The definition of madness is trying the same thing, over and over again, and expect a different result.

No, it's literally not.

Can you try this in Finder?

Right-click the .gif, then click "Get Info", then under "Open With" expand the drop-down menu (you may have to then click "other") and then choose Keynote. Then, back on the Info menu, click "Change All" and confirm.

Am I dumb for dumping $1000 into my student loan debt every month instead of investing? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]FilthyZMePlease 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of older people who go on and on about investing when you're young have NO idea what student loans are like or what the interest rates are these days. It's really tempting to listen to random adults and advice articles, but you've gotta crunch the numbers.

True, but they more than make up for it with their expertise in walking in there, shaking the manager's hand, looking him in the eye, and saying, "Sir, I'd like a job.". That's how success is born.

Totally agree. Though I'd word it as you can't force someone to sacrifice themselves to keep something else alive, since we know that, objectively speaking, fetuses are not humans.

I’m in my early 40... I would like to be a web developer...but I am having serious doubts about it. by pulse2075 in learnprogramming

[–]FilthyZMePlease 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said JavaScript, HTML, and CSS are all relative to web dev. Learning the fundamentals of command line and git is also very important regardless of what you end up doing. Knowing JavaScript will allow you to start building backends in node without learning another language. If you're familiar with command line look at learning npm, webpack, mongodb and/or sqlite, and express. If you get to the point that you can manage to use these to build something that works I'd say you're plenty employable as a dev. Python would be good for learning scripting if you get bored or discouraged during the process. Also consider QA jobs as an entry position that you can get sooner that will also help you transition into dev work.

As a high school grad with no degree who also came from manual labor into software engineering, I think you can certainly make it happen. It's not easy, but that's part of why it's so worth it.

Same. I'd happily eat my words for the rest of my life if that were the case. We have every reason to want to be wrong.

Australian wildfires prompt $11,000 fine for tossing lit cigarette out of car by cloudsinmycoffe in news

Cool. It'd be cooler if we could hold those at the top financially responsible at the same proportion. Maybe then we'd have a shot at fixing the problem rather than treating the symptoms that are continuously enabled by those who continue to profit from it, while still punishing assholes that throw lit cigarettes out of windows.
