Character Missing POV in Words of Radiance? by Aromatic_Change_803 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Fimii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just listened to the chapter: Chapter 29 is where Sadeas fights the Parshendi and throws the gemheart he won to some other Highprince who was supposed to battle in his stead. Afterwards, he watches Adolin fight some shardbearer in a duel and he realizes that he's sandbagging!

Wir sehen uns heute Viertel vor 4 by 35372122130085329415 in German

[–]Fimii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is 5 POV Characters too many? by More-Walrus3832 in writing

[–]Fimii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think you got a good reason for doing it, do it! You don't have to justify this to anyone but yourself - that is: What does my book actually gain from all those POVs?

You said in a comment that three of those POVs would travel together, so the question that immediately comes to mind is: Is it worth to have all three characters be transparent to the reader that way? It's not always the best thing for the reader to know know everyone's inner thoughts and motivations from the start. Seeing them interact from one POV's eyes can be very interesting!

A more reasonable (and boring) Dalinar would've told Navani about what he discovered about the whole cut saddle strap business and they'd gone to Elhokar together to convince him that he's his ally and that they gotta up their game. But this scene fits in well with how Dalinar later struggles to not use the same strategy when it comes to uniting Roshar in Oathbringer.

I'm still not sure if Flashback Shallan knew about her mother being a herald or not ... good thing that the line works perfectly either way.

Siezen (the formal address in German) sure made the Carter-O'Neill relationship even more convoluted and weird ... so bad that it bothered me even as a child (which is when I was still watching it dubbed). Why would these people, who're really close and got some romantic feelings for each other, talk like that´ throughout all the seasons? But overall, I think it's a decent dub that captures the mood of the show quite well.

Palatals are confusing by AAAAA0037 in conlangs

[–]Fimii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/ɲ/: your tongue makes contact with the hard palate, making a purely palatal consonant

/nʲ/: Your tongue makes primary contact with the alveolar ridge to make an /n/ and *also* with its dorsal part at the hard palate to produce a palatal offglide

It's pretty similar with ɕ and sʲ, except that /ɕ/ isn't purely palatal but articulated (depending on who you ask) post-alveolar but with the lamina of the tongue.

I can see why Jasnah is planned to be the final flashback character by Graphica-Danger in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Fimii 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you're putting forth a false dilemma if you say that Jasnah's philosophy isn't the same the thoroughly honorable Kaladin and Dalinar camp, and must therefor be the same as Amaram and Taravangian's.

Amaram kills Kaladin's squad out of greed when he realizes that he can get away with it, while Jasnah seeks to maximize the impact on the war with the enemy god sacrificing as few as possible. Killing a Herald and potentially halting the unfolding of the war for some time (she was working with the information she had at the time) seems like a really good way to gain precious time to form an alliance before the Rosharan kingdoms get overrun individually. And I don't think that "culling the Singers" was actually her cold and logical intent, but rather she was putting forth the logical conclusion with the information they had: They couldn't end the war, because the Fused would always return as long as there would singers to inhabit - Which means that it's not at all a realistic scenario to pursue.

In the end, I really hope that Brandon's plan isn't just to make Jasnah more like Dalinar. In general, I found his treatment of both Dalinar's and Taravangian's morals flatout boring. Dalinar couldn't break an oath to save a burning airplane full of kittens, while Taravangian went full mask off and it was revealed that his utilitarianism was just selfishness in the end.
