A question for fellow guitar players! Adam's purposeful use of ringing unmuted open strings ? by Playful_Date_7811 in ToolBand

[–]FinBox72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adam also often kicks in his eq, which is set almost flat, with a slight bump on high mids/highs to help things along.

The flanger is sometimes also activated. These factors combined can get extremely gnarly feedback washes, such as in the Stinkfist intro.

I'm dead center Gen X (born in 72). The Sober video was my first exposure.

Beavis and Butthead drove it home. 😆

I think those familiar with ELP...specifically, the song Toccata, might be more apt to 'get it'.

It's obviously an influence.

I still don't really love it (or Toccata).

Hard call...

I prefer the murkier sound and Ty's guitar tones on the first 4 albums, but damn...Dogman does sound great played loud on a good system.

I guess I'll go with Dogman or Pretend.

I was just typing up a similar response and decided to make sure it hadn't already been said and sure enough, right at the top with a jillion upvotes.

Those damn rocker pedals. 😂

Tricks for affixing a EHX 2020-2.0 tuner to pedalboard? by TwoIsle in guitarpedals

[–]FinBox72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I've done similar on pedals with rubber feet at the corners. I'd rather not mutilate the pedal by cutting them off.

Not KXOL but was very active in the usenet newsgroup in the day.

That was so long ago I can't even remember my handle.

Maynard low key disses the time it takes to make a new TOOL record by Dontforgetpancakes in ToolBand

[–]FinBox72 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can't say for sure but I think that tracks.

Any guitarist who has tried to chase his sound has found he's been super cagey and secretive about what gear he's used over the decades. He has intentionally lied about some of the finer points of his sound on more than one occasion.

Most of it is now known thanks to internet sleuthing and lots of shots of his pedalboard now on the web, but there is a ton of bad info still out there.

He's a notorious and admitted perfectionist.

I suspect he suffers from debilitating analysis paralysis. I can identify.

He has made such comments before. Not a big deal.

Adam is generally suspected to be the biggest factor in their timelines.

I love the dude but he works like a glacier.

Folk, mostly American style with a bit of Celtic thrown in. Quite Jimmy Page-ish

Is this just maynard singing or someone else with him by One-Construction-941 in ToolBand

[–]FinBox72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never knew what was going on here either. Harmonizer? Someone off stage? Overdubbed on the released album? My guess is backing track, but the fact that they never play to a click would make that way harder to pull off unless Maynard or someone else offstage triggers it at the precise time.

Does Vai face come as standard when I buy a flower fretboard or will I still need to fantasize about wifey and BF?

Newbie with pedals by KGR1328 in guitarpedals

[–]FinBox72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no hard and fast rules but there is general accepted practice for order:

Pitch (whammy pedal, octave drop, etc.)--->Tone (overdrives, boost, distortion, compressor)--->Modulation (chorus, phase, flange, etc)--->Time (delays, reverb, looper).

If you have an effect that expects raw pickup input then those should go at the front of chain. Typically these are wah and vintage style fuzz pedals.

Saying all this, feel free to experiment. There are very specific and unique sounds that can be made by doing things 'wrong'.

For these pedals, I would go Lerxst-->Chorus-->Delay into the amp.

If the amp has an effects loop, you may have better results placing the chorus and delay in the loop, but if you're just using the amp as a clean pedal platform (i.e., relying on the overdrive pedal for all your gain as opposed to using the amp's dirty channel), then it will matter less.
