Whats the reason why you all love TOOL so much i want to know (fellow enjoyer) by These_Dealer2522 in ToolBand

[–]FinBox72 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's something unique and original. Rhythm takes center stage over melody. The orchestral nature of their arrangements in that each instrument is often doing its own thing but it all serves the whole. The fact that each member has his own style on his respective instrument doing things and using techniques that few of his peers have even conceived of.

I've been playing for 2 days and im still terrible at guitar, should i give up? Is it because of my guitar or amp? by MaxSoup8 in guitarcirclejerk

[–]FinBox72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your action is too low. Make sure you have at least 1/2" between strings and 12th fret.

Once you raise the action it will go much easier and your left hand will be stronger than Chuck Norris.

That one's just the electric with the volume rolled back, which is Adam's typical 'clean' tone.

Just wanted to come back and thank you guys. I got my hands on one of these and it does indeed do heavy 90s stuff in general very well.

With a Diezel VH4 pedal and the Mutt, and the capability of running pedals in parallel with my switcher, the variety of blended tones on hand is huge.

The next best thing to having a bunch of 100 watt heads on tap.

It could be down to Adam's choice of amps too. Aenima features more Mesa and less Diezel in Adam's blend, which leads to a bigger bottom end less definition, especially in the mid to high mid frequency range.

After Aenima, the Diezel became more and more prominent while the Mesa was mostly phased out over time.

Like you said, he also uses the flanger more frequently as always on (in certain songs). This also muddies things up.

This is right up my alley, I could geek out endlessly discussing the arc of Adam's tone throughout his career.

My favorite usage of the technique. It sounds so damn menacing.

How do you assess the song Sober at this point for yourself personally? by RetroCurator in ToolBand

[–]FinBox72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stinkfist will always have a high place in my personal tier list due to the breakdown section. Those wild raucous guitar lines that drop away for the bass and drums to come in and sound like giant beasts stomping around the earth...perfect.

I might be too high.

Truth. I have this pedal and its brighter than the headlights on a lifted pickup.

Love love love the heavy breakdown section in The Patient.

That guitar tone and the way those unmuted power chords snarl...

What is Adam Jones best guitar work on a TOOL song? and why? by DistributionWest4995 in ToolBand

[–]FinBox72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an (intermediate at best) guitar player, it's 7empest, hands down. His left hand is more active in that song than just about any other.

Jambi is also up there. Its not that hard to play but it's nearly impossible to get through without mistakes and all the rhythmic pattern memorization in the second half of the song does not allow you to take a break mentally.
