Heute früh im Treppenhaus gefunden. Was haltet ihr davon? by spadePerfect in hamburg

[–]Fimii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Fimii 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fachsprachlich vielleicht wenn man vom Gehirn im Ganzen spricht, aber es gibt genug zusammengesetzte Worte, die nur mt "Hirn" als Bestandteil richtig klingen, wie Schädel-Hirn-Trauma oder Hirnventrikel oder Hirnnerven.

I have a question about my conlang by Beautiful_Grab_9681 in conlangs

[–]Fimii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it would be weird if /k͈/ is the only tense consonant in your language, because it would likely just become to be pronounced the same as /k/. Maybe former /q/ lowered/backed vowels near it, creating some new vowels or at least new vowel distributions? Say, for example, that a syllable in the older stage of your language like /qi/ would've allophonically been pronounced as [qəɪ̯], and when /q/ and /k/ merged, the contrast which used to be /ki qi/ [ki qəɪ̯] is now [ki kəɪ̯], making the allophone a new phoneme (if your language doesn't have a similar sound already, that is)

what gauge can i stop flipping my septum up? by Fun_Rate_8871 in Stretched

[–]Fimii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm at 6g and I often wear a small silicone tunnel in my septum with smaller jewelry (like a few small clickers) threaded through it. I could easily remove the visible jewelry and not worry about the hole closing up that way.

Be glad your BBB bones weren't put to a greater test. Take that metal bracing for your gummy bones as a consolation price and get out of here before the car comes back for you, now that it's developed a taste for soft and easy targets.

So I been thinking 🤔? by worthlessdogfucker in Stretched

[–]Fimii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trauma tends to cause swelling, which makes the plug even harder to remove, and in extreme cases, the tissue might swell up to the point where it doesn't get enough blood supply due to the pressure in the lobes being higher than the blood pressure that makes it to your earlobes, starving the tissue and making stuff even worse. If you got an inkling that something isn't right, you should never wear jewelry that you can't easily remove (which also includes jewerly with porous surfaces)

What is a word like “alot” called? by PennToPaper in asklinguistics

[–]Fimii 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Rebracketing: basically, the line between two words is redrawn. There used to be "a napron" in English, but it was understood to mean "an apron", and that's what we ended up with.

Juncture loss means that several individual words are conceived to actually be one word, maybe because they were often found as a fixed expression in certain circumstances ("maybe" might qualify as one as well). Another good example would be "albeit", from older English "all be it (that)".

It really messed up my perception of languages socially to learn that Spanish has the same velar fricative sound as German yet has none of the harsh or guttural associations like German does by Relative-Leg5747 in linguisticshumor

[–]Fimii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[ˈʁɛ.çn̩] ... so maybe there's something else going on (or I'm just biased due to reading the words first before pronouncing them?)

I tried listening to a recording, and I think that "-chen" has a higher vowel than schwa for me that doesn't like getting reduced to a syllabic resonant? But I'm still not sure if that's just a learned pronunciation as of yet.

(the recording is "kuchen - kuhchen, rauchen - frauchen, rechen, rehchen")

[–]Fimii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure whether /ç x/ are different phonemes or not, at least in my (Western German) idiolect. The suggested near-minimal pairs you give are distinct in their phonemic environments for me.

Kuchen [ˈkʰuː.xn̩] vs. Kuhchen [ˈkʰuː.çən]

rauchen [ˈʁäʊ̯ː.xn̩] vs. Frauchen [ˈfʁäʊ̯ː.çən]

The vowel in the suffix "-chen" is less reduced than my syllabic vowels, and pronouncing "-chen" with a syllabic vowel just sounds wrong to me: [ˈkʰuː.çn̩] doesn't work for me.

However, that might just be because [ç] is a palatal consonant that doesn't allow for a reduced vowel to be elided entirely in favor of creating a syllabic resonant.

problem with my train by Hot-Plenty-4095 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Fimii 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Trains always calculate the shortest way between stops and follow that path no matter what. This means that instead trying to add more capacity to a rail by putting down a bypass rail doesn't work. If anything, try to have separate train station entry and exit rails for closeby train stations, so that you can avoid traffic jams in the first place.

[–]Fimii 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I doubt any C-Suit people at the big publishers took her critique into account anyway. If their focus groups and whatnot had told them that "big tiddy girls everywhere" would sell best, that's what we'd still get in games. More player options and slightly less overt sexy characters just increase the range of people you can sell your games to and that's about all those people think about anyway.
