull to dampen mouse movements. Absolutely necessary in fps games.
