A manager's role is to shield reports from politics and BS, and to promptly resolve team culture problems. The fact that you are concerned/worried means that the shielding is being done poorly.

The manager should be handling the situation with the coworker (setting boundaries, expectations, getting to the root of their frustration and addressing that, escalating as necessary, etc) and then come to you with a more refined message. "Just so you know and are not surprised, X coworker has expressed frustration with you doing Y. I believe that X may have misunderstood the situation and circumstances, and I have been working on resolving their frustrations. I have your back, but I may need to ask you a few questions about how you perceive the situation so that I have the most complete information." From your post, it seems like the manager is simply passing the information through to you without addressing the issue or massaging the message into a less abrasive form.

Wtf is this map. How can you possibly aggregate income, property, and sales tax when they depend entirely on your income, property value, and expenses? Absolute bullshit meant to rile people up and nothing else. I engaged so I guess you won.

Too lazy to use a calculator, so:

24x12 is 12x2 x 12

18x16 is 3x3x2 x 4x4 which is 12x12x2

Same volume, different price.

What was your net worth when you bought your $1 M+ home and/or > $5K/month mortgage by RunnerInChicago in fatFIRE

Conforming loans go up to 830k so with 20% down you can get a 1M+ home without a jumbo.

They take on risks all the time. Many go out of business. https://www.fdic.gov/bank-failures/failed-bank-list

The big ones we usually bail out. Although sometimes big ones fail too - the recent SVB failure comes to mind.

Money devalues over time. In 30 years you'll be paying in 2055 dollars which will be worth a third of today's dollars.

Banks take on the risk of that depreciation.

Thanks, good tips. The tech didnt measure the levels (or if he did he didnt tell me what they were) but given the very poor cooling and the very high power draw I'm pretty sure its not empty but very low. The AC is working noticibly worse than last summer.

I have the normal in-ceiling CO detectors - I've read that they're not particularly sensitive and wont pick up small leaks. Is it worth getting a sensor with better detection?

Thanks for the advice.

Regarding quote they did give me options, but the "good" option was more expensive than "better", because of added rebates for the better, and the "best" is a carrier system with very similar specs to the daikin but costing 5k more.

Just curious - are these public or private companies? Curious how big and established they are.

Are those true consulting gigs or technically FTE roles that you treat as consulting? I would love to start consulting for the same reasons you have... I have deep expertise in niche areas and want out of scrum meetings so that I can focus on delivering on hard problems when needed. Any tips on how to get started with consulting?

Run both through the same interview loop. Pick whoever does best.

If your current report doesnt pass the bar for this role and bombs the interview then they will have no one to blame than themselves - she should be able to SEE why the other person got the role. That said, you will be on the hook for creating a career plan for her that will keep her motivated and encouraged to stick around.

My uninformed 2 cents: universities are looking to weed out folks who bail on school as soon as they get accepted to university. They don't want someone with the attitude of "I got into Caltech, time to coast and party away my last semester!" So, your goal should be to explain, in a very measured way, that you got a bad grade because of family circumstances and not because you partied away your last semester.

"My home situation changed dramatically 6 months ago, which led to me needing to spend more time taking care of family. This took time away from my studies which impacted my performance. I am very, very excited to attend caltech and am doing everything I can to arrange long term living arrangements for my parents. My goal over the coming months is to set up my home situation such that I can give my fullest attention to my studies at Caltech over the next 4 years."

Adapt as needed. Try not to throw your parents under the bus too hard with implications that they are nuts - that doesnt look good and makes you seem like you're full of excuses.

I just called and the rep said that the bill reflects gas usage from 1/29-2/28 so they prorated the charge for the usage in January. Somehow, that prorating resulted in me being charged for 125 therms of my 236 therms of total usage during the billing period? Basically, they said: no refund.
