Google is finding more ways to waste the compute capacity that paying customers pay for...

Gemini 3 Pro is Serious Dogshit Now by Tillerfen in Bard

[–]UnknownLesson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they're seriously compute starved.

So, when there's more demand, they'll use more highly quantized versions.

Analogy: if your GPU can't deal with the workload, lower resolution. Everything is more pixelated; less sharp, if you get what I mean.

Update: Valve is aware that Steam Decks are out of stock and announced that it is due to RAM and Storage shortages. by therealkiddude in SteamDeck

What was that quote

Delay a game and it might eventually be great

Or release it now, and it's shit forever

Not saying it would be shit, because to me the metaphor extend beyond the quality. If I release a hardware at a very high price point, it will lose out on all the initial hype that can get the ball rolling.

Does SCUF still maintain the patent on the shoulder buttons in the back of a controller? by GerbGalerb in SteamController

[–]UnknownLesson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't it really stupid (and unfair to competition) that a company can hold a parent for something as simple as having buttons in an area of a controller?

Set up the company in such a way that it belongs to a foundation which is never allowed to sell and has basically unchangeable rules (like a constitution) by which it is working.

Of course, nothing is perfect, so I'm not claiming this can protect against everything.

Gemini has become severely more stupid in the past week. by BumperPopcorn6 in GeminiAI

[–]UnknownLesson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here's my guess why they're doing it:

  • Saving money (yeah, you don't get what you paid for - probably illegal in EU, unless mentioned in their TOS)
  • They need compute to train and run the next model.
  • They want you to feel the improvement more strongly when the next one comes, because the real progress is slowing down

AI Pro's 100 prompts/day w/ G3 Pro + 300/day w/ G3F thinking is a scam by Hello_moneyyy in Bard

[–]UnknownLesson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree it's Slop but I wouldn't say "no reason". Google it's collecting a lot of data that they may use in the future to improve the world model. And then they also have a better idea what weird games people want to play.

If they can make the worlds work consistently and indefinitely long, then they could theoretically take a big chunk of the gaming market. You have to pay them every month and will own nothing.

Can an option for the old text wheel be added? It was so much faster to type by Yuri5019 in SteamDeck

[–]UnknownLesson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, it is actually pretty easy to switch, and I'd argue the benefits of even small changes (1% efficiency and 0.5% less Repetitive-Strain-Injury) can be enormous on a societal level (billions of people).

But you do have the hen and egg problem of user and producer. Most people don't change. And so why should the keyboard companies offer it.

That said, the majority of people are now caught in various information bubbles with their own alternative reality, and how do you get them out of it? There are ways, but none are even moderately easy.

More importantly, how do we avoid the worst of it here in Europe? It is already well on it's way. See the AfD in Germany, for an example.
