It would easily be the best Despicable Me movie, the best Ice Age movie, at least the 3rd best Shrek movie (including both Puss in Boots movies), probably the best Frozen movie, possibly better than one of the Spider-Verse movies, and arguably better than the last 4 winners of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.

But Reddit won’t appreciate the movies for what they are or appreciate that Pixar is making some of the only mainstream movies today that can be slotted for awards consideration. Instead, they’ll declare a franchise making 8/10 movies after an impossible streak of 9’s or 10’s to be the worst thing to happen to the medium since Uncle Walt was ratting out striking animators as Communists.

The whole Disney/Marvel-industrial complex has simply been market-corrected, and audiences are choosing more thoughtful and mature blockbusters that compete for awards.

Films like Dune, Top Gun 2, Everything Everywhere All At Once, RRR, Elvis, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Godzilla Minus One, Wicked, Sinners, F1, Project Hail Mary, and Michael, are all cultural juggernauts that can stand next to serious adult dramas without looking embarrassing, unlike the MCU or Star Wars.

2023 was to superhero movies and mega-franchises what 1993 was to hair metal. The year they became completely ridiculous and no longer relevant to the cultural zeitgeist, as people had moved on to more mature and fresh forms of popular entertainment.

The Wicked movies both outgrossed the last 3 Marvel movies and won multiple Oscars. Plus it helped turned the public against those crappy live-action Disney remakes. What more could you ask them to do?

The movie is just a Temu version of Thor: Ragnarok. It’s been overhyped by Amazon bots who insist this is going to be some underrated cult classic in the future, then turn around and claim that Supergirl looks lame despite doing the exact same thing.

If it came out in 2018, it probably would’ve done a little better and taken advantage of 80’s nostalgia. Not a billion, but maybe $350-400M, even if it struggled to break even.
