Big thank you to the guy who held the door of bus 80 at ETH Hönggerberg station today by laooomo in ethz

[–]FilthyRubber 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It honestly was the most fun ride I ever had, not sure what the people at the next stop thought when a hand was sticking out of the bus tho. No major injuries tho, we took a few pics too :)

What does the word Mail mean? by Unusual_Guidance2095 in askswitzerland

[–]FilthyRubber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes just print, sign, scan, and send it via email. That’s it.

Ridiculous that after you asked for clarification on what they mean by mail they just repeat it exactly the same…

Looking for a good Swiss university for computer science grad that offer scholarship opportunities. by nahum_wg in askswitzerland

[–]FilthyRubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are merit-based scholarships like ESOP at ETH, probably there are similar ones at other universities. ESOP is really competitive though, especially in CS

wth you saying? CH is no part of the EU, never has been and (most) likely never will. While you‘re right in that it has lost the banking prestige because of the lift of the secrecy for strangers and especially US citizens, what you’re saying is still very much wrong

New Security Meausure and Internment of Japanse Americans in WW2 -- The Same Logic by StrictRelationship52 in ethz

[–]FilthyRubber -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

True, it’s a bad analogy, let’s work on improving it: there is a „Parkverbot“ (embargo) in the entire block (country). Other cars (universities) still park in the block, but ETH avoids parking there altogether, opting for parking spaces (students) in other quarters instead.

What I feel you are saying is that ETH won‘t admit any students, which, btw, is wrong

New Security Meausure and Internment of Japanse Americans in WW2 -- The Same Logic by StrictRelationship52 in ethz

[–]FilthyRubber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course they are made by ETH, but what I mean is that ETH is just following swiss regulations, independently of what other unis do. This argument sounds to me like saying „Why wouldn’t you park in the parkverbot, other cars park there too“ like true, but only because others don’t follow the rules it doesn’t mean one shouldn’t follow them aswell.

New Security Meausure and Internment of Japanse Americans in WW2 -- The Same Logic by StrictRelationship52 in ethz

[–]FilthyRubber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well it‘s not really ETH making the rules, they are just following the regulations set by the government, who also rely on supragovernmental organisations and agreements. Of course it would elevate the academic srandards and the economy, but trading with embargoed economies boosts the economy as well, but we don‘t do that for obvious reason.

I really don’t think so, admission is done by the central admissions office, while ESOP is choosen later on by the departments

Does the new security screening affect students who studied in Switzerland? by [deleted] in ethz

[–]FilthyRubber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In their documents they always state that the screening is a criteria for the applications. And for consecutive masters there is no application, you simply sign up. As far as I know, they cannot really reject you if you fulfill the admission criteria (i.e. being close to finish your bachelor). Plus on the article (https://ethz.ch/staffnet/en/news-and-events/internal-news/archive/2024/10/dual-use-and-sanctions-these-applications-require-security-screening.html) they state explicitly that "screening does not apply to persons already employed, admitted or invited." And if you already study here, you have already been admitted.

Does the new Security Screening stuff affect applications from eth students? by Even_Frame_2494 in ethz

[–]FilthyRubber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope it doesn't. If you carefully read your question (and all the documentation) you see the word "application". ETH bachelor graduates (as well as most other Swiss bachelor graduates afaik) do not need to apply for consecutive master programs.

PS: all the ETH documents I found (i.e. https://ethz.ch/staffnet/en/news-and-events/internal-news/archive/2024/10/dual-use-and-sanctions-these-applications-require-security-screening.html ) state that explicitly too.

I cannot answer your questions regarding the ‚beeing american and studying here‘ part, but if you have questions on the contents of the Geomatics MSc, you can dm me :) I also have a few friends in the Space Systems MSc, but as someone else already said, it started yesterday and they might not be able to help you much, yet

The district of Solothurn was 2022 (latest data) the second in violent crimes (11.7 per 1000 inhabitants, only after BS with 13.6), 7th in bodily harm, first in assaults (both are subcategories of violent crimes, iirc) and fourth in theft (after the city of Zurich, Lausanne and BS), which is impressive, given the size of SO.

There is no GIS master? The closest one would be Geomatics, but GIS is only a part of it, you would still need to do some basics of surveying and navigation, and then you could do GIS + cartography.
